On the Death of a Friend

Some years ago a friend, shortly before his death, was reminiscing about his childhood in Wales in the 1920's.

1. On the Death of a Friend

Barefoot running down the hill to the sea

Do all

Down to the sea and the gulls and the sand

The memories go?

The memories that cram

The convolutions of the mind

And build the man.

Feet firm, casting over the rocks to the sea

Do all

Over the rocks through the wind to the waves

The memories go?

I have a memory or two

And so a part of you

Will not die

Yet a while
