5. Monster

Age 8:

"I don't understand. Why do I have to live with this? I don't want to be a wolf." Ethan was eight years old when he was told by his father the secret that changed his life forever. "It's a part of our family blood line Ethan. We can't change the past."

His father was the leader of a large pack. There were fifteen of them, sixteen including Ethan. He was youngest in the pack. Ethan crossed his arms over his chest and sulked on his bed. Ethan didn't want to deal with being a wolf.

Age 16:

"You're such a slow poke!" Laila laughed. Laila was Ethan's childhood best friend before they moved away from each other. "I am not!" Ethan laughed, chasing after her. Laila always challenged Ethan, pushing him to new heights.

Ethan, now sixteen, had learned to deal with his secret of being a wolf but he was having trouble keeping the secret from getting out. He went to high school to be a normal kid, but being a wolf made him far from being normal.

Laila quickly turned into a wolf and began running even faster. Ethan knew she was cheating, but he didn't care. With her, everything had no boundaries. There were no rules and they could have fun all they want.

Ethan also changed into a wolf as well, now running at her speed. Being slightly larger gave him an advantage to catch her. He pinned her onto the ground and grinned, wagging his tail happily. Laila gently nipped at his ear, pushing him off of her.

There were benefits to being wolf - increased speed, incredible sense of smell, and being stronger than humans. Both friends transformed back to their human form, fully clothed. "You won this round wolf." Laila smirked. "Race you home." With that, she took off and Ethan ran after her.

For some odd reason, Allie didn't move from her spot. She didn't turn away from Ethan, nor did she try to run. Instead, she was processing the three words that he told her. I'm a wolf. Those were the only words that were going through her mind. "Allie?" Ethan asked.

She snapped back to reality and looked at him. "Give me a second." she said, walking over to one of the chairs and sat down. Ethan nodded, then waited a few minutes before walking over and sitting down in one of the chairs. "Have you always been..."

She was afraid to say the word 'wolf.' She watched him as he nodded, then look down. "Why didn't you tell me sooner?" she asked.

"I was afraid of how you'd react." he answered, looking at her.

"Why me?"

"I saw that you were different from all of the other girls at school. You remind me of my best friend." he said. "My only best friend."

"Was she... like you?"

He nodded in reply. "I've known her for sixteen years and I never saw her again. My dad told me that she was a bad influence and a disgrace to what we are. She broke rules and disobeyed the leaders. I never understood what the rules were at the time until..."

He looked away and Allie reached over, placing her hand on his. "We don't have to talk about it now. We can talk about it after the party, or tomorrow at my house." she said. The music began playing and people were already arriving at the house.

"Let's go inside." She stood up, holding her hand out towards him. He took her hand as she helped him stand up. She led him into the house where the house was almost full with people in costumes.

After the party, Allie and Ethan stayed to clean up the mess everyone had left. "Thanks for sticking around guys." Charlotte smiled. Once all of the decorations were taken down, Allie and Ethan walked back to his car.

Ethan parked his car in front of Allie's house, but Allie continued to stay there. She didn't want to move from her spot. "I had a great time tonight." she smiled. She didn't want to start up a conversation about the news she had just heard from Ethan. Maybe on his own time. She thought to herself.

"I did too. Thanks for inviting me." he smiled.

"Good night Ethan." She leaned over and kissed him on the cheek before getting out of the car, then closed the door behind her. She walked up to the front steps of her house, but as soon as she placed her key into the lock, Ethan had come up behind her and turned her while planting his lips on hers.

Allie wrapped her arms around his neck as he pulled her close to him. They pulled away for a few moments to take a breath. "I've been waiting to kiss you all night." he said quietly.

"Why don't you come in?" she asked. "We can talk if you want."

"I'd like that." he smiled, then entered the house with her as she closed the door behind them. Allie was more worried about what her friends might say about Ethan. She didn't want to let that thought bother her, but the more she and Ethan talked, the more she worried.

She worried that her friends weren't going to see Ethan the same, nor were they going to accept him for who he is. They would only see him for what he is: a monster.
