An Old Friend [Niall Horan/Ariana Grande fanfiction]

Long ago, before the fame, Ariana Grande was just a normal girl from Boca Raton, Florida. And becoming a member of the most popular boy band in the world was just a twinkle in Niall Horan's eye. What everyone didn't know was . . . they were best friends. And maybe something more. But they lost touch over the years. Now, Ariana's devastating cancer is back. And this time Niall's never letting her go.

1. An Unexpected Call

Ariana POV

"Let me see you put your hearts up, yeah, let me see you put your hearts up, yeah, if we give a little love maybe we can change the world."

As I sang the words to my first single onstage, the crowd roared with cheers, whistles, and applause. I smiled and reached down to touch the hands of people in the front row. "I love you, Ari!" they shouted. As always I was filled with happiness. This is what I loved about being famous; having all these amazing fans that love you just for doing what you love to do. The other stuff, the paparazzi, the awful rumors . . . those things I could live without.

I waved to the crowd and then sang my last verse, "Hey, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah...,"

The stadium was filled with roars of cheers and applause. I took my beautiful pink dress my designer had made for me and did a curtsy with it. The crowd went wild again. As usual I couldn't stop smiling. "Thank you so much, I love you guys!" I shouted into the mic. Thousands of voices replied, "We love you too Ari!!!" I giggled and went backstage to change into more regular clothes. This had been my last song. After this I was headed out to do my meet and greet.

"You killed it out there, Ari," my brother Frankie said as soon as he saw me, enveloping me in a hug.

"As usual," I replied jokingly. We both laughed. "I better go up there to tell them about the meet and greet," Frankie said. I nodded. "Okay, brother bear. Be back soon!" I waved as he went onstage. I then went to the backstage area and my stage assistants helped me undo my beautiful dress. Then I changed into a nice floral dress and put a bow in my half-up, half down dark red hair. Just as I was leaving my phone buzzed from the dresser. I picked it up and saw I had a new message from a number I didn't know. Hmm, I wonder who it was?

Just then my phone started ringing. It was the same number that had texted me. I slid my finger over the slide to answer button and pressed my phone to my ear. "Hello? I'm kind of at my concert right now."

"Sorry to bother you," a voice that sounded achingly familiar said. I squinted in confusion. Where have I heard that voice? It had an accent that sounded . . . Irish . . .

"I just needed to call. I can't stop thinking about you, Ariana." the voice continued.

"Who is this?" I asked, my eyes widening. I swear I've heard that voice before. A long time ago. It sounded so familiar I felt like I could just go back in time.

"It's Niall, your old best friend from elementary school. But you probably know me as Niall Horan from One Direction now."

My heart skipped a beat. I couldn't believe it. Niall had called, after all this time? I stood perfectly still, my mouth wide open. I didn't even notice when I dropped the phone.
