The Mermaid Project

Hi my name is Kai.
I am 16 years old.
I was selected for the mermaid project.
It sounded exciting at first, but now...I don't know who I am.

9. Dr. Sidonikov

When I ran into the training room, I could tell I was late. Everyone was standing in line when I had run in. Everyone began to stare at me. My face turned red and I turned away to face the front. Infront of us was a familiar face. It was Dr. Sidonikov.
"Everyone, this is our new subject. Her name is Kai Blue." He said plainly. His voice was deep and sweet. The room was filled with a bunch of "Hey Kai"s. I gave a small wave a turned back to face Dr. sidonikov.
"Welcome to the Mermaid Project." He said to me and smiled. It was the first time he had really actually looked at me. He looked intenly studying my features. I stared into his baby blue eyes. They seemed to never end.
"Um.." He said. I could tell I was destracting him. I guess the moment got too long because a boy said.
"Doc, you were saying?" He seemed to snap out of a trance and turn to face the others.
"Right. Numbers 1, 2, 3, you will have your exams today with Dr. Smaler. Numbers 4, 5, 6, you will have training time for your breathing exams in a week and number 7, you will work with me privatly today in the smaller training room." He said. Everyone kind of despersed into their tasks. Dr. Sidonikov walked over to me.
"Follow me." He said. He lead me to a smaller room with a pool.
"Can I call you Kai?" He asked.
"Of course Dr. Sid-." I began to say
"Call me Jessie." He interupted turning around to smile at me. Jessie, such a beatiful name.
"Does everyone call you that?" I was expecting a yes when he said.
"No, just you." He said. I was surprised. Why me?

When we finally reached the pool he told me to swim some laps. He then told me not to breathe I swam lap after lap without a breath. I was panting and my face was red within a matter of minutes.
"Get out of the water." He said. I swam over to the ladder and climbed out. He had been sitting in a chair the whole time watching me as I swam. I stood infront of him.
"Sing." He ordered.
"What?" I asked shocked.
"Sing." I didn't know what to sing. I heart started beating fast. I didn't even consider myself that good of a singer. I decided to sing one of my favorite songs. I began.
"I don't know but I think I maybe
Fallin' for you dropping so quickly
Maybe I should keep this to myself--"
"Stop" he interupted. I saw him get out of his seat he walked behind me. I kept facing the empty chair. I felt his warm breath on the back of my neck. He slowly placed one hand on my chest where my lungs are. It fealt strange and I became tense. He put another hand on my stomach.
"Breathe" he wispered. I began to breathe lightly my shoulders moving up and down.
"No. Let your stomach fill up when you breathe in and then let it out when you breathe out. Don't move your shoulders." He said in a soft kind voice. I tried again. I turned around to face him and our eyes locked. There was a feeling running between the little space there was left between our faces. He started leaning his head closer to me making the space smaller when suddenly a guard walked in. We pulled apart as quickly as we could.
"And that's how you have to breathe." He explained in a loud voice trying to act like nothing happened for the guard.
