9. Chapter 9

"In-team sparring!"

"You say it like it's a good thing," you drawled in reply to Xemnas. The entire Organization was seated in the meeting hall by request of your leader. Currently, he was proudly announcing the task of the day- sparring amongst teammates. It was something you weren't too thrilled about getting back to.

"Keep up the attitude, Xevia, and you'll find yourself assigned a partner," Xemnas shot back warningly. Naturally, you mocked him by rolling your eyes and 'chewing' on your tongue. "So before we begin, I need to cover a few things. First of all, Axel, you are forbidden to work with Roxas. I have not forgotten what happened last time."

"No brainer. I'll take the rookie." Axel tossed you a wink, making you roll your eyes once again.

"In addition, the...'Rookie' has had her I.D. modified. Since this Organization is not missing any members, we now have fourteen people. Organization XIII has its name because of its thirteen participants. Since we are not going to be called Organization XIV, the Sadistic Heartbreaker shall now be Number 0.

"Fair enough. Ratings are by numbers, right? So that means I can order you around, right?" You grinned widely.

"I didn't give you permission to reply, Mister."

"Don't talk back to me!"

"Xevia, shut up," Saïx cut in harshly. You pressed your lips together tightly before muttering an apology.

"Now that everything has been addressed, you may choose a place in the castle and begin." Under Xemnas's word, people began to pair up, decide on a sparring location, and disappear. When your feet touched the floor, an arm was draped lazily over your shoulders.

Glancing upward, you stared at Axel with a frown at his strange antics. He gave you a smirk, one of his triangle tattoos scrunching up. Grabbing his wrist, you pulled his arm off of you.

"So where are we off to, Sweetheart?" he questioned smoothly, completely immune to your playful rejection.

"Someplace where I can get away from you and take a nap."

"I'm hurt." He placed his hand over where his heart would be. "And here I thought we could be friends."

"How can anyone be just friends after what I had with your other? It's impossible?"

"You're so right. We could be friends with benefits."

"I'm not a booty call, Axel. You have Roxas for that." You walked a few feet from him, turned, pursed your lips, and crossed your arms.

"Ouch, what a burn! You're killing me, Xevia."

"Call me _(Name)_...please."

"_(Name)_, then. Tell me- what are my legal grounds?" You shook your head in response. "What?" Letting your arms drop, you stepped up to him, your forehead directly below his chin, and the echo of your footsteps in the empty hall still ringing in your ears.

"You don't know how long I spent trying to find you," came your soft whisper.

"Then why the resistance?" he egged on.

"Because you don't love me; your other did. I will not fool myself into thinking I can just pick up where I left off."

"He told me all about you; I don't think it would take me very long."

"I don't' care. Look, can we just get this over with?"

"Go easy on me, 'kay? You've already wounded my heart."

"What heart?'

"You are my heart, remember?" Stumbling backward, you stared at this man in horror.

"W-What did you just say?" you stammered.

"You're my heart."

"N-No. You have no right to say that. You're not...him. You just share DNA."

"Should I jog your memory on just how alike we are, _(Name)_?" He stepped forward, a sly smirk on his face.

"Get away from me!" Pressing your hands against his chest, you shoved him backward. A frown marred his picturesque face- a classic expression of shock and pain.

"I don't want to repeat my mistakes. Don't touch me!" You slapped his hand away before leaping backward and summoning your bo staff. "Axel, I'm warning you."

"That actually sounded like a threat. You're getting good at this."

"It was a threat. Now back off." Once more, he inched forward, and you tightened your grip on your weapon. When he moved yet again, you swung the staff at his head, hearing a sickening clash that set your fingers tingling.

His chakram had blocked the blow, and sparks now settled in his electric jade eyes. Now when he moved closer, it was more dangerous; like a predator to its prey. Heat increased around you as you felt his power spike.

"Boy, you really shouldn't have done that," he growled darkly.

"What's the matter? Afraid I'll bruise your beautiful face? Wouldn't Roxas be so depressed?"

"You're barking up the wrong tree. Are you sure you want to do this?"

"Proof- you're not the same. My Axel would have eventually backed off. You're just a cheap copy."

"Who can fight twice as hard." Flames erupted in the room, sending your body ablaze with sweat. Axel twirled his weapons, eyes narrowed challengingly. Hell, you weren't going to make the first move.

"You don't look all that promising from over there."

"Well maybe you should get closer."

"I'm content right where I am." He thought about this before launching himself forward and raising a chakram. It became a blur of weapons and flickering fire as the two of you danced in the heat of battle...to the literal sense.

It was an easy win- you spun around to bring your staff down upon his shoulders, but he ducked, so you brought it to your opposite side to catch your own swing. However, the chakrams snagged your right leg and brought you to the floor in a sweeping motion. It was over fast, for you hadn't the strength to get up.

Instead, you hugged yourself and hung your head, soon feeling the pyromaniac's element die down. Your body was practically limp with the thought of just who this man was and how much you wanted to believe things could go back to the way they were.

"_(Name)_?" You remained silent for a moment, drawing in deep breaths.

"I thought I'd lost you...I waited for any sign...looked for you. I loved your other so much, and I feel awful for the way I treated him. He was my best friend, and the only one who could have made me happy.

"Please understand that I have nothing against you, Axel...I'm just afraid of feeling the same pain as I did when he left me." The Flurry of Dancing Flames knelt beside you and cocked his head.

"Xevia, in a strange, detached way, I have feelings for you. Our others are connected to us. Not to mention you're downright entertaining." He winked, making you smile. I'm not here to take his place; I'm here because I want to be."

"Axel..." You threw yourself into his arms and buried your face in his chest. "There were so many nights after he left that I lie awake, just wanting to feel him next o me and hear, 'you looked cold' again. I'm just so confused because I miss him, and...well...you're him."

He gave you a light hug, just letting you comfort yourself in his arms. The familiar pressure of his nose in your hair didn't take long to arrive. A low rumble went through him, much like a manly purr.

"Your hair smells nice," he stated matter-of-factly, making you laugh.

"He used to say that to me all the time."

"Well maybe it's because it really does."

"It can't smell as wonderful as you do." Eyes widening, you turned to hide your blush, but a gentle hand on your shoulder made you face him once again.

"He never mentioned how bashful you are..."

"I wasn't back then." Once more, you tried to get away, but he thwarted you a second time.

"I like it. It's cute." Damn him for making it worse.

"Axel, stop flirting when we're supposed to be sparring."

"You're the one who was just snuggle-bombing me earlier!"

"That's because I'm a lady, and I'm Number 0. I can have my say any way I like."

"Does Xemnas agree with that?" he pressed accusingly.

"Xemnas Schmemnas...not yet, but he will."

"Oh, yes; he's bound to give you full reign someday soon."

"I know! It's destiny!"

"Whatever stops the tears."

"That's my line!"

"I'm sorry? For now, you are inferior to me. Hence, it is now my line."

"Whatever stops the tears." You patted him on the back and walked away.

"Wait...sparring? Hello?"

"You won, I lost. End of story."

"And the details?"

"Tell them the truth. It won't kill this Organization to hear something other than rumors and lies now and then."

"I think you're being a little over-dramatic."

"No, being over-dramatic would be putting skunks in everyone's rooms...which, by the way, I did to Xigbar before arriving to the meeting. I suspect it will not be long now."

"That is impeccably cruel...and hilarious!"

"I know. I can't wait to see how he-" You were drowned out by a shrill scream. "Bingo."

"Xevia!" The Freeshooter called.

"That's my cue- gotta hide. Catch ya later, Axel!"
