Spirit of Wolf and Water

Cora is a normal 17 year old girl, she has a barn, and has her friends who have her back. Her father died three years ago and her and her mother dont spend very much time together anymore. But when a cougar attacks Cora and she is saved by a siren named Tuari, they go through the challenges of the water curse together. Even though Cora and Tuari live together and they know each other quite well, does Cora know Tuari well enough? Is Tuari all she says she is? Will Cora ever put the pieces of the mysterious attacks together or will it lead to a place she doesnt want to go?

34. Cora

It was finally summer, school was over and it was perfect weather. Kota and I have been hanging out all the time but sadly not out in the sun or water. I haven't had a swim or 'fed' in several months. Ive gotten so thin, my robs are too visible now, I barely have energy anymore and I can tell that Kota and my parents are worried. I still refuse to swim even in the pool just because I dont know what will happen. I know that Kota says he will be fine but I know that on some level that he is still afraid of me.

I made my way out to the pool on the roof to just sit in the sun and let the water mock me as it has done in months. As I drifted off in the warm sun and then heard my phone ring, expecting it to be Kota I looked and didnt recognize the number.

"Hello?" I answered my phone.

"Hey Cora" I raspy male voice answered me.

"Hi, who's this?" Still not being able to figure out who was on the other end.

"Its Leigh," A chucke, "Dont tell me you've forgotten who I am already."

Leigh. The memory of our kiss and swim flooded into my mind and a flutter in my stomach caught me by surprise.

"Oh my gosh Leigh." My breath caught a bit, "How are you?"

"Im good, hows my girl?"

My stomach jumped a bit and guilt flooded over me, "Im fine," I frowned, "Long time no speak what do you need?"

"Ouch. Sorry for not calling sooner, wolf stuff."

I nodded, "right."

A pause from the other end of the phone, "Well I'm in the neighbourhood and wondered if you wanted to get together."

My eyes widened, I knew Kota wouldn't like it but Leigh was supernatural like me and maybe he would know something I didnt. "Sure where are you?"

Leigh gave me the details of where he was and I slowly made my way to the car and to the forest by Lucton Bay, not far from the house. I parked along side the road, not seeing Leighs car anywhere. I shuffled along the trail and then heard something land on the ground behind me as I passed some large bolder's not far front he end of the trail.

"What took you so long?" A deep raspy voice said from behind me.

I turned around to find Leigh, tall with his dark hair and beautiful hazel eyes looking at me with a goofygrin across his face. I couldn't help but smile up at him.

"Sorry for making you wait." I giggled.

"What happened to you?" He said startling me and ruining the moment.

"Um.. excuse me?"

"You look horrible."

"What happened? Whats been going on?"

I looked down and just told him everything, about me getting sick, not swimming, refusing to feed, Kota. Everything.

"Wow." He nodded and looked away. "So you didnt wait for me huh?"

I shook my head and just walked to the beach not waiting for Leigh to follow me.

"Its not that I didnt wait, Kota was there and," I didnt know what to say. I like Kota, maybe even love him but something about Leigh was different and made it easier to connect with. "He took care of me and I love him."

Leigh laughed at me and gratefully dropped the subject.

"So whats with not eating or swimming?"

I sighed, "Im scared."

Leigh looked at me and gestured for us to sit in the sand, "Scared of what?"

"Me. I dont know what will happen if I swim or feed since its been so long."

He rubbed my back and pulled me into him, only a part of me wanting to reject it. But I stayed there as we stared at the tide.

"Do you know anything about Sirens?"

Letting go of me Leigh shrugged, "I dont know much, other than how you feed and survive."

I nodded, "Do you know anything I dont?"

"I know that if you dont swim or feed you'll die."

I sighed, "Yah I guessed that."

"Then stop being so stubborn and do something about it."

I leaned back and looked up at him, determined not to get lost in his gaze, "Its not that simple."

He shook is head,"Scared or not Cora you need to take care of yourself."

"Do you have to feed on people to survive?" I snapped.

"Once in a while. Not like you do though."

I felt my face go hot, "Im so sorry."

"Im just worried. Seeing you like this makes me want to stay. But I'm sure your boyfriend would hate that."

I laughed, "Yah he probably would. But if you stayed around and helped me get over this maybe he wouldn't? I know that he is still scared of me on some level."

He scoffed, "How could someone be scared of you?"

I paused, "I fed on him once."

"Oh shit. Yah that might do it. But he is also human."

I looked at him questionably, "So what would happen if I fed on you?"

Leigh raised his eyebrow at me, "Why? You want to try?" He winked, "Im just kidding. I actually have no idea."

"Hmm. Do you know how to help me then?"

"Oh so an hour with me and you're already down to help yourself."

"Ha-ha." Giving him an elbow nudge to walk along the beach."

"See you need me."

I rolled my eyes, "So where are you gonna stay?"

An adorable grin appeared on his handsome face, "Believe it or not I actually have a small place in the woods out here. I have to make sure I have places here and there just in case I shift and run."

I smiled up at him, "So you're going to stay?"

"looks like you need help so why not?"
