Wings Are Made to Fly

Hi! My name is Imogen, and I am 17 years old. I'm an average college schoolgirl whose life got turned around, when my mum's last words led me to becoming a fifth member of Little Mix

2. Part 2

The music is playing, and I hold the microphone. There are thousands of eyes watching me. But they don't matter. All that matters now is me and my dream...

When I got home I could tell something was wrong. Mum and Dad and my brother Kevin, who has just finished at university, were all sat there, quiet. "What's the matter?" I said. "Mum? Dad? Kev?"

"Imogen, darling?" Mum said. "I don't want you to be upset."

"Why, what's happened?" I asked, my voice slowly rising. My brain was turning to soup, and I was panicking. I looked around. Brad, our cat, was perfectly fine, curled up on the sofa. There was practically nothing else important but my family.

"Your mum has been very worried," Dad said. "She had a lump on her arm, and when she went for it to be checked out..." Dad gulped. "You see the thing is, Mum has got cancer." I think I a really having a panic attack now. My mum means everything to me. She can't have cancer. My Granddad had cancer and he died. My uncle had cancer and he died. What if Mum died?

"Darling, don't worry. We've already started my Chemotherapy."

"You've known for a long time and you didn't tell me? I hate you! I hate you all!" I ran up to my room in tears. I didn't hate them. I especially loved Mum. But I couldn't believe they kept a secret as big as that away from me.

I didn't speak to any of my family for days. When I did, I said, "Why did you not tell me?"

"Because I knew you'd be this sad," Mum said. "I didn't want to worry you."

"Mum... Mum, you're not going to die are you?"

"I don't know, sweetheart. But I do know that I will try to stay alive for your sake." And I knew that she would. It was horrible when her hair fell out. I went to the hairdressers and had my waist-length hair cut jaw-length, so that my mum could have a wig. I am glad I did that, even now. I love my mum so much. If it wasn't for her I wouldn't be where I am today.
