James cares for his country. But he worries about Isobel and that stirred something inside of him which could stir something bigger in the country.

(It is set in the olden days incase that isn't clear in my writing haha, not quite sure what year, but somewhere waaaaay far back like in the 1400s :D)

4. 4.

"Isobel." I feel Matilda tugging at my arm as we wait outside the palace for the horse and carriage to be ready.

I snap out of my daze. "Yes Tilly?"

"Why do we have to go home?" she asks. "Father terrifies me."

Inside my chest, something shifts but I keep a brave face. "I'll keep you safe Tilly. I love you."

She wraps her arm around my waist and I want to hold her forever but James clears his throat behind me. I turn around, holding onto Tilly.

"Yes?" I ask. There's a tension in the air as I know we are both thinking about what happened last night but we are both acting like nothing did.

"A word please, miss?" he asks.

I stroke Tilly's hair once more, passing her over to Elijah who scoops her up in his arms and I walk away with James.

He sighs, looking around as he turns to face me. "Isobel this is my last offer to let you ask me to help you. This is your last chance to give me permission."

I shake my head. "No."

He ducks his head looking dissapointed. When he looks at me again, he leans his forehead on mine too. I want to pull away but something inside myself is stopping me. "Then stay here, with me."

"That would be classed as you helping me, your grace." I smile. "I will be just fine, I've dealt with it all before, I will do it again."

"You shouldn't have to." he says, still not smiling.

"Shh." I hush him. It's still quite surreal that I am here with the prince who cares for me. "Don't you worry your royal little mind."

There is a call in the distance telling us it is time for me to leave. I look back and turn to face James again.

"Thank you." I say and I do something that breaks all of my rules. I stand on my tiptoes and kiss him lightly on the lips. He kisses me back, wanting to make it more but I won't allow it to go that far. I smile, pulling away. "Thank you so much."

I hurry away to the horse and carriage and I think I hear him say "You're very welcome!".
