Accepting the Mark

Max has just moved and she doesn't know anyone, but a group of kids in her grade seem to know her and follow her around the school. She hears howling at night, and Max swears that it's right outside her window. When school starts to get harder and Max gets more stressed, she gets more angry. She's never been a violent teen though. But when the group of kids that follow her around tell her something interesting, will she choose to accept it? Or go on living in the dark?

9. The first turning

I hit my alarm clock as it beeped. It seemed louder than usual. I moaned as I stood up but feel back down onto my bed. Today was the day. Or well, the night. I felt dizzy and sick. I wasn't sure if this was psychological or if I really was sick. The fall leaves fell off the trees outside and I watched them for a moment before standing up to take a hot shower.

I walked into the kitchen where Mr Frost was sitting at the table with a coffee and the newspaper. Mrs Frost was at the stove cooking something. There was a plate of pancakes on the table and I walked over and just grabbed one and headed for the door.

"Hey, where you going so early Maxine?" Mrs Frost asked. I hated when she called me 'Maxine'. I went by Max, but Mrs Frost said the Max was a "boys name".

"I'm meeting some people before school," I said.

"Why so early?" Mr Frost asked as he looked up from his paper and took a sip of his coffee.

"We are working on a project, and we need to use some equipment thats at school," I said. I couldn't possibly tell them that I was going to meet some friends so we can talk about turning into wolves tonight. That might get me sent away. Again.

"Well have fun then," Mrs Frost said. I nodded and ran out the door. As soon as I walked out I sensed that Zac was behind me. I turned around and saw the black haired boy emerge from the side of my house.

"Maxine eh?" he asked laughing. I punched his arm.

"I hate it when people call me that," I snarled.

"Gesh, your turning into more of a wolf everyday," he said as he smiled at me.

*Later that night*

I placed my plate in the sink and looked around the kitchen. Mr and Mrs Frost sat there still eating, almost like robots. It was kinda scary.

"I'm going to go to bed," I said. Mrs Frost looked up from her plate.

"But it's only 6:00, is everything alright?" she asked.

"I'm feeling a bit sick," I lied. I just had to get to the den before 7:00.

"Oh well then going to bed would be best," she said. "Goodnight then," she said. I nodded and walked down the hall to my bedroom. Zac and Shawn were sitting on my bed. I jumped when I saw them.

"Did we scare you?" Shawn asked as Zac started laughing.

"Well I wasn't expecting two boys in my room," I said.

"And guess what else?" Zac asked as he stopped laughing.

"What?" I asked.

"Were in your bed too," he said as he and Shawn burst out laughing. I rolled my eyes.

"Lets just get going, I'm actually starting to feel wierd," I said interupting the boys laughing. Zac stood up and crawled out the window and me and Shawn followed.

"You ok to run?" Zac asked as I shut my door but left it open a bit so I could get back in. I nodded and took off running. I could smell the other lads. They were on their way to the den too. By the time we got to the den the other lads were just arriving. "Good timing mates, now lets get down below so Max doesn't turn out here," Zac said as he opened the gate and locked it.

We walked into the den and Shawn locked the doors while Simon, Nick, and Percy locked the windows. Zac walked over to the rug that sat in the middle and lifted it up to reveal a metal trapdoor. He turned the handle and opened it up, letting out a shriek and making me cover my ears.

"During the full moon we stay down here," Zac said.

"Why?" I asked. "You guys turn into wolves all the time, whats different?" I asked.

"The moon is the source of our power," Shawn said as he walked over to the trap door. "During the full moon, we have more power because the moon is at its full," he explained.

"We do it as a precaution, during the full moon its harder to control the wolf inside. We are more wild, more like real wolves," Zac said. I nodded.

Shawn, Nick, Simon, and Percy all jumped down into the pit. I walked over to it and looked down. I could hear them down there, and could even see them even though it was pitch black.

"Ready?" Zac asked.

I nodded and jumped into the pit. Zac jumped in after me and reached up to shut the door. As he shut the door it got even more dark but someone turned on a light. The light was dim but made it easier to see. The light dug into the dirt wall and steel bars were placed around it.

"Only a few more minutes," Simon said.

"Just remember not to fight it," Zac said. "Your going to feel like a serge of energy, don't fight it."

"Will it hurt?" I asked.

"After this it wont hurt, but the first turning is always the hardest cause your not use to turning into a wolf. But it doesn't hurt too bad," Zac said. He pulled out his phone and checked the time. "It should be happening any moment now," he said as he put his phone up.

Just then it was like a church bell went off in my head. There was a loud ringing and pounding. I dropped to my knees and clutched my head. I rolled on the floor in pain and then it stopped. I looked up and saw the others had turned into wolves. I looked down and saw my paws. My paws. They were a auburn color like my hair. I looked around and saw the boys fighting in the corner and Zac standing next to me. He walked closer and licked my muzzle.

Congratulations, now your a wolf Zac said in my head. I watched as Zac sat down on his haunches. Zac let out a growl and the lads stopped fighting and came and sat down. Then Zac lifted his head up and let out a howl. I did the same and so did the lads. And soon the room was filled with the sound of six wolves.
