One and then Two

An eight year old girl got wings. Now she's fifteen, flying at night for the thrill of it and convinced there's another like her doing the same. On her quest to find them, she must be careful not to reveal what she is.

7. Back to Reality- and School

"The girl that was at first thought to have been attempting suicide before she revealed that she has wings has sprung debates world wide regarding genetic mutations and human genetic material. This incident is thought to have been a hoax but flyers were also dropped suggesting that there were more like her-"

I turned of the TV and took a deep breath, trying my best not to freak out. I tried to act as though I wasn't the girl who had wings and so made my way to school as usual.

Selena was at her locker, sticking up a ridiculous poster of some underground band she had found and claimed to love- she was really just trying to be a hipster- as I walked into school.

"Alex? Oh thank the Lord I really have to talk to you," she said just as I opened my locker. I closed it a little so I could see her face and was a little startled when her big brown eyes appeared, full of worry.

"Selena, what's wrong?" I asked, completely sincere for once. Could she have figured out I have wings?

"I need to know, and be honest, how stupid do I look with this jumper on? I'm freezing and I lost my jumper on the way to school after I made out with Michael in the park. Then I had to go to the lost and found and, well, lets not kid ourselves, this is not the cutest jumper ever," she ranted.

I blinked for a moment, surprised at how seriously she was taking this 'fashion crisis' and a little angry for making me worry. Looking down at the jumper, I didn't really see what she was talking about; it was a simple, woolen, grey jumper. I would happily wear it. In fact, I used to own one before I lost... Oh.

"Um... Sel? Remember our trip to H&M for our back to school clothes when you wanted me to get warmer winter clothes so I wouldn't have to borrow your jacket all the time?" I asked her.

She squinted a little, her forehead scrunched with concentration before realisation dawned on her and her mouth shrunk into a little 'o'. Sel made a move as though she was going to give it to me before I stopped her.

"It's okay, just give it to me after school." She nodded meekly as I waved goodbye. I shut my locker and readied myself for my next class.

History. Mr Meyers. Fynn. I couldn't believe I was actually excited to go to history.

I was also a little disappointed in myself, just not enough to stop grinning.
