14. Chapter 14

• Harry •

Just as I was sliding off the last step, I caught the scent of something deliciously familiar. My mouth began to water.

"Harry?" Savannah stuck her head around the corner of the kitchen. "You're never going to believe this. Get in here." She disappeared and I began to drag myself once again.

"A simple good morning would've been nice. You've got-" My eyes caught sight of what she must be talking about.

"I made them. You get first taste." She handed me a fork.

I grabbed a plate and sat, but I gave her the look. "What's the occasion?"

"What do you mean?" She scrunched her face, putting her hands on her hips.

"You want something. What is it?" I continued eating, waiting for her answer. So delicious.

"Pshh." She waved her hand at me. "I don't want- Okay there is one thing I would like you to do for me." She came and sat next to me.

"And what is it?" Some food fell out of my mouth as I talked with it full.

"Well, I know technically we aren't dating... But uhm... There's this dance thingy, and it's kinda fancy... And you have to have a date... So, I was wondering if... Harry will you be my date to the fancy dance thing tonight?" She took a bite from my plate as she waited for me to answer, keeping her eyes on me the whole time.

I blinked away my fantasies. "Yes. I mean, if that's what you want then sure." I shrugged, eating the last of my breakfast.

"Thank you. Oh, this is great." She began to walk away then turned around to say something else. "Just one more thing." Her hair had fallen, it was blocking her eyes. I stood, moving it out of the way. "What is it?"

She tucked some hair behind her ear, looking at the ground. "This isn't it, but you're not going to kiss me again are you?"

"You didn't like?" I pouted my lip playfully; although, the question was a serious one.

"Oh no, I did. I don't know. It's just..." She began to look around. Avoiding eye contact, rocking on her heels, twirling her hair. She was nervous.

"Just what?" I stepped a little closer, my heart pounding a little harder, my hopes growing a little higher.

"Do you not see? I liked it, really liked it actually, that's the problem." She sat on the floor with her head in her knees.

"What's the harm in that?" I shrugged as I sat next to her.

"It could turn into a crush, and it doesn't work. It just doesn't. I would love to love you, but what if it destroys everything we have now?" Her eyes drooped, the corners of her mouth faced downward, even her cheeks looked like they were being effected by gravity.

I didn't need to think, nothing. I have been preparing and waiting for this conversation for weeks. As soon as her words processed, my words were released. "That's just a risk you have to be willing to take."

She leaned onto my shoulder. "I wish you weren't my best friend."

"Yeah, but then you wouldn't even be in this situation right now." I took a moment. Sighing before I spoke again. "I guess that would be a good thing." I was trying to imagine a life without her, growing up without her, it was impossible.

"I'm happy right where I am." She set her hand on my knee and smiled up at me. "Now, I think you should go wash the sand out of your hair. It's probably like an inch thick."

We stood, she began to walk away but I grabbed her arm. The words wouldn't come though.

"We're going to be okay Harry." She hugged me. I wrapped my arms around her, squeezing her.

"Louis and I stopped talking because he slept with my girlfriend. I was the one who caught them together." I squeezed harder as the words came out, the memories flashing through my mind.

She didn't move, didn't break the hug. She just talked to me. "What?"

"That's why I was upset yesterday. It wasn't you at all, it was Louis."

"And you still invited him?"

"Yeah, I don't think he'll come though. Even if he does it's not like I'm gonna break down and kill him or anything. It's just something that I pushed down and hearing him resurfaced it. All of this, it hurts."

She patted my back as she talked and I cried into her neck. "I know Harry. I know."
