The Maiden in the Mist - Book two in the Sherwood Series (unedited)

Long ago, deep in the heart of Sherwood Forest there lived an unknown legend who was hidden in her father’s shadow. Forgotten by all but a few. But now her life shall be revealed to you; as long as you can keep it a secret.
Six months have passed since that day when Guinevere learnt the truth of her heritage. She has lived a fairly quiet life, plundering caravans and nursing the sick and injured; but she has enjoyed it, at last she has a family.
However, this is soon about to change. Her uncle, King Richard, has summoned her and her father to the Holy Lands in order to help with a dangerous situation. But is that all that will happen?

1. Prologue

Almost four months have passed since that horrid day; the anniversary of my birth. It is terrifying to think that on that day that is supposed to be a celebration of my life that I almost died; that so many people actually did die.

I am walking with Will now. Our feet crunching on the freshly fallen snow, it is freezing. My first winter living in the outlaw camp and I can express this openly; it is horrible. I  wake up in a freezing tent and we have to be careful with what sort of wood we use as we could attract the attention of some unwanted guests. To make matter worse, I am stuck wearing a dress that is much too short for me and no good in weather such as this.

As I walk, I listen to the sound of my feet as they stomp of the ground and crunch the snow.

“I cannot believe that you are making me do this!” I snap to Will, watching as my breath is sprayed in front of me in a foggy cloud.

Will softly chuckled under his breath and said to me, “Well you volunteered.”

“No, no I did not. You forced me to do this. All of you. Much, Alan, Tuck, John, Father. It is unfair! Just because I am a girl does not mean that I have to be pushed into a freezing cold river in the middle of winter!” I wined.

“Well, you will  have to take that up with Robin!”

“I will actually!”

“Oh really?” Will said raising an eye brow.

“Yes. I will tell him that next time he wants so one to wear a dress and fling themselves in a freezing cold river then you can; since you seem so keen!”

Will chuckle became louder and he practically fell forwards from the sheer force of it.

I stormed forward, moving away from Will Scarlet and his tormenting ways.

“Gwen, wait up. I didn’t mean it; I swear!”

I dropped to the floor and made it look like I was about to burst into tears.

“Gwen, are you okay?”

Quietly, I grabbed some of the cold snow in my hands and cupped it into a ball.

I turned around and threw the snow hard at his face. He stumbled backwards, shocked. Then he charged at me and wrapped his arms around my waist. Without warning, he threw into a pile of snow. I squealed and began to beat him away.

We continued like this for ages, acting like complete idiots as we threw snow at each other. Then we stopped, silence by the whistle that erupted the silent air.

“It is time!” Will said.

“I hate you!” I replied through gritted teeth.

“I know!”

Then, I turned and ran!
