16. Why I cant Like you...

“Mom, you are being ridiculous!” I yelled, stomping my foot. “You don’t even know Max!(AN: It’s Max George from the Wanted…I’m so mean…:)

“I’ve seen enough to know that he is a lying, stupid cheating son of a gun!” Mom yelled back. “And if you would open your eyes, you would see that too!”

“You can’t forbid me from seeing him! That’s against the law!”

“As long as you live in my house, my word is the law!”

“YEAH, WELL YOUR LAW SUCKS!” I screamed, slamming the door as I ran outside.

“GWENDOLYN ANNE JENKINS, YOU GET YOUR REAR OVER HERE IMMEDIATELY! I am your MOTHER! You will NOT talk to me like that!” Mom ran out after me.

“You are the most horrible mother on the face of this earth! I HATE YOU!” I shrieked. She grabbed my arm to pull me back into the house, but I shoved her off, and pushed her away. She fell. Hard. I watched in horror as my mother crashed onto the concrete driveway. A cry of pain escaped her lips, and I saw blood…so much blood…I screamed. “MOM!!!!!” I knelt close to her and cradled her body close. “Mom, I didn’t mean it, mom…I love you, I’m sorry, please be okay…HELP! SOMEONE PLEASE, CALL 911!” I bellowed. “Mommy,  please…Please…”

“Gwenny…” She gasped. “Gwenny…”

“Mama…please, stay with me…please…I need you, mommy…” I sobbed. I heard the scream of the ambulance, coming closer…but not fast enough.

“Gwen…don’t cry…” She lifted her hand, and pressed it to my cheek. “Don’t cry, pretty girl. Everything will be okay. I promise.” Her eyes closed. “Gwenny…I love you…”

“Mom?” She didn’t reply. The sirens came closer. “Mom?” I started crying again. “Mommy, wake up! Wake up! Please! MOM!!!!!!” I held her body close. “NOOOOOOO!”

****End Flashback****

Harry was silent for a long time. “And she didn’t die right away…” I added, biting my lip. She suffered in the hospital for…days.” I swallowed back tears. “After my mom died, I started getting into a lot of trouble. My dad thought I needed a change of scenery. So we moved. And moved. And moved again. Then my dad couldn’t find work. So we moved here.” I wrapped my hands further around my coffee cup. “And so now you should understand why I can’t like you.”

“Actually…no. No, I don’t.” My head shot up.

“Look, Ann, it happened a long time ago, right? Almost two years. You were sixteen. You’re older, wiser now. And it was an accident.” He brushed his fingers along my cheek, and sparks flew. He pulled away, and I glared at him.

“I can’t just forget it, Harry. I killed my mother. My own mother. I don’t deserve anything. I don’t deserve to have a boyfriend, I don’t deserve to ever love or like anyone. Someone as horrible and disgusting and ugly as me doesn’t deserve anything but to live her life alone, and then die. That’s how it is.” I stared into my coffee, and felt a chill go through me. Harry took a deep breath.

“Why do you think you're ugly?” he asked softly.

“Because I am!” I exploded. I stood up quickly, and threw my empty coffee cup on the ground. I turned and began to walk away, until I heard Harry stand and start singing gently behind me.

“You’re insecure, don’t know what for;
You're turning heads when you walk through the door;
Don’t need makeup to cover up,
Being the way that you are is enough…
Everyone else in the room can see it…
Everyone else but you…”
I felt his arms snake around my waist, and I didn’t stop him.
“Baby, you light up my world like nobody else;
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground, it ain’t hard to tell
You don’t know…You don’t know you’re beautiful…
That’s what makes you beautiful…”
 I could listen to his voice for hours. It was low and kind of raspy, but in a cool sort of way. He made it sound like he was singing right to me. “Annie…You are beautiful. You made a mistake. Don’t let it ruin your life.”

“Shhhh…” he whispered. “Just listen. I really like you, Annie. But I will wait for you. If you're not ready, I’ll wait.” He let me go. “I’m not going anywhere!” he said, holding his arms out. I smiled, and hugged him.

“I know, I know. Sorry for yelling at you.”

“It’s okay.” Harry shrugged.

“Harry, you can’t tell anyone what I just told you, okay? It’s top secret information.”

“Well, duh…” Harry rolled his eyes at me. “I won’t tell anyone. Don’t worry.” He kissed my forehead. “I promise.”
