Trouble Maker

"He hasn't been the same since you guys got together. He seems happier and kinder. He acts like a totally new person, like he has a new purpose to live. You're changing his life."

"No, he's changing mine."

6. Six

A text from Niall popped up on my phone the next afternoon.

The boys said to dress formal. That’s the only clue they’ve given about our date. See you later. Xx

I smiled at my phone. Two x’s? That’s two kisses. Thinking of Niall made me blush. I started to type my response.

Those cheeky boys. Can’t wait for tonight. Xx

I hesitated before pressing send. I had typed this message six times, thought of my words for ten minutes. I didn’t want to say the wrong thing and seem stupid. I didn’t want to respond to quickly and seem clingy.

I released a breathe and sat on the bed, putting my phone next to me. I will not check it again. I have to get ready. I want tonight to be perfect. Tonight will be perfect.

I opened the small closet and looked through my clothing. My hands pushed through each top and dress.

“Too blue, too sparkly, too dark, too bright, too… slutty.” I sighed. “Ew, why did I even pack this?”

I settled on a strapless, light yellow dress. It came down to a little bit above my knees. A brighter yellow lace trimmed the bottom. I laid it on the bed, and picked up my grey Converse.

I quickly showered and dried off. After blow drying my hair, I curled into loose spirals. Next was makeup. I applied foundation, lip gloss, mascara, and a touch of golden eye shadow. I brushed my teeth and rinsed. Changing into my dress, I smoothed the fabric down with my fingers.

“Perfect.” I whispered. I grabbed my sparkly black clutch bag and put my lip gloss in it. Sitting on my bed, I put on my sneakers. There was a knock on the door. I stood up, smoothed my dress, and smiled.

I opened the door. Louis stood in front of me. “Oh, it’s you.”

“Well hello to you too, Little Ms. Sunshine.” He said.

“Hi Louis. What’s up?” I put my clutch on the dresser.

“I was about to invite you to hang out with the boys and I, but Zayn said you were going out with Niall tonight. I just came by to check on you.”

“That’s very sweet of you, but I’m fine.” I smiled softly.

“He’s a nice guy. You deserve someone like him. After all the jerks you dated back home.” Louis leaned against the door.

“They weren’t all jerks.” I tried to argue.

“Yes they were. I hate seeing you hurt, and that’s exactly what they did to you. You’re really into him. He makes you happy, I can tell.”

“Is it that obvious?” I looked down.

“Yeah. Either that, or you’re wearing a bit too much blush.” Louis joked.

“Um, hey Lou.” Niall said. “Hi Zoey.”

“Hi.” I smiled.

“Well, I’m gonna head back to Liam’s room. You two kids have fun tonight.” Louis hugged me. He gave Niall a ‘bro hug’, I guess that’s what you call it, and whispered, “Take care of her.” Louis walked down the hallway.

“Shall we, beautiful?” Niall held out his arm. He had on black jeans, white hightops, a pale blue V-neck, and a black blazer.

“We shall, handsome.” I laughed, linking my arm with his. “So where are we heading tonight?”

“I still don’t know. Liam and Zayn refused to even tell me the directions to the place.”

“How are we supposed to get there?” I asked, pushing the button in the elevator.

“Um, I think they called Ron to drive us there.” Niall said, as we walked into the lobby.

“Hello Mr. Horan, Ms. Tomlinson.” Ron greeted us. He was dressed in a suit and tie. He opened the back door of the limousine and I slid in, followed by Niall.

“Want a drink?” Niall opened the mini fridge next to him. I nodded, while he popped open a can of Coca Cola. He grabbed two champagne glasses from the rack and filled them with soda.

“Fancy.” I smirked. He handed one glass to me. “To first dates, and new beginnings.” I held out my glass and he clinked his against mine.

After a short ride, Ron pulled over to a closed road. He jogged around the side and opened our door. Niall held out his hand and helped me out of the limo.

“Follow the signs and you’ll find where you’re supposed to be.” Ron explained before driving away.

“The signs? What signs?” Niall asked, intertwining our fingers.

“Those.” I pointed towards the ground. There were light up arrows placed along the road. They were spaced about three feet or so apart.

Niall shrugged and we started walking the path of arrows. We found our way to a view point balcony sort of thing over looking the city of Nashville. Little lights decorated the gazebo. In the middle, was dinner for two.

I stood on the edge, gripping the railing. “Wow.” was all I could say. Niall joined my side. “It’s beautiful.”

“Yeah, it’s a great view.” Niall said, with his eyes locked on me.

“I was talking about the city.” I cockily smiled at him.

“I was talking about you. This is beautiful, but nothing compares to you.”

“You realized you just quoted your song. Is that some cheesy way of trying to impress me?”

“I wasn’t trying. But if it worked, then yeah, that’s exactly what I was trying to do.” Niall chuckled softly.

“Come on, doofus. Let’s eat.” I pulled his hand over to the table.

“Read my mind.” Niall sat down next to me.

On the table, there were two glasses filled with iced tea, two plates of pasta, and a small card. We both folded the napkins over our laps. Niall began eating while I picked up the little paper.

“Finding the one you belong with is life’s greatest journey. There will be pain, suffering, heartbreak, and loss, but in the end, you will find happiness. Life’s a climb, but the view is great. Signed, Liam and Zayn.” I read.

“Whoa. That was deep.” Niall wiped his mouth. “Isn’t that last part a Hannah Montana quote?”

“Yeah, I think so.” I laughed.

“Do you hear that?” Niall asked. “That music?”

“Yeah, it kind of sounds like Blake Shelton. It can’t be, he isn’t even in Tennessee right now.” I said.

“Want to go check it out?” Niall stood up, taking my hand. I nodded and followed him down the road. We walked for five minutes and the music grew louder. Soon, we stood in front of a stage crowded with a few hundred people, with the one and only Blake Shelton on the stage.

“This song is for a couple of lovers out there tonight, Niall and Zoey.” Blake said, before starting on his guitar. He sang God Gave Me You, aka, my current favorite song.

The crowd split into two parts, leaving a walkway for us. Niall gripped my hand and led me down the street to a platform. He stood up on it, before extending his hand to me. I took it and climbed up next to him.

“May I have this dance, my lady?” Niall took my hands and put them around his neck. He ran his fingers down my arms, giving me goosebumps, and draped his arms around my waist.

We swayed softly to the beat of the song. He looked down at me, my eyes met his gaze. I leaned into him. His lips met mine.

And in that moment, I was the happiest girl on the planet.
