Platinum Heart

Winter Rose Ridland has always been rich. She's used to the maids cleaning for her, the butlers fetching her food, the kids at school bowing down before her, and the constant spending money--but what she isn't used to is surprise road trips. When her dad decides that it's time to send her to boarding school, the family packs up and leaves. What they weren't expecting was a freak car accident, and what Winter wasn't expecting was to survive--and more importantly, she wasn't expecting herself to be found. Will she find a way back to her old life, or will the boy who saves her show her a different one? © 2013 by beliebervision. All Rights Reserved.

11. 11: Unexpected Surprise

"You kids look cold," Cathryn says as Justin and I walk into the kitchen. I managed to shake all the snow off me when we were in the front hallway, but I guess Justin didn't because there's snow all around him. I try not to laugh but I end up doing it anyway.

"Yeah well I'm freezing," Justin says. "Do you mind if I go get some clothes?"

"I don't mind," Cathryn looks back at me. "Why don't you ask your friend?"

I immediately look down at my feet. I don't know why I suddenly feel insecure being known as Justin Bieber's friend, but I do. I feel him touch my arm lightly and I look up again to see Justin smiling again. I can't help but smile as well.

"Do you want to come with me?" he asks. I nod. "Okay, let's go then." he grabs my wrist and starts to drag me out of the room but Cathryn stops him.

"Hey, Justin," she yells.

"What?" he yells back.

"Why don't you just grab everything and you and your friend can stay here for the two weeks that you have?"

I can almost swear that I saw Justin roll his eyes but it must have happened too quickly.

"Okay!" he says, and then drags me out the front door. Once outside, he lets go of my wrist and we start to walk. I wrap my arms around myself so I don't feel as cold as before, but Justin notices and offers his sweatshirt to me.

"No, I'm good." I say and turn my gaze ahead of me. "Are we going to the place you had me at when I was unconscious?"

"Yeah," he says, looking at me. "Are you sure you don't want it? You look cold."

As I shiver again, I hold out my hand to stop him from giving the sweatshirt to me. "Justin I'm fine."

He stops walking and gives me a look. I raise my eyebrows and we stand there for a moment until Justin, being the person that he is, finds a way to slip the sweatshirt over my shoulders, despite my various protests. As we start to walk again I realize how much warmer I actually am and I thank him.

"Hey, no problem." he smirks. "I told you."

I roll my eyes. "Whatever."

We walk in silence until we reach the small house that Justin had been living in. He hands me a pile of clothes and then takes the rest of them himself. I'm also handed the small stack of money that I noticed the first night I was there. Now, I notice that the whole stack is one hundred dollar bills.

"This is a lot of money for someone who doesn't like money." I say.

Justin rolls his eyes. "I need money to survive."

"Not necessarily."

He looks at me for a moment. "Yeah, I guess you're right. Sorry."

"No need to apologize." I say as I walk out the door. Justin follows. "You're just attached to money in some way."

"I'm not attached," Justin says. "I'm just...not used to living without it now."

I nod. "I understand. I guess I'm not used to that either."

He looks at me sideways. "What do you mean?"

"I don't know." I shrug. "I'm used to having limos drive me everywhere, I'm used to living in a mansion, and I'm not used to having friends."

Justin smiles. "I guess you could say that we're the same. I'm just not used to having real friends."

I laugh and before I know it, we're standing in Cathryn's doorway. Justin freezes. I furrow my eyebrows and then turn my gaze to where he's looking.

There in front us stands a small woman with long brown hair. Her eyes show many years of hard work and determination, but the frown on her face shows disappointment. I can only figure that it's disappointment in Justin.

Justin swallows. "Hi mom."

Justin's mom folds her hands in front of her. "Hi honey."

"Uh," he says. I notice that he's at a loss for words, and I'm at a loss for words, so I set down the clothes and money by the door, take Justin's pile from his hands, and say,

"How about we go sit down or something?" Justin nods quickly and then drags me into the living room. His mom does not follow so I figure that she's waiting for a proper invitation.

"I don't want to talk to her." Justin says, his voice cracking with emotion. "Not after this long."

I stand there, not knowing what to say, when he wraps his arms around me. I'm still too shocked to move, but eventually I reach up and start to rub his back. I pull away and bring my arms down to my sides.

"Let's just try to make conversation." I say with a smile. "Okay?"

He nods, and then I go to get his mom.
