7. Asking Dad

                                                      Chapter 7

Abby sat by herself, waiting for her Dad to come home. Aunt Tulisa had left a little earlier on and she wasn't in the mood to talk to Jamie. She just wanted her Dad. He had called a few minutes ago and said he was on his way home, but he was taking forever. At least that's what it felt like to Abby. Every few seconds she would glance at the door, waiting to see if her Dad was there. Finally, her Dad came strolling through the door.

'Hello Abby! Where's Aunt Tulisa?'

'She left. She had a book meeting to get too, or something like that.'

'Shame. I needed to speak to her. Anyway.' He plonked his briefcase heavily down onto the table and undid the buttons on his smart jacket.

'How was it? No fires or emergency's? The Brands didn't bother you did they?' Abby shook her head.

'No. But Dad,' Abby held her breath. Should she ask?

'Yes Abby?' Yes, she should.

'Dad, what is the matter with The Brands? Why do they sound familiar? Why won't Aunt Tulisa or you tell me? Why can't I see Jamie?' A whole cascade of questions tumbled rapidly out Abby's mouth. Her Dad sighed and sat down.

'I suppose I should tell you,' he said. Abby sat down and put her chin in her hands, eager to listen.

'You might recognise the surname "Brand" from Mary Brand, the woman who died with your mother.' Abby felt a sudden pang in her chest and she felt slightly sick. It was hard for her to talk and listen about her mother.

'Your mother and Mary were out swimming in the sea one day. Me and Mark (Mary's husband and Jamie's Dad) were on the beach. Mary wanted to swim out further, but your mother didn't. Mary pestered your mother until they both went out further. They went too far out, near to rapids, and the lifeguard told them to come out. But they didn't. Mary and your mother swam further until they got caught in rapids and couldn't swim back to the shore. They were dragged further away and they soon got sucked under. They couldn't come up, the rapids were so strong and they drowned.' Abby was too stunned to say anything.

'Me and Mark were grief-stricken when we were told they had died. I blamed Mark for your mother's death and I vowed never to speak to them again. Mark denied it being Mary's fault and said it was your mother's but it wasn't I assure you. He vowed never to speak to me again and it's been that way since the day it happened. That's why I don't want you talking to Jamie. He might make you do something stupid and you may end up the same way as your mother. I don't want that happening Abby, I loved your mother so much that it took me years to get over her death. In fact, I still am mourning over her today. If that happened to you Abby, I don't know what would become of me.' Abby was still too shocked to say anything. Instead she stood up, ran out the door and out into the garden. She climbed up onto the roof of the greenhouse and sat waiting for Jamie to come out.
