The Brim of Desire

2. Accidental Discovery

The sun had just set and Varun was resting his head on the cool-tiled wall in the city square after laying flowers for his parents. He still remembered the night of 2nd June 1991 when his neighbour revealed a very horrid turn of events- that his parents were no more. The memories of the night still haunted him. The emptiness he felt was reaching infinity. He felt very still and empty, the way the eye of a tornado must feel, moving dully along in the middle of the surrounding hullabaloo.

Life wasn’t exactly fair, but he waved that thought off. He actually looked forward to his life’s ‘downs’. He felt that a completely happy time would be of the least excitement to him, only if he had ‘downs’, could he relish and respect life’s ‘ups’.

Varun had been engaged to Mansi since a year. She was a beautiful girl with a beautiful heart, but he thought that off late, they didn’t really connect. They were completely off sync. He didn’t know how to break it to her. It was not the feeling of completeness he so needed, but the feeling of not being empty.

As he was walking along the wall and embracing it for its cool comfort, he accidentally pushed a loose brick and a piece of worn and faded parchment fell out.
