7. Chapter 5

She was different from the others.

I tried to get to know Mia better, but she kept avoiding me.

Funny how in about a week, your sights can change completely. I was now fixed on Mia.

Unfortunately, so was Derek.

He made it pretty clear, too. I didn't say anything. It would probably get really competitive from there on, and I didn't want that.

I soon learned that Mia was a child of study. She was very smart. I smiled at that thought. I was one of the "smart people" too.

I was also on the swim team. My mother always claimed swimming was something I was born to do.

Derek played basketball and Avery played soccer. As far as I knew, though, Mia had nothing to do with sports.

I was thinking about as I got changed after my swim meet. Coach had been working us super hard for our next tournament.

My train of thought stopped abruptly as I stepped out the door and nearly tripped over a.... Goose?

"Why the heck is there a goose in the hallway?"

"Preston? Oh my god, I'm so sorry! He got away from me, I swear!"

It was Mia.

What a fluke.

"Hey, Mia. Why do you have a goose?"

Mia cleared her throat awkwardly. Her cheeks were bright red and she refused to look at me. I looked down and realized why; I had no shirt on.

Oops. I felt my own face heating up and I quickly pulled on my sweatshirt.

"Well, um, he's not actually my goose." Mia said. "He's for a project."

I raised my eyebrows. Most projects didn't involve geese.

Mia's blush grew darker. "Long story short- we were supposed to research any animal. Extra credit if you can bring it in. So I did geese."

I smiled. "Need some help?"

"Oh no, that's okay. I don't want to bother you."

"No worries, really. My mom won't mind if I'm a little late."

Mia smiled gratefully. "Thank you so much, Preston."

I grinned in return. "Just let me text my mom."

Mia nodded.

Hey, mom, I'm going to be a little late coming home. Just helping a friend. Love ya. I quickly typed into my phone. "Okey-dokey," I said. "Let's catch your friend."

Mia's smile faltered and a look of confusion took over. "Where'd he go?"

We exchanged a look.

"You take that hall. I'll go this way." Mia pointed down the east wing.

I bolted down the hall she had told me to check. The senior way.

"Hey, goosey, goosey, goosey. Come on out..."

I shivered. It was cold this way.

"Hey goose!" I called out.

I turned around.
