Diminishing Hate, Growing Love (One Direction Fanfic)

CREDIT TO MY FRIEND EMILY for writing this introduction kinda into the story because I was having difficulties :P

And also this story is inspired by a fan fic called Hired For Styles written by one of my favorite authors, @fanficsforbabes. My story is a different take on being hired to date Harry so you all should check hers out!

Since the first day of school, Emma has been dreaming of attending a world ranked college. For twelve long years, she has poured her heart into her studies to insure her spot at Harvard College in Cambridge but one obstacle stands in the way. Her parents have no way to pay for such a prestigious college. Emma runs out of hope.
Just when she thinks all is lost, she finds herself outside a One Direction concert at her high school. Everything about them makes her seethe with hatred: how they flaunt their money, feed their egos, even simply doing what they're paid to do. Who would've guessed that just sitting against that lonesome brick wall would chang

12. Conflicted Feelings and Consoled Hearts

~Chapter 11- Conflicted Feelings and Consoled Hearts~

CHIRP CHIRP CHIRP. The trilling of crickets woke me up from my sleep. The alarm clock read 9:53. My eyes wandered to my phone where the trilling cricket noises were coming from.

The screen was lit up with Olivia's name portrayed. I lazily rolled to my side and slid open my phone after entering the easy password.

Olivia- Be ready at noon. You, Harry, and the other lads of One Direction are going on a boat for the afternoon. There will be no paparazzi ON the boat but I still expect pictures at the end of the day. You may not cancel on this or will therefore be breaking the contract due to all the dates you have previously cancelled on. I've been nice long enough. 12 o'clock sharp. Bring a suit.

A deep groan reverberated up my throat. She really means it this time I could tell. There was no way I was getting out of this.

I wiped my crusty eyes. Tears from the night before had dried and all in all, I looked ghastly.

I had about two hours to get ready not only physically but emotionally as well. I had to face Harry and the other lads. Should be interesting.

I took a long, hot shower and made sure to shave my legs considering I don't want to look like a man... Awkward. After drying my hair, I brushed it out so it was in long waves. I applied waterproof mascara and a little eyeliner. I also added a bit of waterproof concealer to disguise the light -but growing darker- bags under my eyes.

Next up: clothes. I decided on a bikini with puka shells on the top. It had a pink background and a tan beachy pattern over it. (I totally suck at describing soooo sorry).

On top of the bikini, I wore a flowy salmon swim coverup with a pattern over the chest. (Again, sorry for my bad description). I grabbed a pair of white rope sandles to complete the look. My phone buzzed and chirped, telling me I'd received another text.

Harry- Ill be there in 10 to pick you up. The boys are late so we will go back to grab them.

I hastily texted him back, not wanting to have to be with him alone.

Me- No. Ill meet you at your flat in 20 minutes.

After sending it, I realized it had been a bit brash but it was too late now.

I shuffled around our house grabbing some shades, a beach towel, sunscreen, and a bag to put it all in.

Checking the time on my phone, I looked at the numbers I dreaded to see. Time to face Harry.
My mind floated away from my body as somehow my feet carried me to the door of Harry's flat. My hand knocked then brought itself back to fidget with my other hand at my side. Liam answered the door and I automatically let out a sigh of relief.

Liam's face was a bit puzzled sending me to the conclusion I had actually sighed out loud. "I-er was so thirsty. I just couldn't wait for someone to open the door so I could get a drink." I stumbled out a quick reason. Liam followed it with a "humph" then gestured me into Harry's house and closed the door behind me like a gentleman.

"I'll get you a drink, my thirsty lady." He chuckled and headed towards the kitchen for my water.

Harry wandered from his room around the corner to come to the surprise that I'd arrived. He must not have heard the knock. "Er-hello Harry. Nice to see you." I awkwardly stated, not sure what to say.

"Hello, Emma. Same to you." Harry pulled a response.

"Sorry about not being able to make it to the other scheduled outings," (I liked to use that word instead of date because it made me feel better subconsciously about the situation.) "My parents love family activities..." I trailed off hoping he wouldn't ask me to explain further. My wish was granted as he laid down on the couch and flipped on the TV.

"Well? Are you going to sit down?" He questioned me then gestured to the couch, his eyebrows knitting upwards and his lips in a frown.

"I'm okay. I think I'll help Liam with my water." I mumbled and walked towards the kitchen.

I strolled in to see Liam tearing apart the drawers as he seemed to be looking for something. After a couple of seconds I politely kind of cleared my throat so he knew I was there. He stood up so his back wasn't arched under the sleek, newly painted cupboards. His cheeks glowed a bright pink when I sort of announced myself. "I was just trying to find an umbrella for your water, you know to make it fun." His head dropped towards his feet, chuckling slowly but unsurely.

I walked up besides him, tapped his arm and replied, "Thank you, Liam. That is very sweet of you." His eyes were deep pools of chocolate, instantly reminding me of Charlie an the Chocolate Factory. "I'm alright with just a normal water though," I added, chuckling. We walked out of the kitchen together and took a seat on the love seat, me on one side and Liam on the other. Harry raised his eyebrows sort of questioning why we were sitting next to each other but I shrugged it off.

About 15 minutes later, Niall, Louis, and Zayn were ready and we all piled into Harry's black Range Rover, me taking shotgun.

We took a long drive and finally reached a private pier with a couple boats docked off it. We all got piled out of the car and started towards the end of the pier. Harry came to my side and intertwined our fingers. "Just in case," he whispered while doing it. I nodded. There was a chance paparazzi could be at the pier. Olivia only said they wouldn't be on our boat.

My mind drifted off as we strolled to the boat, but my eyes spotted someone about 20 paces ahead.
She had long, blonde curly hair, brown eyes, was fairskinned and I estimated to be about 5'7". I blinked my eyes repeatedly. It couldn't be her, that's not possible. I mean I guess it could... What would Gabriella be doing here though?

My breathing increased rapidly and my throat felt like it was closing with every second. I stumbled on the old wood pier detaching my hand from Harry's. My eyes shot back to where I had seen Gabriella leaning against a boat but she was no longer there.

A chorus of "are you alrights" rung in my ears, Harry's being the loudest. Since Gabriella was nowhere to be seen my breathing slowed down. Harry continuously rubbed my back until my breathing was back to normal and I finally caught wind of him doing that. I shrugged him off and started walking again ahead of the lads.

Seeing Gabriella brought my fears to mind once again. How would she feel if she knew this was happening? I know I would be disgusted with my friend if they were in my place. I physically shook my head as if that would shake the thoughts away.

The guys had finally caught up again just as we reached the boat and climbed aboard. We walked up the mini flight of stairs to come to a shaded open area.

It was furnished with white leather couches, glass tables, a refrigerator and a TV.

Niall immediately flung himself upon the white leather couch in front of the TV after grabbing food from the fridge.

Zayn joined Niall on a leather couch and pulled out his phone, my guess to text Perrie. Louis took a seat next to Niall and rested his feet on a glass table, his arm slung around Niall. What a bromance.

I opted to sit on the side of the boat where I wasn't seen. I let my feet dangle over the edge of the now moving boat, my head and body behind the safety rails.

Wind blew my hair right as we took towards sea. Sea spray splattered my face, and my lungs inhaled the fresh ocean air. I could get used to this. It was absolutely beautiful out here.

My eyes wandered to the water below me and I watched it ripple, the light reflecting off in beams. I truly understood the beauty of water, being a swimmer I appreciated the essence of it. You could say I have a second life in the water.

My thoughts scattered as a warm body sat next to me. It radiated heat. Unlike normal, I didn't turn my head, curious to see who it was. I wasn't in the mood. They would speak sometime anyway.

The question as to who sat next to me was answered after several moments of enjoying nature's beauty.

"What happened back there?" Liam's sweet, soothing voice prodded my thoughts.

I took a whole before answering, not stating everything about the situation. "I hyperventilated. It happens, sometimes randomly." I added the last part, hoping he would buy it but was unsuccessful.

"You don't need to make an excuse to be strong all the time, Emma. People don't hyperventilate for no reason." I could tell his face was pointed towards me by the way his words came out.

"You don't get it. I DO have to be strong. If I don't at least pretend then I'll fall apart completely." The statement came out shaky, a lot less forceful then I wish it had.

Liam pulled me next to him, a friendly gesture, or at least I believed so. His arm wrapped around me, taking me closer to him.

"Not to me, Emma. We are friends, you can trust me."

I didn't reply immediately which is why I think he went on, believing I needed more encouragement. Fine by me, I thought. I'm good on waiting to talk.

"Normally when people meet Harry or have the chance to spend time with him they are happy, and sometimes feel privileged even to do so. So what makes you different?"

I wasn't sure how to answer that. My mind was telling me, NO NO NO. DON'T TELL LIAM. But my heart said, go ahead. You can trust him. My heart winning the battle, I started out slowly.

"Back there before I hyperventilated, I saw a girl in front of me. I had imagined her of course." I hastily added.
"She wasn't just any random girl though, her name is Gabriella. She is my friend. I used to live in England, you see. We were best friends then, inseparable even. But something happened. Harry happened." I momentarily paused to look down at my wriggling toes before going on.

"I lived in Cheshire and it just so happened that Gabriella dated Harry. It seemed to me they were in love. Although I don't know what love is exactly... I've never felt it. Atleast I thought I did for awhile but that's another story. Crazy thing though, to be in love so young. I was 16 then, as was Harry and Gabriella. They dated for a long time, but I never liked Harry. I never took the time to get to know him. I just didn't wanted Gabriella getting hurt. I warned her but she just wouldn't listen to me. She would always go on about how if anyone got hurt, it would be him. That changed though. I came home one day to hear that she had attempted suicide. My Gabriella, my best friend I had known since birth, had attempted suicide."

A tear trickled from my right eye and a sniffle came from my nose. The sudden loss of movement had also indicated the boat had stopped to drift.

"I knew he wasn't good for her. I knew it but I let their relationship happen anyway. After she got out of the hospital and weeks of denial on my part that she had attempted IT, I finally went and saw her. I didn't think it was possible but my heart broke a little more that day after what she said: Harry had broken her heart. She claimed he ripped it to shreds after breaking up with her and she felt so horrible she overdosed and almost died." Tears now continuously dropped from my face.

"The day she told me that was one of the worst days of my life, second to only the day I found out she had tried to kill herself."

After my speech, I lifted my head from where it rested on Liam's shoulder to look at his face. His eyebrows were curled down along with his mouth. I could see tears puddled up in his eyes and his nose was scrunched like a rabbit's.

"And when you saw Gabriella a few moments ago, she reminded you of what you were going through with even after what had happened to her." He confirmed my feelings, right on target as well. I slowly nodded my head, unnecessary though because he already knew the answer.

"How did you know?" I wondered aloud.

"Because it's happened to me before."

Out of all the things I thought possible to come out of his mouth as an answer, that was most certainly not one of them.

This broke me down further, and I bawled. I let it out. In between quiet sobs, I spoke, "What I'm doing is so wrong Liam. It hurts me you know? It hurts for me to have to do this. I feel like I'm indirectly stabbing her heart again."

He swiped the free-falling tears from my face and tucked my hair behind my ears. His mouth had just barely opened and I eagerly waited for his words of wisdom only to be interrupted by Harry.

He had walked around the side of the boat to find me being comforted by Liam with his hand on my hair. His face was a mixture of puzzle, confusion, anger, and unhappiness. As for the last emotion, I just didn't understand.

"I was just about to say I was looking for you, Emma." He directly talked to me. "I'm sorry to have interrupted though..." He trailed off and began to walk away.

"Oh this? This was uh-nothing." I motioned to Liam and I while wiping my face free of tears. "I was just about to hop in the water anyway." I pulled my swim coverup off along with my sunglasses and stepped under the rail. I dropped my body away from the boat and swam a couple strokes away and began to float.

Liam's P.O.V.

She understands me. She-she gets me. This realization suddenly came to me. I was about to tell her this when Harry popped around the side of the boat. His face turned a shade pink and uncomfortable when he saw the position Emma and I were in. We are friends don't get me wrong. It just felt nice to be able to comfort her and all.

"I was just about to say I was looking for you, Emma." His words were directed at her. "I'm sorry to have interrupted though..." He began to back off.

"Oh this? This was uh-nothing". Emma motioned at us. I'll admit, that stung a bit. She pulled off her top and jumped into the water. I turned to Harry. His face was indecipherable.

"Do you know what that will look like to paparazzi, Liam?" His tone was bold, strong, and a bit unnerving. "Olivia won't be pleased with you. You ought to stay away from Emma." I'm sure I'm wrong but I could swear a little jealously pulsed through his last words, warning me to keep away.

"We are friends, Harry. What are you so worried about?" I wasn't as dumbfounded as I led my voice to sound.

Harry took one last look at me, turned and led himself back to the boys but sat on a separate couch. Something's up...

One more thing! Because nobody ever comments and I'm not sure people ever read my author's notes, I'm doing a contest kinda thing. If you read my author's notes, at the end ill always post a word and you have to comment the word.
