When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

8. 8.

Evan's point of view.

I walk back down the stairs, not looking forward to it. Even though they are in my home (kinda) and I'm kind of the leader of this whole thing, I can't help but feel like a third wheel. They're all friendly and maybe a little too friendly for my liking.

Because however horrible I may be to Holly, I have to admit, I kind of like her and not just in a friendly way. It might be because she's the only girl left around here, but I think it's more that that. Since I first found her, just lying there, I felt like I had to take care of her. She was just so unable to know what to do in this situation. I don't know how I know what to do; I just do. But she has no idea, so I had to take her with me.

And now, I can just tell I'm slowly falling for her and I don't know how or why. Maybe because she is so smart and strong. So that's why I block her out by making mean remarks. So that she can't tell and so that maybe I can forget about it over time. It's not going to help anyone right now.

Never the less, when I walk in and she's all cuddled up in Sam's arms, fast asleep, I can't help but let the wave of jealousy wash over me and make a remark.

"You're not doing her broken ribs any favours by letting her lie down on the floor like that." I say, with the slightest hint of bitterness.

"You'll wake her." is all he says in reply, smiling gently down at her, stroking a piece of hair out of her face.

I sigh, annoyed and even a little bit more jealous. "You don't have to be like that with her."

He frowns, finally looking away from her. "Like what?"

"Always holding her and looking after her. It's not needed."

He sighs, shaking his head and looking back down at Holly. "She's my best friend and I thought I lost her and she thought she lost me. We just want to be together for a while."

"Best friend?" I scoff. "Are you sure that's it?"

His eyes widen as he looks up at me in surprise. "That's what this is about? You're jealous of me? You've got a thing for Holly and you're taking it out on me?!"

I laugh, bitterly, ready to lie. "Not in the slightest."
