One and then Two

An eight year old girl got wings. Now she's fifteen, flying at night for the thrill of it and convinced there's another like her doing the same. On her quest to find them, she must be careful not to reveal what she is.

11. Mystery Flyer

I piled on the speed, cutting through the air. I could make out the shape of the flyer in the distance and willed myself to go faster. They climbed higher, so did I. We ended up in the cloud layer, my vision occasionally being blinded by the water vapour. They dipped, dodged and swirled but I matched them pace for pace. I had been flying for nine years and my endurance was excellent.

The mystery flyer started to slow, giving up perhaps, but I kept my guard up and rushed in. The figure was definitely male, much like in my dream. Once again following my dream, the figure came a little closer to me and I took a breath before looking at his eyes. Bright blue eyes stared at me but so much of his face was covered that I couldn't make out who it was. He smiled, showing it through his creased eyes, before flying off so fast that I couldn't even possibly try to follow.

Waking up the next morning, I was not ready to go to school- at all. My nose was blocked, throat sore and my head was warm. I decided to take a sick day.

"Alex, honey, are you sure you want to stay home today? I have to go to work and so I won't be able to take care of you," my mum told me.

"I'll be fine, I just feel really bleugh," I replied.

She gave me a little kiss on my head and smoothed my hair. A coolness spread through me and so I gave a little smile. She waved to me and I heard the door close moments later.
