Enter the world of Tye. The Fall has devastated much of the world as we know it but Tye knows nothing else. He and his best friend Eeli are ready to leave their home as soon as they reach thirteen years so that they can be off on their own and be who they want to be and do what they want to do. At last.

Tye and Eeli could never have imagined how dangerous the real world was going to be.

21. 21

I wake in that same room, Nimmo curled on one side an Eeli on the other. I’m confused an sit up, lookin around. Nimmo watches me but settles down again. I go to the window an pull back the crusty curtains an it’s sunrise. Eeli stirs wiffout my shape an blinks open her eyes.

“You dint come back down last nite.”

“No, I guess I dint.” I look out the window again so I don’t have to face her.

I shrug. “I guess I fell asleep.”

“I waited up fer you.”

I turn an take her in, hair spillin all over the place, brite from all the sun its bin gittin. Her face is cloudy wiff sleep still but she ain’t half beautiful. No wunder Phee was lookin at her. I’d be lookin at her too.

“Tye, what’s wrong?”

“Yer lyin.”

I shuffle my feet an say nuffink.

“I waited fer hours but you dint come down.”

“Like I said, I was asleep.”

“I came to look fer you after forever an you was all curled up wiff Nimmo.”

“Did you sleep up here then?”

“Course I did.” She pulls her rucksack towards her to look fer somefink.

“You left Phee down there all on his own?”

“I wasn’t gonna leave you up here was I? Anyway, Phee fell asleep in moments after I stopped talkin.”

“What did you talk about?”

“I dunno. This an that.”

I nod. “But you came up here wiff me?”

“Tye, what’s wrong wiff you?” She grabs my hand. “Of course I did. An I dint want to leave our stuff wiff Phee anyway. What’ve you bin finkin? I don’t like it.”

“Nuffink. It’s nuffink.” I shake my head. “You don’t trust Phee?”

“Not yet I don’t. We only known him a day.”

“You trusted Jax.”

“He was savin yer life.”

I look down at my hand, only a scab runnin across my skin now.

“Anyway, Jax had responsibilities.” She jumps up. “He had a house an a life to look after, he weren’t gonna throw that away. What does Phee have? Nuffink.”

“Now he’s got us. He ain’t gonna wanna leave.”

Eeli bites her lip. “I guess we’ll figure it out when it comes to it. We’ll let him tag along fer now. Can’t send him on his way.”

“Why not?”

“He’ll go crazy bein alone. We’re not those kinda people, Tye.”

I nod. “Yer rite. Okay. We’ll let him tag along.”

“You don’t like him do ya?”

“No. But I dunno why.”

We head downstairs and Nimmo rushes to jump on Phee, who’s all tangled in blankets. Nimmo licks him in the face an gives a yap. Phee shoots up, eyes wide wiff shock.

Eeli giggles from the doorframe. “Mornin. If you don’t mind we’d like to make some progress today, Mr Gide. How many days did you say Camrose was from here?”

He puts his head in his hands an groans. “Four or five. Somefink like that.”

“Great. We’re leavin in a mo an you better be ready.”

Eeli grabs my hand an tows me out the house, Nimmo’s on our heels.

“You still ain’t told me what’s wrong.” She drops her hand.

“I told you it was nuffink.”

“An I know yer lyin. It’s somefink about Phee ain’t it?”

“I already told ya, I don’t like him.”

She crosses her arms. “There’s more.”

I shake my head. “There ain’t. Their really ain’t.”

“I don’t believe you, stoopid.”

Phee crashes thru the door, orange hair all askew. “Rite, let’s go then.”

We walk, growin hungry before midday but tryin to hold off best we can.

“So you recognise this stuff?” I ask Phee. “You know where we are an what direkshon to head in?”

“Course I do. Easy.”

“We’re puttin all our faith in you.”

“I know.”

“If you mess it up it ain’t gonna end well.”

“Tye, it’s fine. We’re friends. Ain’t we, Ee?”

I clamp my teeth together an watch her face go red.

She nods. “Yeah. We’re all friends here.”

I pull her aside by her rucksack an Phee bends down to tie his boot up tighter.

“Just talked about this an that did ya?”

She nods. “Yes, Tye. What’s wrong wiff you?”

“I don’t like the way he looks at you, okay?”

“What?” She takes a step back. “Like how?”

“He’s all lookin at you an smilin at you an being charmin.”

“An what’s wrong wiff that?”

“I fink he likes you, Eeli, an I don’t like it.”

“Well tough, it don’t matter.”

“O’course it matters!”

“Why? Just cause you don’t like it. I dint like it when you was droolin over Luce but I dint shout at you.”

“You did.”

She shook her head. “That weren’t about you, Tye. That was about me realisin my future weren’t gonna be what I pictured. I fink you need to realise the same fing.” She storms off to Phee’s side an he gives her this smile an my stomak pulls an swishes an I feel like I need to lie down an shut my eyes from everyfin but instead I pick up my pace so I’m ahead.

At least Nimmo’s next to me, on my side.

I can’t bear to look at them.
