1. Chapter One

In the city of Paris and in one of the best restaurants in the world worked a poor guy called Sam Moody. Sam was only twelve and his job was to wash the restaurant’s dishes, but he was so creative, imaginative and hopeful. Sam believed in himself and his abilities, he believed that if he was older he could make a great fortune and feed his mom who was always depressed and sad because of life. The chef that Sam worked with was the most successive and popular chef in Paris, his name was Risdam, but him being the best chef in Paris never let Sam lose hope.

“One day I will be more famous than him.” He used to say to his friends who worked with him, the older ones used to laugh at him, they knew that just a poor little boy who knew nothing about cooking and never really showed interest like them in learning could never be a better chef than the best now chef Risdam. His best friends Alanzo, Fleur and Thomas however, always encouraged him and did their best to give him some self-confidence.

Sam really loved his friends, they all were poor and had to leave their own towns to earn some money. Alanzo came from Spain, he was such a quick-learner and he was older than Sam. Fleur was French, she was very beautiful but she couldn't cook anything and she was even younger than Sam. And Thomas came from Germany and had the least experience in cooking. Even that they came from different places, they all knew how to speak English, not from learning in schools, but from listening. Many Americans and English speakers visited that restaurant. Even that they were his friends, Sam just knew a few things about them, he always felt that there was a kind of sadness in their hearts that their faces showed sometimes, bigger than the sadness of poverty. However, he never had the chance and the courage to ask them.

“You know what, Sam?” Said Alanzo one day. “maybe if we kept on watching chef Risdam we can learn from him, and you can be better than him.”

“I don’t really need him, Alanzo. Sorry if I’m being arrogant but I seriously don’t. I've got it in my blood. Trust me.” Sam replied then watched the chef dreamily. His friend nodded, but never really understood him completely.

“You know what? Maybe we can watch him so we can make a good team, and Sam will be our leader,” Alanzo said turning to Fleur an Thomas. “Since he’s got it in his blood.” He added rolling his eyes. Fleur and Thomas agreed, but Sam was a bit bothered by the way Alanzo said the last sentence.

After about a month of learning, they all decided that just watching the chef wasn't enough, they had to try cooking, not in the restaurant of course, but at their homes. The restaurant’s manager gave them their salary and they decided to buy some simple ingredients to test their abilities, as well as some food to their families of course, in case they weren’t very good at cooking.

And so they did. Fleur bought some and butter, she shared oil and yeast with Alanzo, two boxes of milk with Thomas and Sam, a box of flour with Alanzo and Sam, some salt with Sam and sugar with the other three. Thomas bought two bars of chocolate which he shared with Sam, coffee beans and cocoa beans. Sam also brought some baking powder, butter, vanilla, and two eggs. None of them could afford any more, this was almost the only food they had for this month, so they had to make it work. And they all went home and gave themselves a try.

When Sam went home, he found his mother watching T.V. He sat beside her and started a conversation.

“Hey, mum. I’m home.” He kissed her cheek she gave him a faint smile. “I – I brought some stuff with Alanzoo and Thomas and Fleur and I want to try cooking, or actually baking for a start. What do you think about it?” He continued.

“Yeah, that’s great.” Said his mother, emotionlessly.

Sam sighed and went to the kitchen, he got the ingredients out of his bag and started spreading them on the table, neatly. He started remembering the way chef Risdam makes the cake. After he did, he started making the mixture of the cake. I hope this makes mum and whoever eats it happy, I really hope so. He thought while putting the chocolate bar in the mixture. He was actually having fun, cooking, he loved cooking very much. After he thought so, he started feeling his heart’s beats fastening and he worked brilliantly. Now the cake only needed baking, even that a person can’t call the oven Sam had an oven, it still worked. Sam left the oven for a while, and sat with his mother.

After a while he got a strange feeling, he felt that the he had to get the cake out of the oven, even that the oven’s bell hadn't rang. When he checked the clock, he discovered that it was indeed the time. So he went to the kitchen and enjoyed the great scent of cake, started opening the oven and RING, its bell rang. Sam was confident as he got the cake out of the oven, it smelled so good! It was burnt slightly, he hoped it won’t affect its taste. He cut the cake and put a slice for his mother and went to her.

“Mmm.” His mother said as she sniffed the cake's scent, she was actually smiling. Sam looked at her confused, seeing his mother smiling was such an unusual thing. “What’s this lovely scent?” she asked, turning to Sam.

“The cake’s ready. I got you a slice so you can try it and I can put you more if you liked it.” Sam said, hopefully, still surprised by his mother’s reaction however. He gave her the cake slice and she started eating it, enjoying every bite of it, until she finished it. Sam couldn't believe his eyes, the happiness that was on his mother’s face was unbelievable, at least for her. She had a grin that he never saw on her before, or actually a grin that he did see, but couldn't remember because he only saw it as a baby when his father was alive and they had some good amount of money. It was like – like magic!

“This is awesome, honey!” His mother said and she started laughing. “How – how did you make this?” she said still smiling.

“I – I don’t know. I memorized the recipe then just followed my intuition and put the ingredients together and– mum how do you feel?” He said.

“How do I feel?” His mother said. “I feel so happy, so joyous and so proud of my son!” she said in a low voice. "Come here.” She added tapping her lap. And so did Sam, uncertain. He sat on her lap and she hugged him tightly.

“I love you, mum.” Sam said in almost a whisper.

“I love you too, darling.” Said his mother.

While Sam was on his mother’s lap he started thinking. what made my mother that happy? Was it just this cake, or was it something more? Am I a good cook, or what?

Minutes later, Sam was asleep in his mother’s lap. She took him to bed and sang him a lullaby.
