Different from the Rest

Kady used to have a normal life. She loved to shop, listen to music, and play field hockey, she was on the reserve list for the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She was even lucky enough to meet One Direction at one of their concerts and she kept in touch with them. Liam and Kady developed feelings for each other and started casually dating. That was until Kady discovered she had a life-threatening sickness. She was in the hospital for months, but overcame the sickness. But, the illness left her with a learning disability and now all her dreams are shattered and she has to rebuild her life. She must go from black to white but must learn there are shades of grey in the middle which are needed for healing.

7. Samara

Her chubby legs clumsily walk into my room after I unlocked the door. Strange grunting sounds escape from her mouth as she moves closer to my bed and her curls in her hair bounce up and down. Her blue eyes stare into mine wanting me to lift her up. I do as she wants and I plop her on the bed. She takes my iPhone from my clutch and turns it on.
"Uncle NiNi?" she asks once she sees my texts. That's what she calls Niall, she's only a year and a half old.
"Yeah, Samara," I say. My little sister grabs my leg, "Can we see Uncle NiNi?"
I shake my head and she drops the phone. Samara gives me a long and meaningful look, Niall was her favorite and I took him away from her. I'm messing up her life, but I can't help it. I sigh as Samara picks up the phone again and starts to play Doodle Jump.
"I'll be right back, okay?" I say. She nods with a cherubic look on her face. I just need one moment of silence from her. I walk down the stairs to the kitchen and I fix myself a bowl of grapes and apple juice for Samara. I look at the picture of my dad on the wall. He's in his army uniform with his signature smile on his face. It's one of those smiles that makes you want to just run to him and never leave his side. He left for Afghanistan about two and a half years ago. Before he left, he got my mom pregnant with Samara. Samara's never met her father. After a year at war, he was playing with Afghan children in a local village. The kids and parents knew he wasn't going to hurt them, so they didn't hurt him. Then an Afghan man, possibly linked to a terrorist group, shot my father twice in the head and killed him. That picture hangs up in our family room to remind us of him and we to always stick up for what you believe in, that was how he passed away. I walk back to my room where I see Samara talking on the phone.
"Bye-bye," she says. Once she sees me in the doorway, she freezes and a smile spreads on her lips.
"Samara Rachel B-Brown, what …did you …do?!" I demanded with fire in my voice.
"No, just talk to Uncle NiNi, he come in ten minutes," she says. What the hell was she thinking? We don't talk to Uncle NiNi for a reason and Samara just doesn't listen! I take the phone from her hands and she starts to bawl. I ignore her and I dial Niall's number.
"Hey Samara I'm coming, I'll leave my hotel room in a few minutes love," Niall says so calmly, it almost scares me.
"D-don't come, Samara took…my phone, it's okay r-really," I say, trying so hard not to stutter. There was a pause on the other end, Niall was trying to find out what to say.
"Oh, hey Kady. Look I'm in my car on my way over, why don't I just babysit Samara for a little while?"
"I know you're not in your c-car right now, but …fine come over and …who is in the car that …is not moving now with …you?" I ask. I know it's not worth trying to argue with Niall, he always gets his way. After a long pause he replies, "Liam."
Niall hangs up. Oh shit. I shake my head at Samara who is hiding in the pillows. You got away with this one I think as I put a handful of grapes into my mouth. I give Samara her juice and she takes a greedy sip of it.
"Kady, I'll be gone for the night so look after Samara until five tomorrow," Mom yells up to me.
"Fine," I say rolling my eyes. I have stopped asking why she leaves. Sometimes for business, sometimes for dates that never work out. I hear the side door open and close, then the start of her car's engine as she drives off.
"What do …you want for dinner, you idiot …of a child?" I whisper to Samara. She shrugs. Mac and cheese it is. She picks up my old field hockey stick and examines it. She runs the blue wood between her short fingers.
"It's all… yours," I say, I forgot my stick was even there and it's not like I'll ever play the sport again. I toss my phone onto my bed and I go downstairs to prepare the Mac and cheese. When I'm scooping the gooey mess into bowls, one for me and one for Samara, the doorbell rings. Samara goes flying down the stairs, field hockey stick in hand, to greet the boys waiting outside. She opens the door with a loud bang when it hits the wall. I don't even bother to yell at her, it'll be a long night. 'Cause when "Uncle NiNi" comes over for a "few minutes" it turns out to be a sleepover.
"Uncle NiNi! Li!" Samara yells. I can see out of the corner of my eye Samara hugging Niall, then Liam picking her up and swinging her around in a circle. I smile, I haven't seen her this happy in a long time.
"What's cooking?" Niall asks Samara, bending down so they see eye to eye.
"Mac and cheeeeeeese!" she yells. She grabs both of their wrists and she leads them to the kitchen table. Obviously the boys were expecting dinner. Liam sits on her left and Niall on her right. I take out two extra bowls, a normal sized one for Liam and a large one for Niall since his apatite is huge. I scoop the extra food into the bowls and I bring them to the table. I sit down where everyone but me, is digging into their meals. The only seat is right between Niall and Liam, great.
"Where's your mom?" Liam asks me and right as I'm about to answer, Samara buts in, "She left and won't be back until five tomorrow."
Liam nods his head, "So it's just you two?"
I look up from my bowl and I nod. After what happened the last time I saw him, he's not exactly the person I really want to be talking to right now.
"Tell me a joke Uncle NiNi," Samara says to Niall.
Niall's face lights up more than it usually does, "Okay, why did the cow cross the road?"
"Why?" she asked all excited.
"Because he was stapled to the chicken!" Niall said then he made the lame joke-drum sound thing. Samara erupted into laughter.
"I forgot, how was Greg wedding?" she asked, her eyes huge and full of curiosity. Niall smiled, "You remembered, love! It was amazing, I was the best man."
Samara yawned, "NiNi I'm tired, tell me that now as a good-night story."
Niall nodded, stood up, and took her hand. He led her to her room. I forgot how good Niall was with kids. One sentence he said got the child's full attention. It was just me and Liam. It was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Liam broke the ice, "Please, this time will you listen to me? I know you don't want to trust me because you are tough. Bringing me here was Niall's idea and can I build your trust by starting off as friends?"
Ugh, Liam always knows what to say at the right times. It's so hard to say no to him.
"Fine, but …just friends," I agree. He smiles his closed mouth smile and brings me into a hug. This is why I loved Liam. We could hear Niall singing Stole My Heart quietly to Samara, trying to get her to sleep.
