25. Who Are You?

I broke into tears. The two stared at me with a worried look like they had no idea how to cheer their best friend up. No one said a word, while I sat their weeping like I had just lost my dog.

Lexi: I-I still love him. What do I do?

Another couple seconds of awkward silence until Joslyn stood up and grabbed my hand.

Joslyn: C’mon.

Lexi: Wait wha-

Ashley followed behind as if they had planned it out, which they obviously didn’t. We walked down the stairs and Ashley grabbed my coat and makeup bag.

Joslyn: Looks like we’re havin’ a girls night out!

Ashley: Whoo! No boy drama, no worries, no cares, just like how it used to be.

I stood there without saying a word as my shoulders drooped in front of me.

Ashley spun me around and snatched my phone out of my hand and placed it in a plastic bag along with her and Joslyn’s. My face appeared disgusted but I just went along with it as they sat me down and started to wipe off my dripping mascara and applying new makeup.

Ashley: No phones tonight. We need to just have fun… I was thinking about hitting up the club in Toronto?

They both winked at each other and stared at me waiting to see my reaction.

Lexi: I’m not going to a club….

Without being able to get another word in, I was dragged out the door trying to slide on my jacket. We got in the car, and right away the bass shook the car to where I was already getting a headache just for the several seconds I was in there. I leaned my head against the window and stared at the trees we were passing by while Joslyn and Ashley screamed their lungs out with the music. I blocked everything out around me. I didn’t want to be going to this “club”, I didn’t want to party and dance and get drunk and have sex. I wanted to relax… And that’s all I wanted. To just forget about everything and get lost in my thoughts. The way my brain works confuses people, but that’s just how I am. It’s like one day you could be living the dream and the next all you can think about is how you wish you could just disappear off the planet. I couldn't help it; and considering that Joslyn and Ashley were my best friends and ignored my every word, made me hurt even more.

The street lights flickered on as the light outside slowly began to grow darker and darker. We pulled up to a ghetto-looking, square building with colors flashing from the inside and the walls pounding like they could burst at any second. I shivered and followed in behind the two. Joslyn was already pouncing up and down before we even got through the line to get in.

Joslyn: This gon’ be a partay!!

I rolled my eyes and stared off. I scanned through the crowd of drunk teens grinding up against each other and  the ones sitting off in the corner swallowing each other’s tongues. I shook my head laughing until I came across a tall, blonde-hair, blue-eyed guy walking towards me. I admit it, he was beautiful. The first moment I saw him I felt like I could daze on forever. But then myself got to me, and I freaked. The usual. He got closer and closer and I awkwardly zoomed off and hid behind Ashley.

Ashley: Ahaha, what the hell are you doing?

Lexi: Oh… Sorry.

She brushed it off and never said another word about it. We got closer to the front of the line and I began to get more nervous. This wasn’t me. I didn’t want to be here.

Joslyn: Lex I got the wristbands!

She slipped mine on me and pulled me out to the dance floor with her and Ashley.

Ashley: YASS!

Joslyn: Turn up!!

I slowly moved my body to the beat while Ashley already managed to find herself grinding on a guy. I was smashed in between hundreds of smoke and alcohol-smelling, sweaty bodies. Joslyn was soon nowhere to be found and I lost Ashley in the crowd of teenagers. I wanted to leave. They didn’t care. I made my way out soon enough and got a bottle of water from the bar and took a seat on the couch. My head started to pound as the music got louder. Again, all that seemed to cross my mind was Justin. ‘I missed him. I missed him. I missed him. But I didn’t. But I did.’ My head was so jumbled by all of the sounds that I spaced off as my tired eyes threatened to close, until I felt a tap on my shoulder. The boy sat down by me and that was when I realized he was “the guy” that I saw earlier… The one that I called “attractive”.

Jenner: I’m Jenner, it’s nice to meet such a beautiful girl like you. What’s your name?

I was charmed by the way he spoke and how he talked to me, as well. His voice had a tint of a southern accent but you could tell he was trying to cover it. I stuck my hand out asking for a hand shake which he then returned.

Lexi: Lexi. Well Alexandra, but you know. What people call me… Lexi… Just call me Lexi.

I shyly giggled to myself just because of how awkward I was being. He noticed and he laughed along with me.

Jenner: Hey… You don’t have to be shy around me. I don’t bite.

I laughed again, just making the situation weirder than it had to be.

Jenner: You have an adorable laugh.

Lexi: Awh… Thanks.

I turned back and looked at the crowd because I wasn't sure of what else to say.

Jenner: Soo… You like to dance?

Lexi: Dancing? I love dancing. Just not this kind of dancing.

Jenner reached his hand out, asking me to let him help me up.

Jenner: Well why not give it a chance? C’mon… I’ll show you.

He led me out to the dance floor and all that went through my brain was “Justin” “This should be Justin” “This guy is a complete stranger”. But what else was I supposed to do? I followed him into the middle of all of the people. He had to almost yell just because of how loud it was.

Jenner: Here. Just dance. Move your hips with it babe.

And this was the moment I just wanted to cry. This was the moment I couldn't do anything but do what he told me because of how crammed we all where. I swayed back and forth as he thrusted his body towards me with every motion I made. I felt uncomfortable, but I almost liked it; and I never got this with Justin… Maybe I was changing. Jenner stood there dancing and pouring drink after drink down his throat. After a few minutes of dancing and drinking, he then decided to throw a drink in my face. Just as I was beginning to enjoy his presence; it was ruined by his stupid move.

Lexi: What the hell?!?

I pushed him off of me and he then swung a punch at my cheek. I tried to push through the obnoxious crowd but was blinded by the bitter alcohol dripping down my face.

I finally managed to get over to the lounge couches and I sat down with tears rolling down my face, as I tried to wipe off the liquid with my sleeve. No sight of Ashley or Joslyn. I waited and watched the neon clock hanging from the wall for around 45 minutes. Still no sight of them. I could tell that at that moment Jenner was staring at me from a distance so I quickly got up and ran out the door and started trying to signal a taxi.

The tips of my fingers started to freeze because of how cold it was. I didn't even consider going back inside. I was tired of Ashley and Joslyn treating me this way… They knew I wasn't a “party animal” yet all they wanted to do when I was around was go out and get wasted. It seemed like no one cared anymore.

Finally, a yellow and black taxi pulled up by the curb and greeted me to get in the car. I hopped in and told the friendly old man where to drop me off. The car ride was an awkward one and all the man seemed to talk about was how much he missed his wife and kids; but I carefully listened to him and we actually made a conversation out of it.

Taxi driver: Is here okay, ma’am?

Lexi: Yes… Here is fine. Thank you.

The nice man got out of the car and opened it for me and I stepped out onto the quiet street of Stratford. I handed him the tip and began to walk along the sidewalk. I started to hum the words to the new song I had been recently writing.

Lexi: I never wanted you to go away…

Right as I turned the corner of my street I was shocked by the feeling of a another hand being set on my shoulder. I nervously turned around and my eyes met with a dark brown pair, almost exactly like Justin’s.

Lexi: Oh my God… Who are you?

Boy: I’m sorry… I really didn’t mean to scare you. I’m Jason McCann. Just call me Jason.
