Enter the world of Tye. The Fall has devastated much of the world as we know it but Tye knows nothing else. He and his best friend Eeli are ready to leave their home as soon as they reach thirteen years so that they can be off on their own and be who they want to be and do what they want to do. At last.

Tye and Eeli could never have imagined how dangerous the real world was going to be.

39. 39

Nimmo’s nose nudges my hand an I groan. He licks me in the face an I pull myself up. I blink a coupl’a times as I heave myself to standin. There’s a red line that’s on the horizon that means it’s dawn. It must be my second dawn since leavin Camrose, unless I already slept thru one.

After sharin the food leftover from the Whites wiff Nimmo, I shift my rucksack on my back which’s left a wet sweat patch where I slept wiff it on an we head off. I don’t have it in me to run today. Even walkin’s pullin my muscles like I’m bendin em the wrong way.

“I’m sorry bout all the runnin, Nimmo.”

He wags his tail at the sound of his name.

“I just dint know what else to do. I had to git far enuff away that I wouldn’t change my mind an go back. This is fer the best.” I skweeze my hands tite together. “It is. It hurts but it’s good. She wants to sing an she wants to be wiff her mum an she wants to be wiff Phee. An I want . . .” I larf but it don’t sound like normal. “I want somefink else that’s not that.” I sigh. “I wanna figure out what that is.”

We walk on an on an I realise how quiet the world is wiffout a friend in it.

I don’t know when I start, maybe it’s the third fall of nite, but I start re-tellin Leon’s story. The great adventures of Nimmo. I can’t always concentrate an I keep havin to repeat myself but by the fifth dawn I got to where Leon got.

“No!” I scratch my head. Nimmo cocks his own at me. “There’s gotta be more! Maybe I’m just forgettin somefin? I gotta be.”

I fink of as many characters as I can an see if I’m forgettin someone’s past story. Leon told me em all, after all.

But I ain’t forgot a single one.

I’m at the bit before the fite, how can I not know how the rest of it goes? He must’a known how it was gonna end. How could he not tell me the end?

I look up an see the tops of houses an a few people. They all stop what they’re doin to watch us pass. Nimmo races to as many people as possibly try’na git as many scratches behind the ears as he can before I call him back to me.

Halfway down the street, I realise where I got to.
