When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

15. 15.

"I'm not telling you how to treat her." Evan shouts after Sam. "But you know what? We may love her differently, but I don't love her any less than you do-"

"Shut up." Sam scowls. "You think you love her?! You're deluded! I've known her for most of my life, you've known her for a few days-"

"That doesn't mean a thing." Evan says, firmly. He turns to me. "Holly, are you happy? With me, I mean."

I nod. "You're one of the only things that is making me happy right now." I say. "The other being you, Sam. So both of you, grow up."

And this time, I am the one to storm in front of them both.

We walk all day and find nothing. We just keep walking and walking in silence. It's quite cold but that's the least of our problems. There is nothing left at all. They bombed everything and there is nothing to find. I don't know what's happening, I just know we're in danger. I don't even know how we're in danger, but we are.

"Hey." Sam is suddenly walking beside me and Evan is walking behind. "It's night. Wanna set up camp for tonight?"

"Sure. So is it okay if I sleep within a meter of Evan or will I get pregnant?" I ask, sarcastically.

"Sorry, sorry." he says. "Okay, I'll just ignore him. Come on, let's go settle down somewhere."

We do and the boys go to sleep but I just lie there, thinking everything over. I suddenly realise that someone might want to kill us. Not for any reason, just because they're trying to kill people. I can't just sleep and let us be taken.

"Go to sleep, Hol." Evan whispers after a while.

"One of us has to keep watch." I whisper back. I'm not mad at him anymore. It's kind of impossible to be mad at him for more than an hour and I don't know why.

"I will." he says. He moves over to where I'm lying and holds me to him. "Are you okay? You're shaking."

"Cold." I say, which isn't a lie. It's freezing at night. He takes off his jacket and lets me put it on. I laugh, tiredly. "You gentleman, you."

He laughs. "You really should sleep."

"I can't." I tell him. "Can you?"

"No." he says.

"What do we do next, Evan?" I ask, suddenly scared. "We literally have no idea what's happening. We can't do anything about it and we're probably in danger but there's nowhere to hide."

He shrugs. "We just keep going."
