The Endless Chain

This story is a romantic short story/play. It's about love, the dangers of it and how it can effect everyone. Oh, and it's in reverse order (There are 10 chapters). I used this as a final project for my English class and received an A on it. Apparently it was one of the best stories my teacher had ever read. Let's see if he's right...

8. Chapter 8

Philadelphia, PA, May 3rd, 2013

Keith, Paul, Rebecca and Sam all left to go to a party somewhere a few blocks from campus. Tony is waiting behind at Robert Hall for Ashley. All of them are feeling a buzz from the alcohol in their system, but none of them are drunk.

I sat in the Robert Hall lobby waiting for Ashley to show up. She finally came through the two sets of glass doors a few minutes later. It was about 10:45 pm now.

“It’s about time you showed up!” I said impatiently as I ran up to grab her bag.

“Sorry.” she said apologetically.

I took the bag from her and it immediately brought my arms down to the floor. “What the hell is in here? A dead body?”

“No, just my girl stuff.” Ashley replied.

“Well, your bag weighs about as much as me…” I said as I pressed the elevator button, calling the elevator down to the lobby.

The elevator came and the door opened after ten quick seconds of waiting. “I’ll be right back.” I yelled as the door closed.

The elevator went up to the 7th floor and as soon as the door opened I ran out with her massive bag flailing behind me. I opened the door to my room. Room 713. I then put her bag up against the stand where the TV and microwave were, by our window that didn’t open. My roommate Brian went home for the weekend, so Ashley was going to sleep in his bed for the night.

I ran out of my room, nearly forgetting my key. I turned and kicked the closing door back open, grabbed it off my bed and ran to the elevators. I was getting more of a workout doing this than I did at the gym lifting this week.

The elevator came and I rode it down, alone. I walked by the security thing that opens and closes. “You ready?” I said to Ashley.

“As ready as I’ll ever be!” she said ecstatically.

We walked out of Robert Hall and down the steps. We continued to walk on the side of another dorm shortly reaching the Avenue. We took a right and for some reason there were about thirty guys all along the sidewalk spanning two blocks.

She then leans up next to me. “Here take my arm.” Ashley said as she put her arm next to mine. We interlocked arms. “Good. Now I probably won’t get abducted by some total stranger.” We walked down the street, arm in arm. It was absolutely glorious. Holding her arm and protecting her from potential danger in the cold, star-lit night air was easily one of the best moments I had my freshman year, other than the time I got her number at the Dining Hall, which was on March 15th, 2013. It’s probably a little weird that I remember that.

We reached the house and she unlocked her arm from mine. “Thank you for that.” she said as we climbed the steps to the house.

I was greeted at the door by two guys. I gave my five dollar bill to one and received a red solo cup from the other, along with a little check mark written in black sharpie. Ashley was waiting inside the doorway for me, since girls didn’t have to pay and could just walk in.

We searched for the keg or the coolers full of jungle juice (it was a mixture of kool-aid and cheap, crappy vodka.) I heard from someone yelling that there was one keg in the backyard and one in the basement, and that the jungle juice was in the kitchen. She wanted beer and I wanted juice, so we parted ways in the kitchen. I ran into Paul in the kitchen.

“Yo Paul!” I yelled over the music.

“What’s good Tony?” Paul said while raising his cup.

I started to fill my cup up at the cooler. “How packed is the basement?” I asked.

“It’s not too bad. But be warned, the ceilings are leaking and some jackass lit up a blunt down there.” Paul said as he brought a girl he was with closer to him.

Just as I finished filling my cup, Ashley walked back in with her cup of beer half gone. “Hey Paul.” She said while taking another drink from her cup.

“Do you want to go in the basement?” I asked, as people shoved their way by.

“Yeah, let’s go!” She pointed towards the stairwell with her other hand.

We shoved our way by at least twenty people before making it to the most ridiculous staircase I have ever seen. The steps were each two feet lower than the next and had the length of about a beer can. Not to mention some of them partially spiraled down. So it was nearly impossible to fit a shoe on there without tripping. I’m honestly amazed I never have before.

Ashley and I made it down the stairwell intact. There was a sea of people everywhere. It became more and more dense the closer you got to the music, to the point where it was nearly impossible to move.

To my left were people grinding. Straight in front of me, more grinding. And to my right, was a wall. I looked to my right where Ashley was and she was gone. I looked around but I couldn’t find her. I ran into Rebecca and Keith dancing together on my search though.

“Hey guys.” I shouted. “Have you seen Ashley?”

“Yeah.” Keith pointed over in the direction of the DJ, where I could see in plain sight, Ashley grinding with some guy.

It hurt.

I felt like going up there and punching the guy. But that would just be morally unethical. So instead… I decided to drink, drink to the point where I don’t remember a damn thing that happened.

And that’s what Tony did. He stood by the keg, chugged his cups of extremely foamy beer and then refilled it, just to do it all over again. After a few times of doing that he went over to the makeshift bar in the back of the basement and bought five shots of vodka and downed them… shot after shot after shot.

What Tony didn’t realize was that Ashley had stopped grinding with that guy after about two songs and left the party with Keith and Rebecca. Paul had also ditched the party to go hang out at his fraternity house with his brothers.

Tony was gone now. He made his way to the staircase. He figured he should attempt to go back to his dorm, so he didn’t pass out at the party; at least he still had some brain power to function. However, on his way stumbling up the staircase he ran into Sam. Sam had very little to drink at the party, so she was almost back to normal.

“Tony! Where are you going?” She tried acting drunk, and did a pretty good job at it.

“Back to Robert Hall.” Tony said, tripping over the R’s.

“Want to dance with me?” Sam asked.

“Sure.” Tony mumbled as he turned around and ran into a girl as he attempted to get down the stairs. “Sorry.”

Sam followed him down the stairs and they started to grind. Being completely drunk, he wasn’t doing a fantastic job at it. But it would make due.

After four songs, Tony turns around. “Sam, I think we should go back.” He looks at his phone. “It’s tweltvity eighteen. The cops will be here soon.”

Sam laughed and then stared at Tony. Tony stared back. And then Sam leaned in and they started making out. This continued until the party got broken up five minutes later, and then it continued on the walk back to Robert Hall.

Ashley had fallen asleep on one of the couches in the lounge. So when they reached the 7th floor, they went to Tony’s room and continued to make out. Tony started to undress, and so did Sam. Tony then threw up on the floor. And the night was history.
