This Love Is Real

An entry for the "Inspired By A Song" contest. Inspired by Taylor Swift's Love Story, this is Ronan and Julia's love story.

2. Part II: Just Say "Yes"

Part II

Just Say “Yes”

It was just under 6 years since I had sent that email, it was summer and I was walking through a park on the outskirts of town on my way back home from an acoustic performance at the town theatre. I had with me a brown satchel and my guitar in its case and I was quietly singing the lyrics to a song that had played at my twenty-second birthday party the day before.

I’d gotten tired of waiting and wondering if Ronan was ever coming around. My faith in him had faded and I’d been trying to forget about him… unsuccessfully. I’d tried to forget him by having a boyfriend, but it hadn’t felt right and the boy had got bored of me eventually and left me for someone who was “so much better”, apparently.

But I tried not to think about that too much, I made myself focus on other things, because everything else in my life apart from love was actually going well.

“It’s miserable and magical, oh yeah.” I sang to myself.

Then I suddenly heard someone call my name and their voice made me stop on my tracks. I looked ahead of me and saw someone running towards me.

As they got closer I saw who it was. “Ronan?!”

He stopped about a metre in front of me. “Hi.” Was all he said.

“Hi.” I replied, shocked. “Ronan… what?”

“I’ve just come from your parents’ house.” He told me.

“You… what? Why? Hang on a second.” Ronan watched me and smiled. All I could do was stare at him. “I haven’t seen you in years.”

“I know.” He said simply.

“You… you never replied to my emails.” I said, but it was more of a question than a statement.

“I know.” He said, more sadly this time.

“Ronan…I, I’ve been feeling so alone since you stopped replying to my emails. I kept waiting and waiting but you never replied and you never came to see me. I just… I don’t know what to think.”

He stepped towards me. “I am really, truly sorry for leaving you like that. I’ve felt so bad and so guilty ever since. But my mum caught me emailing you and she was so angry because my parents disliked your parents as much as yours disliked mine. She changed my email password so I couldn’t log on to my account, then she made me another one which she monitored, she basically went over the top in making sure I could never contact you. I managed to guess the password and get back into my old account once and I saw your emails but mum caught me before I could reply. That third email broke my heart. I wanted to see you so badly but I couldn’t. I’ve missed you so much.”

“Oh, Ronan…” I put my guitar case down and stepped forward to hug him, with my arms around his neck. He put his arms around my waist and hugged me back. It felt magical again. “I’ve missed you too.” I mumbled into his neck and he laughed into my hair.

We stepped back from each other and he put a hand on each of my shoulders. “You look so different… but also kind of the same.” Ronan said.

“So do you.” I smiled up at him. “You’re definitely taller.”

He laughed. “Your hair is definitely different. But I like it.”

I laughed too, I’d gotten a fringe and had it straightened since I’d last seen him.

Then I thought for a moment. “Hang on, Ronan. Why were you just at my parents’ house?”

Ronan gave me a “I know something you don’t” smile. “Well, ever since I met you I’ve been trying to get my parents to let me see you and to stop being prejudiced against you because they don’t like your parents. And, recently it paid off and they agreed to meet your parents to talk through their problems with each other. So, my parents are now at your parents’ house and they’ve just agreed to put their issues aside and be friends again. To be honest, I don’t even know why they didn’t like each other in the first place; they’re getting along really well now. When I left they were talking about Countryfile.”

“Wow…” I was amazed. No more disputes. I could just be with Ronan... “Wait, what’s Countryfile?”

He laughed. “It’s like Blue Peter but for adults.”

“Oh, okay.”

“But anyway, our parents all agreed that I could ask you if you would…” He paused to look in his jacket pocket for something.

“If I would what?” I asked.

Then he did something that made my heart jump, he knelt to the ground and pulled out a ring and said “Marry me? Julia, I promise you I will never let you feel alone again.”

I stared at him, eyes wide. Was this really happening? “But we haven’t seen each other in years!”

He smiled widely. “I still love you! Just say “Yes”!”

I smiled widely back at him. “Yes.”

Ronan stood up and slipped the ring onto my left hand. Then he lent down and kissed me, sending sparks flying through my mind.

“I love you too.” I told him when he pulled away. He just kept on smiling at me.

He leant down and picked up my guitar for me. “Where to?” He asked, taking my left hand in his free one.

“Let’s go see our parents.” I said, and we started walking.

“Hey, Julia? Have you ever thought about how Ronan and Julia kind of sounds like Romeo and Juliet?” Ronan asked.

“No, that never came to mind, Ronan. It’s a ridiculous story anyway; they get married, like, a day after meeting each or something. And they kill themselves when they didn’t actually need to.” I told him.

“And here I thought you were the romantic one. You know, I heard a song a little while ago that reminded me of you.”

“Really, how does it go?”

“Well, it starts “We were both young when I first saw you”…”

The End.
