Enter the world of Tye. The Fall has devastated much of the world as we know it but Tye knows nothing else. He and his best friend Eeli are ready to leave their home as soon as they reach thirteen years so that they can be off on their own and be who they want to be and do what they want to do. At last.

Tye and Eeli could never have imagined how dangerous the real world was going to be.

31. 31

I sleep about six different times, wakin up to find Eeli an Phee all curled up cozy together an all I’ve got is a face fulla Nimmo’s fluff. I wake first as I see a tiny fleck of lite in the distance an I jump up at once, stretchin my arms an legs. I don’t wayte fer em to git up all natural. I kick Phee in the leg hard an the force of it shakes Eeli too. We say goodbye to Nico, who’s the only one awake at first lite, thankin him fer his hospitality before I march us in the direkshon of Camrose. Eeli an Phee sing together all mornin an I wanna shove somefink in my ears.

Gittin a few paces ahead of em doesn’t seem to be enuff cause I can still hear em chortlin as tho the world is gonna hand em everyfink they want. My heart dances in my chest fer the whole day, poundin hard like a punch in the gut. I don’t eat much as my stomak is churnin too much an tensed fer war. I don’t say a word to em an neither of em notice.

I can’t wayte to git to Camrose.

Darkness starts to fall an a panic jumps from my belly to my head, touchin everyfink on the way up.

“Tye!” Eeli calls an skips to my side, takin my hand.

I snatch it back, stormin ahead.

“We ain’t stoppin.”

“Tye, it’s gittin dark. We gotta stop. We won’t be able to see what we’re doin.”

“We’re nearly there.”

She gits in front of me but I just push her aside an keep walkin.

“Tye, what the hell’s the matter wiff you?”

“We’re close. They said we was close. They said we could do it.”

“We’ll just git there tomorrow.”

“What if Wren Song’s not there tomorrow.” I’m gaspin fer breath. “What if this’s our last chance?”

Phee catches up to us. “What’s the sudden rush, Tye?”

I shake my head an take of, lettin my strides turn into a sprint, my heart already at the rite pace to steady me. Nimmo yaps an bounds along at my side.

“Tye!” I can hear them chasin after me an I let out a cry from my heart.

It’s gotta be just here, it’s gotta be. I can’t do this anymore. I can’t. It’s gotta be here. It’s gotta.

Tears are stingin an I kid myself that it’s just the cool wind irritatin them. I sniff em back down but I’m cryin an I can’t understand what’s happenin to me.

“Tye! Slow down!” Eeli’s shouts are gittin more desperate but I only pick up my pace. “Tye, come back! Please!

It has to be today. It has to be now. I can’t do this. I can’t. It’s gotta be close. Just outta site. People waitin to take us in. People who know. People who understand.

My footsteps are jarrin my whole body every time they touch the ground an my muscles are achin like they’re gonna fall off. How many footsteps till my legs give way? How long can I run for?

“Tye! Stoopid! Please!”

I shut my eyes an realise how tired I am.

I feel myself slowin.

Eeli’s so loud. The blood’s pulsin louder in my ears. My breath is louderern even that.

I drop to my nees and cover my head wiff my hands.

I can feel Eeli an Phee behind me but they don’t approach. I’d only push em away. I don’t want anyone to be close to me.

Not again.
