Coming Home

Maria is the kind of girl who's known. Not in a slutty way, but because of her strength. Her dad died in the military and now her boyfriend is there. The only thing keeping her alive is her brother, Alex.

1. ~chapter one~

Authors POV

Maria was only 9 when she waited for her dad to come home. She waited and waited and waited. She counted down the days, and made signs and was telling everybody about the return of her dearly missed father. Maria hadn't seen her father in almost a year because of his deploy. She was so excited to see him, but she would have to wait much longer than expected. Her mom had to carry the weight of not telling her until the day of his planned, and expected return. She had tears in her eyes, but she thought they where happy. Her mom crouched to the ground, weakly smiled and called her princess over. Maria ran over with the small American flag in her tiny hands.

"Baby. Daddy isn't coming home." she whispered to the small child.

Confusion and anger spread across her face. She looked down at the flag, then back up at her mother. "What?" She made out "Why mommy?"

"Cause he's with Pop-pop... and Rex, sweet heart."

She was silent for a minute, then realised why she hadn't seen Rex in years, or Pop Pop for months. They had died. Gone. Put six feet under ground. With only a tomb stone to represent a life. A lost life.

"He died, mommy?" she whispered into her ear.

"I'm sorry, baby." She cried into her daughter's back, and her daughter cried into her shoulder.
