30. Another Bump In The Road...

Katie's P.O.V

I grumbled to myself as I lazily opened my tired eyes.

"Niall?" I questioned when I didn't see my brother next to me.

"He went to go get you some breakfast." A low, raspy voice spoke.

I sat up and grinned as I found myself looking into a pair of emerald eyes.

"Yum, hospital food." I said sarcastically. "There isn't anyway I could convince you to bring me some fast food is there?"

"Afraid not." He smirked. "I on the other hand was thinking about some McDonald's."

"You're despicable." I complained.

"I'll eat it right in front of you too." He instigated.

"Harry, share!" I whined as he dug his car keys out of his pocket.

"Not likely." He chuckled, waving his hand as he walked out the door.

I sighed out in annoyance as Niall walked back in with a tray.

"What's the matter?" He questioned, pulling a rolling stand over to my bed before setting the tray in front of me.

"My boyfriend is evil." I said nonchalantly.

"Really? He offered to bring me something from McDonald's when I passed him in the hall." He said, pointing back towards the door.

"Ugh!" I squealed.

"What?" He chuckled, amused with my frustration.

"Why do I have to eat hospital food? It's not like there's any harm in eating what you guys are getting." I complained yet again.

"How do you even know if you like it or not? You haven't even tried it." Niall protested, scooping up what looked like yogurt before moving it towards my mouth.

"Niall, I'm fifteen. I don't need you to feed me." I said, moving my face away from him.

"Just open up. It'll be like old times." He chuckled.

"No!" The spoon was shoved into my mouth as quickly as I spoke. "You're so controlling." I grumbled, snatching the not so bad yogurt from his possession, along with the spoon.

"Mhm, whatever." He chuckled.

"Did they have apple juice?" I asked, getting to more pressing matters.

"Yes." He laughed. He rolled his eyes as he handed me a Styrofoam cup containing my preferred beverage.

"Thank you." I said as sweetly as possible, causing him to laugh.

"Niall, heads up." Harry spoke as he walked through the door.

Niall turned around, catching a bag Harry had tossed in his direction.

"Thanks mate." He replied, digging into the sack.

"Anything for me in that bag, Harold?" I pried.

"Don't bet on it." He laughed.

I laid back down and pouted once more. They were seriously going to consume their food in front of me after what I had just eaten.

Please say someone screwed up their order or something!

The guys didn't seem to notice my presence as they continued eating. I then swung my legs over the side of the bed and attempted to stand.

"Whoa." I whispered.

My legs were totally numb from me laying there for however long it had been.

"Hey, what are you doing?!" Niall scowled, jumping out of his seat and rushing over to me.

"Niall, I seriously need to go." I explained.

"You're not going anywhere. Now lay back down."

I face palmed myself before speaking again. "No, I mean I need to go. Like, I haven't peed since who knows when."

I heard Harry snicker in the background before coughing a bit, most likely choking on his food.

How's it taste now, traitor?!

"Oh, um, you-"

"Niall, can you just help me walk over there?" I asked, pointing to a door on the other side of the room. "My legs are super numb and it's kind of freaking me out."

"Sure." He said, still looking a bit odd.

We slowly made our way over to the door, my legs feeling quite tingly and weird as they were trying to get back to normal.

"Um, do you need help with-"

"No!" I shouted at him for the second time this morning.

I stiffly walked into the bathroom and shut the door. My cheeks felt a bit warm as I realized how embarrassing that was. I then decided to focus on the fact that I was actually out of that stupid bed.

Yay me!

Niall's P.O.V

"Smooth." Harry chuckled as I walked back over to my seat.

"What can I say?" I laughed, joking along.

"So, what did you do to Katie this morning? She seemed upset with you?" I interrogated.

My question was easily answered as Harry held up his McDonald's bag.

"Hospital food verses this." He chuckled, standing up and throwing his trash away, along with mine. "She wanted me to bring her something, but I told her no."

"That's why she was moody when I walked in." I laughed.

Harry and I continued joking about my sister's attitude when I was unexpectedly called for by her doctor.

"Mr. Horan? May I speak to you in the hall?"

"Sure." I replied before turning to Harry. "If I'm not back and Katie needs help-"

"I've got it." He assured me as I walked out.

"Is everything ok?" I asked, hoping there weren't going to be any complications with Katie.

"Yes, she's doing very well." He assured me. "It's just." He stopped, not sure how to explain what he wanted to say.

"What is it?" I pried.

"We think maybe it would be best if she saw a therapist, you know, to have someone to talk to once or twice a week."

"Is it mandatory?" I asked, knowing Katie would protest against this.

"Well, no." He said, uncomfortably shifting on his feet. "But the sessions could be quite beneficial. We think you should discuss the issue with her. She may listen better to someone like you, being her brother and all."

"Alright." I nodded, shaking the doctor's hand before we parted ways.

"Oh! I almost forgot!" He shouted, rushing back over to me. "Here are some papers you might like to have. They're just suggestions and information that would be good for you to look over."

"Thanks." I said, walking back into the room.

"You see, you're stronger already!" Harry exclaimed as he walked alongside Katie. His eyes never once left her, watching her and making sure she wouldn't stumble. She made it to the bed on her own two feet, smiling at Harry as he gently hugged her.

"Good job." I spoke, smiling at her.

"What's that?" She asked, pointing to the papers in my hand.

"Oh, nothing. Just some papers from the doctor." I said, making my way over to her bed. "Harry, would you mind if Katie and I talked alone for a moment?"

"Sure. I need to see if the others are here yet." He said, walking out.

"Is it bad?" She asked, once Harry was gone.

"What?" I asked, now sitting next to her.

"I'm not stupid, Niall. What did the doctor say, and what are the papers for?"

I sighed out as I took her hand in mine. "Look, we only want what's best for you. The doctor suggested that you talk to a therapist from time to-"

"What?! You think I need a shrink?! I knew it, you all think I'm crazy!" She yelled, ripping her hand away from mine.

"No, that's not it at all. We just think it would help you feel better if you had someone to talk to. No one thinks you're crazy." I said, pushing some hair out of her face. "Please don't cry." I sighed out as I saw her teary eyes.

"What, am I supposed to say thank you and smile at the fact you want someone to get inside my head?" She questioned. "If you make me do this, I can promise you that things will get worse. How am I supposed to feel happy, no, normal if I have to talk about my problems to some stranger?"

"It's not required." I explained, exhaling deeply. "I just wanted to help."

"I know, but all I need is to be back home. I'll be fine."

"Will you at least give it a try? For me?" I asked.

"I'm sorry, Niall." She said. "I can't do this."

"Look, I know you don't like it when I actually play the role of an adult, but whether you like it or not I'm your legal guardian. I'll see how you act for the first couple of weeks home. I'll then decide whether you should see someone or not, ok?"

"Whatever." She huffed, rolling on her side so she didn't have to look at me.

"Katie, it's just another bump in the road. We can get over it."

"Says the guy who doesn't have someone slamming him about seeing a shrink."

"Therapist." I corrected.

"Same difference." She retaliated.

"We'll talk about this again later." I said, hearing loud voices coming down the hall. I knew it was the lads.

"Sure. You'll talk, and I'll just sit here and do nothing but listen because arguing with you is pointless. I look forward to talking about it again, Niall, I really do." She spoke.

"We come bearing gifts!" Harry shouted as all four boys walked through the door.

"I don't need gifts, guys. I just need to get out of here." Katie laughed, sitting up as Harry walked over to her, followed by the rest of the boys.

I thought to myself as I watched her. She had just been upset about our conversation but was now suddenly smiling with Harry. If he could make her this happy by just standing there, maybe he could help with her depressive state.

"Hey, watch it!" I said as Harry leaned down and kissed her.

"And it begins." Katie announced. "The overly protective big brother is about to go off guys." She giggled.

"Don't you start with me." I grinned, pointing my finger at her.

"Yes sir!" She said, saluting me.

We all began to laugh at her random action, making me realize this is how things were meant to be. We were finally all together.
