5. Chapter 5: Memories

I walked up the stairs to my mom's bedroom. I'm sure she's up there cleaning. When I got there the door was shut. I opened it and saw my mother and a strange man. I had no idea who he was, but I knew he was from an evil pack. I could smell it.

"Well, look who we have here. Just the girl I've been looking for." The man said. Why was he looking for me? I could tell that my face had gone pale. He lunged for me, but my mom shifted and attacked him. He got out of her grip and shifted too. I watched as they battled it out. I didn't know what to do. What could I do? They're fighting.

I heard a whimper and looked at my mom. She had shifted back into a human. She wasn't moving. I began to worry. Why isn't she moving? I walked closer to her and noticed she wasn't breathing. It felt like my heart stopped. I got down on my knees. Her eyes were glazed over. She's dead. My wolf said to me. I shook my head. She can't be!

The guy started clapping his hands slowly. I looked up at him.

"Look what you've done. You killed your mother." He said. I got up to my feet.

"I did not kill her, you did." I shouted. I was becoming angry. I could feel it radiating through my body. Soon I wouldn't be able to control myself.

"She was protecting you. If she had not of attacked me she would still be alive." I glared at him. I clenched my fists. I had enough. I lunged for him.

I was on top of him, biting at his neck. I was in wolf form now. I wasn't going to give him the chance to shift. If he did I would die. I growled. He tried getting out of my grip, but I was stronger now. I bit into his chest, then his throat. I watched as he died. I shifted into a human. I ran out of the room.

My dad was most likely in his office. I ran into the office. He was sitting there. He knew something was wrong.

"Zee, what's wrong?" He asked me. Tears rolled down my face.

"Mom died." That's all I could say. My dad got out of his chair and ran to her bedroom. There was blood on the floor from mom and the man. I watched my dad fall to the floor. I didn't know what it was like having a mate. I'm only thirteen. I do know that when your mate dies it's the worst pain you can ever feel. I heard my dad's sobs.

I was still crying.

"Do you want me to get Ryker?" I asked quietly. He nodded his head. I ran out of the room. I knew where he was. He was hanging out with Cameron and another one of his friends. Ryker saw that I was crying and ran over to me.

"What's wrong? Why are you crying?" I didn't want to tell him. I didn't want to believe that my mom was gone.

"Mom died protecting me from a guy." I said. I could tell that Ryker's whole world had stopped. That's what happened to me. He was about to cry, but didn't. He wanted to remain strong for me. He ran to the house. I didn't follow. I didn't want to see his reaction. I couldn't bring myself to move.

Tears kept rolling down my face. I couldn't stop them. I felt arms around me and felt comfort. I knew it was Cameron who was hugging me. He's my best friend. I cried into his shoulder. He didn't seem to mind. He drew circles on my back, trying to comfort me.

"She's g-gone C-Cameron." I said through sobs. He kissed my forehead. I tried to ignore the sparks that were shooting through my body from his touch.

"Shh," he said. He sat us down on the ground. After another hour my crying faded. It seemed as though I didn't have any more tears. Usually Cameron would try to make me laugh whenever I was sad, but he knew I had to cry over this. He understands.

"It's my fault she's dead." I said, looking into Cameron's grey eyes. He shook his head and brought me back into his arms.

"It's not your fault, Zee." He said. For a minute I believe him, but then Ryker and my dad walked out of the house. I could tell that Ryker had been crying.

"This is a lot worse than I had thought." I heard my dad mutter. What does he mean? What if he kicks me out? I can't lose both of my parents. I started to cry again.

"She's not really gone. She'll always be in your heart." Cameron whispered in my ear. She will always be in my heart. "She'll still protect you. I will protect you." My heart melted at his words. I snuggled closer to Cameron, taking in his scent.

I soon fell asleep.

I woke up with a start from my dream. I didn't want to remember that. It was awful. I got out of bed and turned on the light. I looked at the clock it's 12:30. I sighed. I don't think I'll be getting much sleep now. I ran outside and shifted.

Running usually clears my head. I ran through the dark forest. I went home after an hour of running. I went back to my bedroom. I lay there thinking. At times I still blame myself for her death. Helena, my mom, died because of me. It was in her nature. Her child had been threatened therefore she needed to attack him. I still can't believe I killed that man. I don't feel bad about it, I just don't know how I killed him. It happened so fast. I had never thought of killing someone until that day. It surprised me that I had killed him.

That day still confuses me. Why was that guy there? Who was he? Why did he want me? Question after question would go through my head whenever I remembered that day. I still haven't figured it out. I sighed and  turned off the light. Maybe I will be able to go back to sleep.

*A/N: I have decided to change Liam's name to Landon. The name Liam just wasn't really working for me. Hopefully there isn't any confusion.*
