When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

40. 40.

Jake's point of view.

"Play the G chord." I tell Holly. Evan's been sleeping all day and the others are all playing some board game so I've taken this chance to teach her guitar... it's not been that successful, but it's been fun. "No, no, that's an A chord!"

She laughs. "No it's not! This is an A chord!"

She plays a G chord. I laugh, face palming. "Holly, this is impossible."

"I remember how to play the E minor!" she protests.

"That's the easiest chord."

"It's still a chord!"

"Okay, okay!" I agree, grinning. "Okay, do E minor, we'll work on your strumming pattern. There are two main ones. Down, down, down, down, up. Or down, down, up, up, down, up."

She looks at me blankly and I laugh, taking the other guitar to demonstrate. There is a weird feeling in my stomach. It's whenever I look at her and speak to her and get time alone with her. It's just Holly in general. I don't know what it is. Actually, I do know and that's the problem.

I know that I'm slowly falling in love with her. There's just something about her that is so hard to resist. She's got a sort of playful disposition and also a touch of innocence which just makes it impossible for me to not want to look after her and love her.

But I know I can't love her. Well, I'm supposed to make her think I love her, but I'm not really supposed to. That would be dangerous.

Because I work for John Sovey.
