Counting Stars

16 year old Lela Hemmings has never felt real love. Her father died when she was 15 and her mother died giving birth to Lela. Lela lives with her Aunt. She is depressed, insecure, and shy. She walks the halls with her head down and her mouth shut. She is bullied though. Pushed. Laughed at. Judged. Due to her shyness, she literally doesn't talk to people. At all. As a result, she is afraid to stand up for herself. Then someone walked into her life. She didn't want them to stay, but she didn't want them to leave. Can someone as simple as a person, as simple as a boy, change her life?

8. Yelling and Crying.

Yelling and Crying.

I rest my head on Ashton's shoulder as he draws a picture. I watch as his pen moves quickly across the page, making scribbles and perfect lines shading and outlining.

He finally shows me the picture. It's me. I smile. I kiss his cheek.

"I, um, was wondering, why don't you talk to your aunt. She seems nice." He asks. I look up at him.

"She doesn't understand, and neither will you, or anyone else." I say simply.

"Of course we don't. and we wont be able to understand until you speak up." He says starting to raise his voice.

"What if, I don't want to speak up! What if I want to keep my pain to myself! Maybe I like being quiet. Talking doesn't mean I will get bullied less, it doesn't mean all the bitches will go away! It doesn't mean I will know my mom! It doesn't mean that my dad will be here to hold me in his arms and sing me to sleep. It doesn't mean anything except the fact that I'm talking!" I yell.

"I'm just trying to help you!"

"Ever thought that maybe I care about you!"

"Well how about you stop caring about me and care about your family! Your dad and your step mom! They care about you!"

"You think they care? I stay in my room because they don't care! My dad is an alcoholic and my step mom is a fucking drug addict!" He pulls up his sleeve. "These bruises are from my dad! Same as the scars! At least YOU have someone that cares about you! Your aunt told me about how much she misses your smile! She just wants the old you back! She just wants you back!" He yells. I can feel the tears starting to burn.

I push him past me and I run home.

*Later that night.*

I walk into my aunts room. She is sitting on the bed reading.

I sit next to her.

"Are you okay?" She asks. I hug her. I can tell she is shocked.

"Thank you." I whisper. She pulls away from my hug.

"Did you just, say something?" She says.

"Yes." I say. She smiles.

"Well thank god. I was starting to seriously get upset." She sighs.

"Thank you for being here for me. I'm sorry that I have been ignoring you." I say. She smiles and brushes a strand of hair out of my face and behind my ear.

"Sweetie, its okay. I have you back now and that's all that matters. No go to bed, we wouldn't want to be late for school tomorrow." She says. I stand up and go to bed.
