The Boy Next Door

Aubrey Coles just moved to Holmes Chapel, England from NYC. Aubrey meets the boy next door, Harry Styles, who is going to audition for the X Factor. They become best friends, but who wants to be more than friends? Harry makes it through the auditions, and has to go to boot camp. His mom invites Aubrey along, and she accepts. But why does a phone call make Aubrey suddenly leave?

8. Chapter 8.

*3 days later*

In the past few days, I learned a dance number for bootcamp, and then had to perform it for the judges. Yesterday, I sang for them, and tonight I will find out if I’m moving on.

*Aubrey’s POV*

Harry’s been working really hard these past few days. I have to admit, it was a little funny to watch him at bootcamp. I’ve never seen him dance before, and you could tell he hasn’t danced much in the past. I heard Anne giggle a when he was performing, too.

Harry performed “Stop Crying Your Heart Out” by Oasis last night, and it was good. I hope he moves on tonight.

I’m actually pretty nervous about tonight. Harry is up against some pretty good guys.

For the past two days, we watched Harry perform from the audience. Tonight we’re going to watch the elimination from some TV’s, or “tellys” as they say here, in the waiting room. That way we can meet Harry backstage after.

*Harry’s POV*

“Can the boys category meet here?” a person, who’s part of the backstage crew, yells. We all join him at the bottom of some stairs that lead to the stage. “Okay, you’re all going to go on in a line. Good luck to all of you, and it’s time to go on.” He nods to the stairs, and one lad close to the stairs leads us out.

We all follow each other, one by one. The judges greet us, and start calling names. I clap for each person, like everyone else. I’m pretty sure none of us are actually happy for them, though. By the time they call the fifth person, I start to panic. What are my family members thinking? What is Aubrey thinking?

The judges call out a few more names. None of which are mine. Then they get to the last person. This is it. Go big or go home.

“The final contestant who made it through is…” Simon says, then pauses. “Tom Richards.” I bury my face in my hands. I feel my heart sink and shatter, into a million tiny little pieces, as if it were glass. I played it safe with my song choice, and I can’t dance. I walk off stage and pack my stuff, tears flowing down my cheeks like a river. When I finish, I wait outside on the steps to the main entrance for my dad to bring up the car. I guess Mum and Aubrey are packing their things.

Another lad steps out, waiting for his ride, too, I guess. He looks about my age, with blonde hair. His eyes are bright red, and his cheeks are stained with tear marks. He leans against a pillar and looks at the parking lot.

“It’s really disappointing, isn’t it?” he asks with an Irish accent.

“I know how you feel, mate. I wasn’t expecting this,” I respond.

“I don’t think any of us were.”

“Niall Horan? Harry Styles? Can you come back inside?” a crew member asks us. We look at each other with puzzled looks, and follow the man inside. He leads us backstage, to where a group of people are standing. “Can the following people step forward?” he asks. “Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, and Harry Styles.”

I look at Niall and Louis, the two people I’ve talked to already, who are biting their nails. One boy, Liam, I’ve heard of because he’s been on X Factor before, when he was fourteen. I’ve heard of Zayn, also, because he almost skipped the dance number. He claimed he couldn’t dance. Simon made him come out, though.

We walked on stage with four girls, and the judge, Nicole, greeted us. “Hello.”

“Hi,” we all harmonized.

“Thank you so much for coming back. I know judging from some of your faces that this is really hard. We thought long and hard about it, and we thought of each of you as individuals, and we just feel that you’re too talented to let go of. We think it would be a great idea to have two separate groups.”

Then Simon lifts the microphone to his mouth. “We’ve decided to put you both through.”

We all cheer really loudly. This is amazing! I crouch down, not believing what he just said. I feel someone hugging me, and I stand up. We all group hug.

Simon calls for our attention. He gives us a lifeline, saying we have to work together 10-14 hours a day. He thinks we really have a shot. All of us, with huge smiles on our faces, exit the stage. We enter a hallway, where the other contestants going through and our families are standing. I spot Aubrey.

“Yeahhh!!” I yell, while running faster than the others, my arms wide open. I crash into her, and pick her up off the floor. She laughs as I swing her around, and then I set her down.

“Congratulations!” she exclaims, with a lot of excitement in her voice.

“Harry, you did it!” I hear Mum’s voice as she hugs me from behind. I face her and Dad.

“Good job, lad!” he exclaims, pulling me into a hug.

“Thanks,” I say, pulling away, still smiling.

“So, you’re going to be in a band?” my sister, Gemma, asks. I nod. “That’s exciting!” she pulls me into a hug.

“Wow, I can’t believe this!” I say, after Gemma lets go. I look around and see the other boys standing together. “Aubrey! You have to meet the lads.” I take her hand and pull her across the room.

“Harry!” Louis’ face lights up. I don’t know how that’s possible, since he was already beaming. “We get to be in a band together!”

“Hey Louis! He Niall!” I smile at them.

“Who’s this?” Louis asks, smiling at Aubrey.

“This is Aubrey. Aubrey this is Louis and this is Niall,” I introduce them.

“Hello,” Aubrey says, smiling at them.

The other two boys look at me, like they’re waiting for me to say their names. To be honest, I don’t know them. We look at each other awkwardly.

“We need a band name,” one boy suggested. I’ve heard this boy was on X Factor before, so he must be good.

We all look at each other. “Niall and the Potatoes!” And we’ll all dress like Louis because I like his shoes!” Niall exclaimed, smiling. We all laugh.

“Thanks, lad, but I think we need a different name,” Louis informs Niall.

I look at my feet, and then have an idea. “How about ‘One Direction’? Because we’ll go in one direction, and that’s to the top.”

“I like that!” says the other lad I don’t know.

“One Direction!” Niall says, using an announcer voice. Again, we laugh.

“Are you Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, and Louis Tomlinson?” a member of the crew walks up and asks us. We all nod our heads. “Your room is ready. Floor two, number ten.”

“Thanks,” we say in unison.

“Liam, how about you lead the way for us, since you’ve been here before,” Louis tells one of the lads. Liam smiles, and we grab our luggage and follow him. Aubrey follows behind.

We go up a lift, and Liam takes us down a bright hallway. he opens a brown door on his left.

Liam leads us inside. “Here we are!” We enter a cramped room with five beds that barely fit, and two wardrobes, signalling we have to share. “You want to unpack fast and get to bed, because trust me, tomorrow is going to be a busy day.”
