Second Chances.

It's been only a few months since Charlie left and shattered Zayn's world and she prays that they will never have to meet again.
Unfortunately, Charlie's world once again collides with Zayn's, when the band has to do a charity gig at her University and Charlie does everything to avoid him but somehow ends up in his arms at the end of the night.

6. -Chapter Five-

[A/N: The charity gig is an outdoor gig, just FYI.]

I sat numbly down in my seat, as the wind blew around me. My mind was blank, my heart was racing, and my palms were sweating. I dug my nails painfully into my sensitive legs, trying to distract myself from what was going to happen today, but it wouldn’t work.

Today was the day.

Today would determine whether or not I’d get over him or not…I think.

Or today could just be another normal day; if somehow, I managed to avoid Zayn Malik for the whole fifteens hours that would pass by soon.

All the bands would soon be pouring onto the campus, filing into their separate dressing rooms, and then settling down until it was their turn to practice their set list for the charity gig.

[A/N: All the bands I include for the charity gig scene probably wouldn’t do this but I don’t know so I’m just going with it.]

As of right now, only one band had arrived and they were currently playing their cover of Somebody That I Used To Know. I always loved Mayday Parade’s version of this song and now that I’m actually hearing it live, I love it even more.

A tap on my shoulder jerked me out of my paradise moment – watching a favorite band of mine playing – and I unintentionally swung my arm around and smacked the person directly in the face, knocking them backwards.

“Ow, you seriously hit hard, you know that?” Rae muttered, rubbing her injured jaw but waving it away as soon as she me almost start to tear up. “Calm down, damn Charlie, it isn’t that big of a deal.”

“I know, I know,” I let my head hang. “I’m just emotionally vulnerable right now, sorry.”

She bit her lip, throwing a comforting arm over my shoulder, “Hey, you’ll be able to make it through today. Hey, you might now even see him, at all, throughout this whole gig?”

I snorted, “Unlikely, karma is still kicking my ass…especially since I made the wrong decision six months ago.”

Rae’s eyebrows furrowed together as she then asked, “Why didn’t you stay? Why didn’t you wait for Zayn? I mean…you already slept with him, so you pretty much covered being vulnerable with him, so what made you leave?”

I nervously played with my hands as I struggled with wanting to tell her and with not wanting to.

“I…” I started, trying to gather my thoughts. “I was scared that…because we had already been together as far as two people can be…that he was playing with me. That he was playing a mean game and as soon as he won…he’d leave…and I couldn’t handle that.”

Rae shook her head, “Why would he do that? I know I don’t know him personally, but come on; he’s living his dream with his four best friends and is having the best time of his life so why wouldn’t he try and be in a relationship with a girl he had a major crush on a few years ago?”

Charlie let out a big sigh, “That’s just the point; he’s living his dream that involves him being one of the biggest pop-stars in one of the most popular boy bands…why would he ever want to be in a relationship with someone like me, when he basically could get any girl he wanted?”

“Because, putting aside his pop-star image, he is a normal human being like the rest of us, and every one of us wants to find that one person that we can be with for forever,” Rae said as we walked across the grassy lawn, to greet the next band arriving. “And being a part of one of the biggest boy bands in the world just makes it ten times as hard to find someone who likes you for you, and not for who you are to the world.”

I abruptly stopped and stared at her, complete wide-eyed.

She shoved me playfully, giving me a face, “Why are you staring at me? It’s creepy.”

“You just got totally deep…it’s so weird when you do that, only just because it doesn’t happen often,” I replied as soon as we reached the main building of the campus, opening the door and letting Rae go in first. “It just caught me off guard, that’s all.”

“Fine, I just won’t do it anymore,” Rae sulked as we walked down the hallway. “But you needed to hear it anyway because…” she suddenly trailed off and stopped in her tracks.

“Because what?” I asked before following her gaze and saw five guys walking towards us. I rolled my eyes at her and whispered in her ear, “Don’t be rude and just stand there, it’s just the next band, let’s go greet them.”

I pulled away just as she said, only for me to hear, “Wait, Charlie, it’s…”

I was too far away to hear the rest of her sentence, but if I had stayed, I would’ve heard her say to me, “It’s One Direction.”

My hand started to extend and my mouth spoke before my mind comprehended who I was seeing in front of me, “Hi, you must be…”

There he was, in front of me, staring right back at me. Everything paused and stilled as the boys came to a stop and the light shone down on Zayn. I pushed past my nerves and tried to offer a smile but then Zayn did something unexpected.

His eyes darkened, his exterior grew cold, and then he started walking towards me. As he neared and pushed past me, he crashed harshly into my left shoulder, which nearly caused me to fall over and spoke quite loudly for everyone there to hear.

“Go to hell, Charlie.”
