Accepting the Mark

Max has just moved and she doesn't know anyone, but a group of kids in her grade seem to know her and follow her around the school. She hears howling at night, and Max swears that it's right outside her window. When school starts to get harder and Max gets more stressed, she gets more angry. She's never been a violent teen though. But when the group of kids that follow her around tell her something interesting, will she choose to accept it? Or go on living in the dark?

1. Leaving

Max picked up her bag and set it in the boot of the car and got in the back seat. She waved goodbye to the kids who had gathered to see her off. Most of the kids at the orphanage had become her friends. She had grown up with all of them. She was the oldest of the kids at Black Gate Orphanage, and she was certain that Ms Rockwell was glad to see her off.

Ms Rockwell was the orphanage's "mom". That's what all the kids called her when someone from the state was visiting. She wanted the orphanage to seem like a happy place, but only when they had special visitors. The rest of the time it was like a prison. To a lot of the younger kids, they didn't really mind. They had grown up there. They didn't mind having to whisper at all times, and do chores.

But Max was different. She got passed around from the orphanage to foster homes, she knew what it was like to have fun. Go out on the weekends with friends. But her foster parents would move or take in another kid and not want her, then she would be sent back to the orphanage.

This time was going to be different though. This time Max had been adopted. The couple seemed nice enough. She had only met them once, and seen them multiple times at the orphanage. Their names were Mr and Ms Frost. Mr frost was a tall skinny man, he wore thick black rimmed glasses. Ms Frost was shorter than Mr Frost. She had short dyed blonde hair.

The car pulled away from the orphanage, and Max turned around in her seat to wave goodbye. The driver coughed, and Max turned back around.

"You excited?" the driver asked as he positioned the mirror so he could see in the back seat. "Ive had you in this car many times, and you've been excited every time to leave. This time is permanent," he said. Max only nodded and smiled out the window.
