Enter the world of Tye. The Fall has devastated much of the world as we know it but Tye knows nothing else. He and his best friend Eeli are ready to leave their home as soon as they reach thirteen years so that they can be off on their own and be who they want to be and do what they want to do. At last.

Tye and Eeli could never have imagined how dangerous the real world was going to be.

42. 42

I run faster an further than I ever have before. I feel unstoppable, like I’ve got somefin huge powerin me that ain’t ever gonna stop. I’m liter than I was before. Better. Happy.

An I run, Nimmo at my side.

An I’m runnin an runnin.

We eat. Day turns into nite an we run.

We sleep. Dawn breaks. We run.

An run. An run.

Till I see someone comin in the distance.

I slow my pace to a jog an then a walk, stretchin my muscles that are growin each hour. As the figure grows closer I can see that it’s a man, a young man. I skwint into the distance. Talleren me. Orange hair.

He spots me an waves big. He calls somefink I can’t hear an Nimmo shoots over to him.

“Tye!” I catch at last. “Tye! Over here.”

It’s Phee.

I jog over to him, unsure what I’m supposed to say till I git there. He’s got this awkward embarrassed smile on his face an I find myself grabbin onto his teeshirt an pushin him back. I feel a storm of fire inside’a me that I ain’t ever felt before. There’s a jump of fear in my stomach as I push my face close to his. Cause if he’s here then where’s Eeli?

“What the hell are you doin here?” I spit at him.

He goes white an raises his hands up in surrender. He tries to speak but it comes out as a squeak. “Eeli told me to leave, so I left.”

“What?” I feel my eyebrows come together. “That’s stoopid, she wouldn’t tell you to leave. I left so you could stay. How could you walk out on her?”

“I swear! She told me to leave.”

“Why? Why would she do that? She liked you. I know her inside out, she liked you.”

“But not enuff.”

“Let go’a me an we’ll talk.”

“Oh.” I unclench my fist an take a step back. “I’m sorry.”

He sighs an sits hisself down on an old car. I lean up against a post, watchin him.

“You left, Tye, an it changed everyfin.”

“I left so she dint have to choose you over me. I knew how she felt about you. I weren’t about to make her feel bad about her dream. I would never do that.”

“You made everyfin worse.”

“Hey! I tried! I dint know what else to do, okay?”

“I know but when you left she realised what you mean to her.”

My heart grew twice it’s size an blocked my throat. “What . . . What d’ya mean?”

“She wouldn’t stop cryin.” He shook his head. “She couldn’t sleep. Wren got a little annoyed, actually. She’s weird, Tye, like no one I ever met before.”

“I don’t care about her, what about Eeli?”

“In the middle of the nite she crept into my room an woke me up.” He looks away before meetin my eyes. “She told me she’s bin stoopid fer all this time an she wishes she could run back an git you. She asked Wren but she said no.”

“What?” I take a step towards him.

“She wanted to race after you.”

“But . . . Why?”

“Yer her best friend!” He slams his hands down on the car an makes Nimmo jump. “Don’t you get it yet, dummy?”

“Git what?” I’m screamin at him but I don’t know why. “What is there to git? I fort I was doin good!”

“When you left you made her realise she dint know how to be wiffout you. She realised that she couldn’t live wiffout you. Yer all she’s ever wanted.”

I shake my head, shuttin out his words cause I don’t know what to do wiff em. There’s no room left in my head fer em cause I’m filled up wiff my own love fer her. Love I’m only just realisin I got. “That’s not true. She ain’t never said anyfink like that before.”

“She ain’t never kissed you before.” He pulls hisself up an huffs as he hits the ground. “How am I supposed to compete wiff you, Tye? You know everyfin about her. Stuff I can’t even dream of knowing.”

“I . . . Phee, I dunno what yer sayin.” I grab his arm as he goes to pass me. “Please. Don’t go.”

“I left cause she’d never pick anyone over you. Not in a million years.” He tries to shrug me off but I just cling on titer. “She told me to leave, Tye. She picked you.”

I search his eyes an he stares rite back at me.

“If it weren’t fer Wren Eeli’d be here wiff us rite now.”

“But she wouldn’t run away from her mother. Her whole life she’s talked about her an her song. I can’t believe she’d run out here after me.” I’m skweezin his arm tite, pleadin. I dunno what to fink. I dunno what to believe no more.

“I can’t believe you don’t git it.” He’s narrowed his eyes, glarin at me.

“Git what?”

“She picked you. No one can beat you. Not even Wren.”

I shake my head. I can’t believe it. I just can’t.

“She loves you.”

I drop my hand an stumble back.

“Yer stoopid, Tye.”

I have to wet my mowf before speakin. “So stoopid.”

“Of course she loves you. She always has. I just wish I dint have to git in the middle of it.”

I shake my head. “You was stoopid too, Phee.”

He larfs. “Yeah, I guess I was. Not as stoopid as her fer actually lettin you go.”

“I’m goin back fer her.” My purpose rushes back to me an my heart takes off, bouncin at the idea that I’m wastin time an Eeli don’t know that I love her too. An she’s gotta know. Wiff everyfin I got I care fer her. I don’t know how not to.

Phee lets a smile creep onto his face. “Good. You should. There ain’t no one else like her around.”

“Nope.” I’m smilin rite back. “There ain’t no one like my Eeli.”
