2. Chapter Two

The alarm clock rang, it was time to go to work. Sam got up, brushed his teeth and got dressed as fast as he could. He went to the kitchen but didn't find the cake anywhere, he opened the fridge and there it was, Sam sighed with relief and brought the cake out of the fridge. It was covered and half eaten. He laughed at the thought that his mother ate half of the cake. He ate a slice and took what was left of it with him for his friends. He took a look at his mother’s room, and she was sleeping peacefully. He grabbed a sticky note and wrote, "Off to work." Stuck it on the door, put on his shabby shoes and went to the restaurant, walking on feet as usual.

When Sam was there, he got excited  to know what happened with his friends, and to tell them what had happened with him, and to let them taste his cake and see if it really was effective. He ran to the kitchen and there were no dirty dishes yet. He started looking for his friends but he only found Thomas.

“So, did things work out alright?” Sam asked excitedly.

“Umm, yeah it was great!” Said Thomas. “I made some coffee, cappuccino, latte and hot chocolate. They all were great, except for the cappuccino. It wasn't very bad, but not as good as the others, you know.” He said very fast. “What about you? What did you make?” He asked.

“I baked a cake. Did you give the drinks to anyone?” Sam asked.

“Yeah. I tried one of them and then gave them all to dad.” Thomas said, his tone not really steady. Sam felt some sadness in his eyes.

“You didn't give any to your siblings?” Sam asked, he felt how dumb the question was right after the words came out of his mouth.

“N-no.” Thomas said and then smiled weakly. “He just loved them, and couldn't stop drinking.” He continued.

Then Sam felt some ache in his heart that he rarely feels it. Regret. He knew he shouldn't have said this, he knew something had happened with Thomas. Something bad. He didn't ask. Instead, he offered Thomas a piece of cake, hoping it would change his mood.

“Do you want to try the cake I baked?”  Sam said as he uncovered the cake.

“Sure.” Thomas started eating the cake, at first he didn’t seem to like it that much, but then he started smiling widely.

“Sam, this is so good! I mean, it’s not that it tastes perfectly, it tastes good, but I don’t know something about it makes me like it so much. It brightened my mood, thank you, Sam!”  Sam smiled and was about to thank Thomas when Fleur entered the kitchen.

 “Hello, guys.” She said.

“Hey.” Said Sam and Thomas in union.

“Vat happened yesteghday?” She said in her French accent that Sam got used to, it didn't need much effort, she just replace every “W” with a “V” and almost every “R” with a “Gh”. In fact, he couldn’t imagine Fleur without her funny accent. It gave her some kind of identity. “Vas it alright?” She continued.

“It was all great. I made some hot drinks and Sam a cake. Look, he also got it with him so we can taste it.” Thomas said.

“Really?” Said Fleur enthusiastically. “Let’s wait for Alanzo and then eat it all together then.”

“No, I’ve already ate a piece, you should too, something about it is so strange – in a good way.” Thomas was excited.

“Yummy! C'est tellement délicieux” Said Fleur as she ate her piece. The boys looked at her in wonder. “Oh, soghy. It’s so delicious!” She said, and she started giggling.

After that, it was Fleurs's turn to talk about her dish. Fleur and Thomas were both thrilled by now, and they were excited to see Alanzo’s reaction. they waited and waited until finally Alanzo was there.

“Finally!” Fleur said. “Vere have you been?”

“Umm, I – umm.” Alanzo hesitated. “I just  woke up late.”

“Oh.” She said.

“Umm, so .. What happened with the cooking?” Sam asked.

“Yeah it was great!” Alanzo said with a smile. “I gave some to my mother and father, I tasted a bit of it but they loved it so much that they ate the whole lot of it.” Alanzo said. Liar. Thought Sam, even that he knew almost nothing about Alanzo but he was the closest one to him of the three and he could feel when he was lying. He just acted normally and said,

“Oh that’s great. I baked a cake, come on I want you to taste it.” But Alanzo knew he wasn't a good liar, he knew that he couldn't lie to Sam, but even though he continued his acting and Sam gave each of them a slice of cake. Fleur nodded at him. Same looked at him, with hope filling  his heart and eyes. If Alanzo gave the same reaction of the other two, then that would be a sign of success.

Alanzo ate it very fast then. And he was suddenly happy. Which made Sam confused.

“Why are you all so happy?” he asked. “I mean…”

“I know, right?! It just feels awesome, and I don’t even know why!” Said Alanzo.

“It’s like we’ve eaten a cake of happiness.” Said Thomas laughing, soon they all joined him.

“I know right! That’s exactly how it feels like.” Fleur said, laughing.

“Guys, do you think cakes usually make people get happy?” Sam asked.

“I don’t know, I've never tried one before, and I've never seen a costumer that got this happy after eating a cake of ours when I tried waiting.” Said Alanzo.

Can I make happiness? No, that’s impossible, right?  Sam thought.

Then suddenly the four kids stopped talking, they heard a cry.
