62. Chapter 53

Carter's POV

"Guys... I can go to the bathroom, that is the one place you cant come with me," I defend. Niall and Louis were wanting to come to the bathroom with me. I knew they were trying to protect me but it was getting really annoying.

"What about Charlotte?" Niall asks. "What about her?" I raise my arms in surrender and annoyance. "C'mon," Louis pulls his arm, "We'll be late." he finishes.

"I promise, I 'll be there in a few," I smile and watch them cross the hall to the classroom. I don't see what the big deal is... I mean they're right across the hall.

I turn and go around the corner to the bathroom. I push open the door and of course with my luck, there stands Charlotte. She's positioned in front of the mirror re-applying lip gloss. I turn to leave but she's already seen me.

"Hey Carter," without looking at her I can sense the smirk that has come across her face.

"Carter?!" Avalon's voice echoes. I turn to face them. "I guess the boys really cant protect you here, now can they?" Charlotte slurs. Maybe they should have came in with me, even if it is the girls bathroom.

"Bitch." Avalon states and her punch lands on my stomach. I fall to the ground, the bruises and cuts were just beginning to heal and she made them worse. "How much did they pay you last night?!" Charlotte's smirk hasn't left and they walk around my helpless body.

"Yea, so was it like a threesome or did you just go with one?" Avalon's smirk was less painful to look at but still made the shivers run down my spine. I shook my head which, at the moment, was the only thing I could manage.

"Wait.." they weren't expecting me to speak up so when I do they stop and stare down at me. "What about the teachers, the boys, anyone? If we're all late, what will they think?!" I shock myself at how fast the words come out. It seems like their considering the thought.

"Fine." Charlotte states and kicks my gut one last time. I wince at the, now even worse, pain and watch Avalon follow her quickly out. I force myself up and stare into the mirror.

I lift up my Arizona Tea sweater shirt and look embarrassingly at the bones that poke out here and there, the scars, cuts, and bruises. "Ugly..." I sigh to myself and let the sweat shirt fall from my hands. "Ugly bitch," I say and exit the bathroom.

Niall's POV

"An explanation to your tardiness Mrs. James?" Mr. Morgan our English teacher asks as Carter silently shuts the door behind her. "Bathroom," she shrugs and takes the seat beside me.

"Always..." Mr. Morgan says under his breath but we can all hear. I look over at Carter and notice the way she holds her stomach tight with one hand.

"That will be a lunch detention Mrs. James," he says and lays a small, green slip on her desk. "I expect to hear from the librarian that you were present..." his words echo through the classroom and he takes his usual spot in front of the white board. She sighs and slips the pass into her binder.

Why don't I believe her?

Carter's POV

"Thank you..." I sigh and watch the librarian turn the corner to her desk. I look at the food in front of me and push it away. Again, I lay a hand over my stomach and sigh. I had been sighing a lot today....

"Hello detention buddy!" the deep Irish accent makes me smile and I turn to face Niall. "Hey," the smile disappears and he takes the seat beside me.

"So... How did you get here?" I face him and he lays a bag of food on the table. "Mrs. Briggs doesn't like me skipping class for Nandos," he laughs.

"Niall, you didn't have to,"  "I wanted to," he smiles and side-hugs me. "Thanks," I manage and he starts eating his food.

"Not hungry?" he asks in between bites. "Nah," I push the plate further away and take a sip of my sweet tea. "Carter... You need food," he pulls it back and sets it in front of me.

"I'm fine Niall." I say a little to harshly and he backs down. I cant help but feel bad. Niall was the hardest to stay mad at. He made these faces but didn't even realize it.

"Niall I'm sorry," I apologize but it sounds to fake and I turn back away.

"What really happened in the bathroom?" he asks the question I had prayed would never come up.

"Nothing..." I lie. But I'm a horrible liar and he can see right through it.

"Carter..." he pats my shoulder. "Well..." I attempt at coming up with a two second lie. "Girls get this thing once a month and I had..." he interrupted.

"Ok! Ok! Just please, I'm trying to eat!" he laughs and I smile at the fact that he believed that horrible lie. I guess I'm not that bad of a liar..
