7. Chapter 6

"No," She said quietly. "It's not."

Justin stared at her for a long while before replying. "Don't lie to me."

Audrey sighed. She had to admit that the ice that Justin had gotten for her was about the best thing she's felt in a while. She carefully sat up, ignoring the way that Justin's body tensed up when she did.

"Maybe I'm just scared when you touch me because you're part of a gang and you're scary."

Justin narrowed his eyes. "I saw what happened, Audrey." he said, ignoring what she had just said. "Whoever was in there has been hitting you for a while. I can tell because of the way that you didn't want me to help you, like you could help yourself." He paused. "I thought you were going to die, you were coughing up so much blood. You needed help."

"No, I did not need help! Especially yours!" Audrey found her voice rising to a yell, and she fought to keep it quiet.

Justin stood up from his spot on the bed and glared at her. "Fine. If you don't need my help, you might as well get up and I'll take you back home."

Audrey's eyes widened as he started to walk away. She reached forward enough to catch his wrist. He turned around to look at her.

"I don't want to go back." She whispered.

Justin looked at her with an unreadable expression. "Then stay here." he said.

Audrey let out a breath that she hadn't realized she'd been holding. Justin held out his hand to her, and she hesitantly reached for it.

"Can't you trust me?" He asked, sounding somewhat hurt.

She nodded and grabbed his hand. A ghost of a smile touched his lips as he interlaced their fingers, and Audrey shivered.

"Let's make a promise." Justin said suddenly. He looked up at her with wide eyes. "Can you do that for me?"

"I'll do it," Audrey said. "But not for you. Justin, I barely know you. I'm glad that you're letting me stay here now and all, but-"

She was about to finish her sentence, when Justin leaned forward and placed his lips lightly to hers. At first, she didn't know what to do. Nobody's ever, ever, been so gentle with her before. Plus, she couldn't remember the last time that someone's kissed her. But when Justin let go of her hand, and cupped her face, he sort of guided her.

Audrey closed her eyes as he kissed her, and for a moment, she wanted nothing more than to stay like that. Sadly, the door opened and they sprang apart from each other. Audrey's breathing was fast and uneven as she looked from Justin's friend in the doorway to Justin.

"Didn't realize that you'd be bringing someone home tonight." the guy said with a smirk. "Should I leave you alone?"

Justin rolled his eyes. "Try to restrain yourself from becoming a douche-bag like Liam, Seth. I expect better from you."

Audrey looked at the boy standing in the door way again. He had black, floppy hair that he had to push out of his eyes every few seconds, and his eyes were a bright blue. He also had freckles. She thought he was kind of cute.

"Then, why were you two kissing on your bed, and why doesn't she have a shirt on?" Seth asked.

Audrey thought that Justin would be at a loss for words, but he wasn't. "If you'll notice the giant bruise on this girl--along with the ice--you'll understand that I am only trying to help her."

Seth glanced at Audrey. "You're that girl from the restaurant, aren't you?"

She nodded.

"What happened?" Seth gestured to her stomach where the bruise was now visible, and the ice that had once been on it lay on the floor. Audrey hastily brought the blankets up over the bruise and shook her head. If she were going to tell someone about her abusive aunt, it would only be Justin. Because, after all, he was the one who had witnessed one of her beatings.

"I don't think she wants to tell anybody," Justin said to his friend. "Which is fine. I mean, she barely knows us."

Audrey thought that Seth might just keep asking her, but instead, he pushed his hair out of his eyes once more, and walked out. Justin turned around to look at her again.

"Do you want to borrow a shirt?" He asked. "Does it hurt anymore? Is your jaw okay?"

Audrey fought back the urge to smile. "I t-think I'm okay. And yes, I could use a shirt."

Justin nodded, got up, and walked over to the closet. He pulled out a plain gray t-shirt and handed it to Audrey.

As she took it and put it on, she said, "Thanks."

"No problem," He said. "I don't want to be pushy or anything...but I really want to know who's been hurting you so I can go back to that house and murder them. It'll be quick, I promise."

Audrey sighed. "Don't murder someone just because they've been hurting somebody else. I'm fine, I'm used to it. Plus, you've never cared before and you've always been a jerk to me. If I go back to the house to get hit again, you'll pretend that you care. But if I stay here, out of harms way, you'll just go back to being this rude, air-headed gang guy."

"Audrey, I'm not pretending. I do really ca-"

His words were cut off by the sharp sound of someone knocking at the door. Justin sighed and got up. He threw the door open to reveal yet another one of his friends. This was the shorter guy that Audrey remembered. He was the one who had always been squished between Justin and--from what she remembered Justin calling him--Liam.

"What makes all of you bastards think it's okay to just come up to my room?" Justin spat and spoke again before his friend could answer. "What do you want, Austin?"

When Austin spoke, he sounded out of breath. "The girls are here. Downstairs. Claire wants to see you."

"Okay, fine. I'll be down in a sec." Justin said, and shut the door. He leaned up against it and groaned, before looking at Audrey again.

"Stay here." He said. "I just have to go do something really quick."

Audrey nodded, not wanting to argue with him at the moment. He smiled faintly at her as he opened the door and left the room. She immediately threw the blanket off of her, and stood up. She was going to follow him, because she had this weird urge to figure out who these girls were. Especially Claire.

With one last sigh, Audrey walked out of the door and stepped out into the hallway. She wondered what Justin was going to say when she came down the stairs, and she knew that he wasn't going to be happy with her for not listening to him.

But she didn't care. Because he didn't have the right to tell her what to do, she thought. And with that, she quietly walked down the stairs.
