Twelve Years Before (prequel to Journey of the Star Bearers)

Fantasy story about a girl who lives on a planet called Starre. This is her life before the War...

2. A Weird Day in July

WHY IS IT THAT WEIRD THINGS ALWAYS HAPPEN IN JULY? Me appearing, me disappearing and the war starting. As you know in my last book I included what Pharious was thinking at the time. I’m not sure how much of it was my own. It was as if, when I was writing, someone was taking over and writing parts for me but this one is truly my own as I must relive my life, when I did not know my destiny but even so guard it well for if this falls into the wrong hands then disaster will strike.

Anyway, as I was saying, strange things always seem to happen in July. It was on the morning of July 7th and everyone was going about their daily business. The adults rushing around, the children going to classes, the ones too young for school messing around. Then all of a sudden there was a bright light and in a burst of flames came a cradle holding me. In my hand was a letter addressed to my Master.

It said “This is my champion, the Protector of the Stars. Teach her well and when the time is right she will defeat your enemy. However much she begs, do not teach her the full extent of her powers until Starre is in grave peril. Signed Camilla.”

Of course, as soon as my master saw that it was from Camilla, he dropped the letter but then picked up again.

“Treat this child with respect for she is a gift from Camilla.”

There was a collective gasp around the courtyard but my master just picked me up and took me over to Delilah, Danny’s mum.

“Delilah, look after Kara like she is your daughter. Raise her with Danny.” my master whispered.

Delilah did nothing more than nod and hurry out of the courtyard. The people of Starre went back to the normal hustle and bustle of the town centre and almost completely forgot the strange child and the strange message from Camilla. Almost. Lots of people wanted to know what I was and why I had been sent here. I spent my first few months crowded by people wanting to see me, to see Camilla’s champion. Eventually, they realised I was nothing special to look at and I grew up like a normal child.  I had a family, of sorts, who loved me, a teacher who cared for me and a companion throughout the years. Danny’s father had disappeared after Delilah became pregnant with Danny and on the night she was born, his star flickered and died…

On my fourth birthday I disappeared. I was found hours later in a desolate area of Starre, the opposite side of the planet to where we lived. But what was I doing there and why was there a dagger gleaming in my hand?

I knew nothing of my future but when a Hunter appeared on the planet, I realised that something was wrong. Even though I didn’t know about Pharious yet, I sensed that the Hunter was connected to my darkest nightmare, my archenemy. I also sensed that they had something of mine. So I set of to find them. I raced across the planet as fast as the wind (literally) to stop him from finding anything about our planet, for he was a spy. When I found him we battled for hours, me letting my senses take over, him using all he knew. I noticed he was guarding his right side more than his left and spotted a gleaming silver dagger sparkling like diamonds at his hip.

I feinted to the left; leaving his right side unprotected and grabbed the dagger. As it touched my hand it turned warm and glowed bright silver, radiating beauty. The hunter fled and I raced after him, my eyes gleaming silver with determination to kill the one who tried to stop me from having what was rightfully mine. I stabbed him in the back and he fell to the ground, dead. Then I fainted. I was too young and the power had overwhelmed me. The ability to kill, even for good, is too great a responsibility for a young child.

When my Master found me, he feared I was dead. I did not know him yet and as soon as he felt me stirring he breathed a sigh of relief, and then got out of there as quickly as he could. As I came round, I saw the doctor, the hairdresser, the butcher, Danny and her mum all leaning over me with anxiety.

The doctor checked me over and confirmed that I was alright but should probably spend the rest of the day resting. I was confused as to what had happened and everyone wanted to know. I didn’t know what to tell them and ended up screaming at them to go away. Even when they did, they had awaken the memories inside my head and it just went round and round, torturing me with the responsibility, frightening me with the images, living the moment again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again…
