In Perfect Harmony

Grace Masciale is a young waitress trying to get by on her meager salary in busy NYC. Her true passion is music, so she works hard playing open mics and doing whatever possible to "make it" as a musician. When Grace meets Liam Payne, she is thrown into a life in the spotlight. Can she manage a relationship with Liam, while attempting to follow her own dreams?

31. Wow

Grace's POV

I stood up, grabbed my water bottle, and began dancing around the room anxiously.

"Grace! Relax!" Liam interrupted, stopping me in my tracks.

"Sorry, Li, it's just... Aghhh!" I couldn't even formulate my emotions into words.

"I know you're nervous and excited, but save some energy for the stage!"

"I know..."

Just then, Nikki and Stephanie came bustling into the room.

"Final check!" Nikki grinned, adjusting my dress as Stephanie powdered my nose and gave my hair one last spritz of hairspray.

Steph finished and took a step back. "You're all set! Now go knock 'em dead!"

"Thanks guys," I smiled, though on the inside my stomach was in three gazillion knots. Liam took my hand and led me down the hall until we reached the doorway to the wing of the stage. I looked up at him as he began talking.

"Grace Katherine Masciale, go out there and show everyone what you're made of! Just relax and have fun. I know you can do this." He took my hand and gave it a squeeze.

"Ok, Li, I will," I giggled. I was nervous, but I was ready.

"Grace, you ready?" The crew member called from the wing. I could hear the house music starting to fade. The chatter coming from the crowd was unbelievable; for the 250 people that were there, there was a ton of shouting and screaming going on.

"Yup!" I looked back at Liam and took a deep breath.

"You got this." He gave me a kiss on the lips that calmed me instantly.

"Thank you." I smiled as I walked away from Liam, into the wing. I was handed my guitar, and I slipped the strap over my head. I glanced back at him one last time.

"Wait!" He exclaimed, hurrying to get something out of his pocket.

"What?" Of all times to tell me to hold on.

"I want to," he started as he unlocked his phone, "I want to get a picture of this. Your first show."

"Liam!" I rolled my eyes at his cuteness.

"Just stay still. Smile!"

I grinned, posing with my guitar.

"Got it! Now go smash it!"

Someone in the audience started a chant. Before long, the entire room was chanting my name. What?! This was so crazy. Every part of this was so crazy.

"Alrighty, here I go."

I walked onstage. My heart beat out of my chest, and I could feel the adrenaline pulsing through my veins. Being on stage made me feel alive in a way nothing else could.

The crowd was deafening. It sounded mostly like "WAHHHHHH" with a couple other random shouts thrown in.

"Hi guys," I said as I reached the microphone. "Thank you so much for having me today! So as you may know, my name is Grace-"

"And I'm here to play for you."

I strummed my guitar. "Are you guys ready to jam?"

The shouts and screams told me the answer.

"Alrighty, then. If you saw my Twitcam that I did with Liam-"
All of the fans went berserk when I said his name "-Then you might know this song. If not, I think you'll catch on pretty quickly. This one's called Without You."

I started strumming and getting into it. The words just tumbled out of my mouth effortlessly as I began to sing.

"Every day that we hang out
You spend the whole time on the phone
But when I try to get up and go
You complain that I'm leaving you alone..."

"Everybody now! I'm So! Much! Better! Off! Without you!"

I finished the song and the screaming and applause was crazy. I had done it. My first song performed in front of a crowd like this. Wow.

I grinned as I took a sip from a water bottle that had been set out for me.

"You guys like that?" I spoke into the mic. "I wrote it a while back when I was really mad about a break-up. This next song is something you all probably know..."

I launched into Love Song by Sara Bareilles. Everyone seemed to know the words and sang along; it was great. Then, I shook it up a little and performed my version of Hallelujah. The words were so moving and there was so many emotions being expressed that I literally almost brought myself to tears. My dream had always been to perform it for charity or something, with a big gospel choir and lots of riffs and cool stuff like that. I wasn't there yet, but it was a step in the right direction.

As I recovered from the goosebumps that had taken over my body, I started to talk to the fans. "I know you all know Liam, but I don't think you know a lot about me."

The crowd cheered in response.

"So, I want to give you a chance to ask me some questions." I took the microphone off its stand and held it as I continued to talk. This was a totally spontaneous thing that I hoped I wouldn't get in trouble with Leah for.

"I've got no real organized system for this, so I guess we're just going to have to be civilized..." I really hadn't thought this through. Lucky for me security guards were stationed throughout the room and one took an extra microphone from the stage. There was only about 250 people, so I didn't think it would be too disastrous.

"Okay, so who wants to ask the first question?"

Everyone went nuts. "How about you?" I pointed to a girl in the second or third row, who looked to be about 17.

"Hiiiiiiii! I wanted to know, how did you meet Liam?"

My stomach did a little flip as I thought about my boyfriend.

"That's a good one. I was playing in a coffee shop, and Liam happened to walk in and see me," I shrugged, a smile tugging at the corners of my mouth. "We got to talking, and he ended up asking me out." There was a lot more to the story, but I could only share so much before the album was announced.

The crowd went cra-zy. Literally.

"Who else has something to ask me? How about... You, in the blue t-shirt?"

The blonde girl was around my age, give or take a year or two.

"How old are you and where are you from?"

Right. They really did know nothing about me.

"I'm twenty-two," I smiled. "And I'm from upstate New York."

There was cheering and yelling. I glanced up and saw Leah in the back of the room, tapping her watch. Oops. I had to hurry it up.

"Alright guys, unfortunately I only have time for one last question." Hands shot up and the screaming intensified.

"You, in the back, in the pink top," I pointed to a girl who was somewhat calm in this madness.

She blushed as she took the microphone. "Were you a Directioner before you met Liam?"

I felt my cheeks go red too. "I was. And I'm not just saying that. In fact, I don't think Liam and the boys even realize how hardcore of a fan I was, and still am. I had the twitter accounts, the posters, all that stuff," I grinned.

The audience cheered louder than I had heard all afternoon.

"Sorry to cut the questions short, but I've got to get back to the music so we have time for that meet and greet." I put my mic back on its stand and positioned my guitar.

"You guys ready? This is another kinda slow one, but it's always been one of my favorites. Here's Skinny Love." Everyone screamed and cheered. It was definitely a popular song.

"C'mon, skinny love
Just last the year..."

I loved the chorus the most; there was just something about the melody that was so relaxing yet powerful at the same time.

"Thank you," I smiled after I finished. "I can't even put into words how grateful I am for your support. I've got a few songs left, these are all originals. I hope you like them."

First I played Boy Next Door, then Sixteen. They were both quieter songs, so I then kicked it up a notch and did Seventeen. Both tunes were titled after an age, but had completely different themes.

"I wrote Seventeen when, you can guess, I was around seventeen. My friend had her first boyfriend and she wanted to grow up really fast. So this is a bit of a rant about my frustrations, plus kinda a message that you have to enjoy being young while you are."

"You cancelled our plans again last night

Because he came home for the weekend

I never used to mind

but this is a reoccuring trend...

You've got an absence of balance and I know it's a challenge

but you need to figure it out

You've got your whole life planned out

at seventeen..."

I played a couple more originals, which seemed to go pretty well. Just standing on this stage was so exhilarating.

"Thank you guys so much for today! Never stop being amazing!"

The crowd yelled and hollered. They didn't want me to go-seriously?! All this was just too much. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Katie walking onstage, camera in hand.

"Can I get a photo of you with the crowd?"

"Sure! Before I leave, everybody smile for my amazing photographer!"

I turned so the audience was behind me, and Katie snapped the pic.

"Great! Thanks guys!" She waved as she hurried off.

"It's time for me to go. But we're not done yet! The meet and greet will start in just a few minutes. I can't wait to meet you all!"
I blew a kiss and waved as I ran off the stage.

The first person I saw was Liam. I sprinted over and fell into his arms.

Liam's POV

I held my breath as Grace walked onstage. When she stepped up to the mic, her shoulders seemed to relax and her anxiety seemed to disappear.

I couldn't take my eyes off of her. She was mesmerizing; the way she openly explained her inspiration for each song, her smile and laughter, the way her eyes lit up as she sang. It was evident she loved being on the stage. When she started her impromptu Q and A session, I had to laugh at her responses.

"I don't think Liam and the boys even realize how hardcore of a fan I was, and still am. I had the twitter accounts, the posters, all that stuff."

Hardcore Directioner? She definitely had never told me that. Well, yeah... There were a LOT of 1D lyric references in our day-to-day...

And with every song she played, her smile only got bigger and bigger. She was having the time of her life. As she finished the last song and waved goodbye to everyone, I could tell she really didn't want to go, but as she saw me, she hurried off the stage and into my arms.

Grace's POV

When I reached Liam I threw my arms around him and held him tight, and he did the same.

"You were incredible, babe!"

"Thank you, Li, thank you." I was so overwhelmed by everything.
After a minute he released me, and looked me in the eyes. I couldn't wipe the grin off my face. He was smiling, too.

"I'm so proud of you." He pulled me close again and put his lips to mine. His fingers rubbed softly against my cheek, and I completely melted into him. Only seconds later, I felt a tap on my shoulder, and reluctantly pulled away from Liam to see who it was.
There stood Leah, beaming.

"Grace, that was great!" She gave me a quick hug. "Before you get too comfortable, though, we've got your family and 300 girls out there waiting for you."
She motioned for me to follow her.

"Ahh! Right!" I looked at Liam. "We'll have to continue this later."

He winked flirtatiously back at me.

"Liam!" I giggled as I was led away.

Within fifteen seconds I was back in my dressing room.

My family greeted me with the most amazing expressions ever. There was cheering and applause as I walked in the room. I could tell my grandparents and my mom had been crying and my dad's eyes seemed a little red too.

"Absolutely fantastic," Grandma said, planting a kiss on my cheek and giving me a hug. "We're so proud of you."

"Yes," Grandpa piped in. "Grace, you were absolutely incredible."

"Thank you so much. I've said it so many times but I can't say it enough!"

"We know you're grateful, Grace," Mom spoke up. The way her eyes lit up said it all.  I hugged my grandparents, my sister, and brother, and my mom, who all congratulated me on all of my hard work. When it came time to hug my dad, he held me close and whispered in my ear, "I knew you could do it. Who's better than you?"

"Nobody," I half-cried, half-laughed. There were just too many emotions to handle.

"We better let you get ready. I know you have fans waiting for you outside," my mom told me, giving me one last hug. "But just know that no matter how dedicated those fangirls think they are, we will always be your biggest fans."

"Thanks," I grinned. "I'll keep that in mind." I was so blessed to be surrounded by so many supportive people.

Everyone said their goodbyes, and soon it was just me, my makeup artist, and my stylist left in the room. As much as I was used to living independently, it was still hard to watch my family leave.

"Grace! That was phenomenal!" Nikki squeaked, knocking me out of my daze.

"You're so talented," Steph added, smiling.

"Thank you guys! For everything you've done," I replied. It wasn't until I felt tear drops on my cheeks that I realized I was crying.

"Noooo!" Stephanie exclaimed, dashing over to the counter to grab tissues. She ran back over to me and began blotting my face. "Your makeup is starting to run. And you have two minutes to become camera-ready!"

I laughed through my tears as Steph attacked my face with powders and blush and mascara and eyeliner, while Nikki smoothed out my dress and made sure I looked alright.

"Done!" Stephanie said, thirty seconds later. "Go make those girls' dreams come true!"

I turned to the door just as Leah came barging in. "You ready?"

I nodded.

"Then let's go!"

She guided me down the hall and opened a door to a room with murals painted on the walls. Katie had her camera equipment set up in one area, implying that that was our meet and greet spot.

"Stand here and you know, just act nice. Smile and take a picture with each fan. There's really no time for chit-chat."

"Okay," I nodded in reply.

Leah reached for a walkie-talkie on her belt. "Is everyone in a decent line?"

"Yes, all set," came the scratchy reply from the other end.

"Good. We are ready to open the doors," she replied, looking around to ensure that everyone, including security, was in place.

She smiled at me. "Be good."

As she spoke, the double doors from the main room opened, and in came a stream of 300 excited fans, mostly teenage girls, led by several security personnel.

The first girl was allowed to come up to me.

"Hi," I greeted her cheerfully.

"Hi," she squeaked in reply.

"Let's smile for the camera!" I stood next to her and grinned as Katie snapped the pic.

The girl hurried away, and was followed by two more female fans, about my age.

"Oh my gosh Grace! You and Liam are perfect together," one gushed.

"I can't believe we're meeting you!" The other squealed.

"Thank you do much! It's great to meet you guys." We grinned for the photo and they were off.

This continued on for a while, saying hi, pictures, Next! It was nice to meet everyone, but I felt bad we couldn't talk for longer.

"This is for you," a tall, blonde girl said as she handed me a drawing of myself.

"Oh my gosh! Thank you!" I replied, then whispered in her ear, "This is the first fan art I've ever recieved! I love it!"

She couldn't control her excitement! "OMG I'm so glad! You are super talented and Liam is lucky to have you."

"Thank you!" I smiled as we took the picture. I really wished I didn't have to be this rushed.

People were so nice; there were drawings and cards and lots of hugs. But what I loved more than the gifts and signs of affection were the sweet things the fans said.

As the line was dwindling down to the last fifty or so people, a fan walked up to me, beaming.

"Hi," I grinned at her.

"Hi! Can I have a hug?"

"Of course!"

As I wrapped my arms around her, she whispered in my ear, "Thank you so much for being such a role model to me."

I guess I looked at her kind of funny, because she continued, "I don't feel beautiful. I'm bigger than other girls and I don't really fit in. But you show me that it's ok to be different."

I was so touched by what this girl was saying. "Thank you. You are gorgeous, love. Don't ever let anyone make you think otherwise."

"Thank you," she replied, tears starting to form in the corner of her eyes.

"We better take the picture before you get in trouble," I smiled. And with a click of the camera and a wave, she was gone.

As the last fan stood with me in front of Katie, I struggled to smile. Not that I didn't want to; after over 200 photos I just couldn't feel my mouth anymore. Distracted by the giggling girls leaving the venue, I jumped as I felt someone's hands on my shoulders.

I spun around lightning-fast to see my favorite guy. "Liam!"
I threw my arms around him. His strong arms wrapped around my torso and held me tight. "You were flipping amazing. The show, the meet and greet. You were so good with the fans."

"Does that mean you were watching?" I chuckled.

"Eh... Maybe," he grinned.

"Well, thank you. I only learn from the best."

"Who, me? I know I am," he teased. "No, really, though, you're amazing." He leaned down and kissed me on the lips.

"I just can't believe this is real life! Holy cannoli."

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I've updated! I'm so sorry!

Anyways, I hope you like the CONCERT CHAPTER! AT LAST!! haha

I have a link to Grace (aka me) singing Hallelujah at my school talent show, so you can get a feel for what she sounds like. My friend is playing guitar for me in the clip :) I know I promised I'd post an original song... they're still a work in progress so bear with me lol. I'm not sure how to post the clip on here… anyone have any suggestions? For now, if you find me on Twitter (@kathgracemusic) I can tweet it to you.

Let me know what you think of the chapter!

The next few chapters will start the real drama... I don't want to give anything away but it'll be good!

Thank you for reading!
