Enter the world of Tye. The Fall has devastated much of the world as we know it but Tye knows nothing else. He and his best friend Eeli are ready to leave their home as soon as they reach thirteen years so that they can be off on their own and be who they want to be and do what they want to do. At last.

Tye and Eeli could never have imagined how dangerous the real world was going to be.

24. 24

While the sound of gigglin an piano filled the house, me an Phee got shown old maps an these weird coins an pieces of paper that were money. I don’t understand how someone could trade you food fer a bit of crumpled paper.

I can’t help lookin outta the window, checkin the day as it passes outside.

We’re sittin in the livin room again as Annette an Lacey come grinnin into the room. They’ve changed into different dresses an have tied their hair back in some kinda weird pattern so it was flat against their heads apart from a few lose bits round their faces. I could only guess that the part I could see that came round one side an stopped before their waystes was the same at the back. I dint know people could make patterns outta hair. I dint know why you’d want to.

“Where’s Eeli?”

“Oh she’s coming.” Annette says.

The first thing I see is this little purple dress that ends way above her nees. It’s got little frills at the top an bottom an is tied around the wayste in black. It makes Eeli’s skin look wrong, all pale but red from the sun. She’s got her hair tied like Annette an Lacey’s but its messier so she musta done it herself. It ain’t as tite an practiced. She’s got way more bits round her face that haven’t got in. Eeli’s also finishes way past theirs. Hers goes all the way down to just above her hips.

She smiles so big an brite I can’t help but smile rite back at her. The breath’s taken rite outta my body an I can’t look away. All at once she looks as old as Art. She looks like a lady.

“Eeli.” Phee steps forward, mowf all agape. “You look incredible.”

“Thank you.” She says all clear, like she’s considerin every word.

I just watch her, a growin skweeze in my stomak makin me feel sick. Cause standin there like that ain’t my best friend no more.

“Tye?” She takes my hand an my heart sinks as I git a closer look at her. She’s got black round her eyes an red on her lips. She’s all clean an perfect. “What do you think?”

I shake my head.

Annette larfs an claps her hands together. “He’s speechless of course!”

“You look . . . weird.”

“Excuse me?” She pulls away, smile droppin to the ground.

“This ain’t you, Ee.”

She shakes her head. “Maybe I want it to be.”

She turns an flies up the stairs, the Whites givin each other looks that mean I’ve done somefink I shouldn’ta.

Phee punches me hard on the arm before dashin off to follow her. “What is wrong wiff you?”
