When We Run

Your life can change in a heartbeat.
I walked downstairs and when I came back, everyone was dead and everything was over. But I survived and I ran.

10. 10.

Holly's point of view.

"So." I say as we both walk along. "Aren't you supposed to lure me into your lair, not out of it?"

Evan laughs. "I just wanted to speak to you without blondie down there listening."

"You don't have to be so mean to him, you know?" I glance at him, sideways. "He's done nothing wrong."

"Oh Holly." Evan sighs. "There are many, many things men will not ever understand about women. Men just have a few things that women won't understand about us. It's a complicated process on who we choose to like."

"You are full of such bullshit." we both laugh. "Okay, okay, but what have you got against him?"

He just waves the question away. "Anyway, I guess I just wanted to apologise."

I nod. "Go on."

He stops and looks at me. "I just did it."

I cross my arms. "Go on." I repeat.

He sighs. "I feel bad for being so mean to you, okay? Not Sam, you. I just wanted to say thank you for being nice even when I am being such an asshole."

I duck my head, smiling. "It's nothing."

"No." I feel him take both of my hands and he stands pretty close to me, looking down, waiting for me to look up. In the end, he just gives up and tilts my chin up, taking my hand again afterwards. He smiles at me. "I want you to know we're going to be okay. I don't care what happens from here, I don't care how much I may act like I hate you, I don't and I want us to stick together. Yes, Sam can come along too, but it's important that me and you stay together. Just never be scared."

I frown for a moment, confused to his sudden wave of kindness to me, but I just smile in the end, because it's easier to just accept it. "Okay."

He smiles. "Promise?"

"Promise." I say, tilting my head up that little bit more.

I am suddenly overwhelmed with feelings for Evan. I don't know where the hell they came from but he seems to feel the same. I know this is such a stupid place in time for this to happen and I should be worried about what's happened here in the city, but we're in hiding at the moment. We're safe. So I stand up a little bit taller and he leans in.

His nose is touching mine and his lips are brushing on mine as he speaks. "Hol-"

He is cut off by a loud bang in the distance. We both look over to where it came from and there is a big cloud of smoke and still some fire. In the sky, there are a few helicopter's and planes.

"Go." Evan says, pushing me forward. "Run, Holly!"

I feel so nervous that it's hard to even concentrate on anything but running. It's happening again. What could they possibly want? What could they gain from this? And why are they hitting the same area again? Who even is it?! I hear another bomb being dropped and run faster and finally reach the trap door to Evan's room.

I fling it open and start running down the stairs, trusting Evan to shut it behind him. I start to trip as I reach the end of the stairs, but I just run over to Sam who is stood up, looking worried. His face relaxes as he sees me and I rush over, into his arms.

"Oh god." he whispers, holding me. "That was terrifying."

"I know." I breathe out, deeply. "You okay?"

"I'm fine." he smiles as he pulls away.

I turn around and Evan is stood, leaning against the wall and just looking down at the floor. Suddenly, everything adds up. Evan feels ignored because I'm so caught up with Sam. I mean, you can't blame me, Sam is my best friend. But now I know how Evan has been feeling about me, it makes sense.

I walk over to him and he looks up. I open my arms and he gets off the wall and holds me tight. He's only a little bit taller than me, unlike Sam who towers over me, so I can easily bury my face in his neck, just to stop myself from crying.

"We should sleep." I say, pushing back from Evan.

"You guys sleep." Sam says, pulling on his jacket. "I'm gonna keep watch outside."

"No." I say. "They're still out there."

"I wouldn't object to it-"

I cut him off with a glare and he puts his hand up in surrender. "No you're right Holly, we all need to stay inside."

Sam sits down on the floor, his headphones back on and Evan climbs onto the sofa bed, lying down and closing his eyes. I just stand there for a moment, still in shock. Why is this happening to me? Why are they bombing everything? I just almost died and my heart is still beating fast in my chest.

"Hol?" Evan says quietly, looking up. "You alright?"

I nod and climb onto the other end of the sofa bed, away from Evan. I know we almost kissed, but it must have just been a one off thing. He seems like the type of guy to do that sort of thing, now I think of it.

But he rolls over until he is right next to me, lying on his back. I look up at him and he is smiling down at me. I laugh and roll onto my side, resting my head on his chest. His arm goes around my waist, the other holding my hand.

I feel safe.
