Don't Leave (Death Note Fanfic)

Hailey may only be thirteen, but she's willing to leave Wammy's House to help Matt search for Mello. The problem is, Hailey is scared of lots of things which make the whole ordeal much more complex and she feels like a burden. But as time goes on, will they have to break their one rule? That rule is: don't leave.

1. Goodbye Wammy's

Ever since I was seven years old, I had lived at Wammy’s House Orphanage. I wasn’t an orphan, though; at least I didn’t think I was. I was there because I had loads of fears. And I knew the scientific name for all of them.

My two friends, boys going by the names of Mello and Matt, both left at around fifteen.

“Please take me with you,” I begged Mello, grabbing his arm tightly and staring up into his face.

“No, I’m not dragging you around with me, Hailey,” He shook his arm free and trudged out of the front door with his one bag of belongings, “Do you wanna get yourself killed?”

I knew why he was being like this; L had died. He was angry and sad and, although he may not admit it, he was lost.

“Mello!” I called as I ran to try and pull him back.

Being thirteen and held back by another fifteen year old boy, I didn’t catch him.

It had only been a few months since Mello had left us that Matt came up to me, bag in hand.

“Y-you’re going too?” I stammered, tears filling my eyes.

“Hey, don’t cry,” He said, placing his hands reassuringly on my shoulders, “I’m not finished yet.”

“What is it?” I asked, gripping his stripy shirt in a feeble attempt to stop myself from crying.

“Do you want to come with me?”

I was overwhelmed. I gave my favourite red-head a huge hug and ran off to pack my things.

As quick as I could, I stuffed everything I owned into a rucksack and ran to the door of my dorm room. I looked back at my room; I was probably never going to see this room ever again. My eyes wandered to the mirror on the wall beside the door. There I was; my long, blonde hair falling into my light blue eyes. I smiled then, remembering where I was meant to be going, I jogged down to the front gate where Matt was waiting for me.

In that moment, my life changed forever…
