6. Untamed

Chapter 6

t was 7:15 am when he finally approached the building with keys in hand. He was talking on his cell, not paying attention.

Hey, I say.

Uh hey, he says hanging up the phone.

I’m here bright and early just like you wanted, I say.

Lemme help you with that, I say taking the box from his hand as he tried to unlock the door.

I followed him inside as he opened it. He motioned for me to take the box into the office. I watched as he attached sheets of paper and forms to his clipboard.

What? He asks.

I like looking at you, I say.

I like looking at you too, he says hesitantly, now looking up.

I like that you like looking at me, I say.

You like the attention you get from the opposite sex don’t you?

It’s not a preference; it’s just a reality I have to accept.

You feed off it, I can see it.

Don’t psychoanalyze me.

I’m not, just saying what I see.

Is that all you see?

No, I see a kid, trying to grow up too fast. Your childhood is a precious thing and once it’s gone you can’t get it back. Enjoy it, because being an adult isn't all it’s cracked up to be. You got bills and mortgages, and problems. And not like teenage problems I mean real problems. Besides you got your whole life to be an adult, just be a kid while you still can.

I thought about that, and how I couldn't stop the things that were happening to me, that were changing me.

I stopped being a child over three years ago, I say. You’re right about one thing, there is no going back.

The sound of a van outside interrupted us.

Those guys are here to get rid of all that old stuff I’m gonna go talk to ‘em, he says walking out.

I hopped up on the desk, sat and waited. I saw when he came in with two other men. He directed them upstairs and then out back. I was tugging at the hem of my skirt when he came back in. He looked at me legs, crossed as I sat perched on the desk.

What took you so long? I ask.

I got a schedule to keep I don’t have extra time just lying around for idle chit chat, he replies.

We can do more than talk, I say.

What are you suggesting? He asks finally looking away from that clipboard.

What do you wanna do to me? I ask.

I could almost hear his breathing get heavier. He swallowed as he began slowly walking towards me.

I wish you were old enough so I could tell you, he says. You should get into uniform.

Wanna come help me?

Aw kid, what are you trying to do to me?

Nothing, I say giggling.

He was standing so close to me I could feel his breath. He looked at my thighs, probably trying to imagine what it would feel like to be between them.

It’s okay, I say knowing he wanted to touch me.

He put his hand on my knee, started moving up slowly.

Terrence is here, I say looking up.

He backed away immediately, just as he opened the door.

You never heard of knocking Winters? He asks.

He put his palms up and backed away. There were two other lawbreakers now walking in.

You should get out of here, he says to me.

I hopped off the desk and went to go get changed. I went back outside with my suit zipped down showing off my black sports bra. He gave me a glance of appreciation and I smiled at him. I loitered around as the others started coming in, Cameron walked up to me and gave me his usual head to toe stare.

Coming here and seeing you, almost makes it worth it, he says.

We laugh; he leaves to go get changed. Chambers came walking over.

We got a lot of pickups and drop offs today, this is a list of who takes what; you think you can handle that? He asks handing me a clipboard.

Yeah, I reply.

Good, he says looking at my breasts. Why don’t you take Alister with you?

Lynch, you’re with Brooks today, he says before walking away.

Alister Lynch was a scrawny white boy who got busted for peddling marijuana, first offence. I made it clear to him that we didn't need to do the small talk thing as we walked around and checked the rooms.

Loving that strut baby, Cameron hollers as we pass him by.

See you got stuck on paint duty today, I say stopping.

Yeah, you missed out last night, he says walking up to me.

You actually remember what happened?

Get lost Alister, he says on reaching us. Chicks shaking their bare titties in your face is kinda hard to forget.

Then I’m glad I stayed home.

I was serious about what I said.

And what’s that?

I want you, I wanna be with you.

Cameron, I say with a laugh. We’ve known each other for less than a week.

I know what I want.

Your decision is based on a blow job.

The best one I ever had.

Can we not talk about this?

What do you have to lose?

Cameron I like you, but...not like that. Besides, I’m not ready to be in a relationship with anyone.

Yeah, I gotta go I don’t need Chambers on my back, I say walking away. Alister! Come on.

By the time I got back out front another van had arrived, looked like a drop off.

Brooks, I need you over here for a sec, Chambers calls. Lynch help them offload. Can you show them where to put this stuff? He asks me.

Yeah, but there’s still a few pieces of furniture in there it’s not all gonna fit, and paint is still drying on the outer wall.

Alright, Winters, Costas go with Brooks, clear out the bar area and put everything in the other room and put a fence up in front of the outer wall. Lynch you can stop for now.

I lead the boys back inside and sat on the bar and watched them hall the stuff out.

So you think they’re gonna take the bar out? Riez asks.

If they were it would have been out by now, they’re probably gonna use it as a juice bar, I say.

Think they've got any alcohol stashed away back there? He asks.

I don’t know, I say jumping off the bar top and walking behind it. Looks all cleaned out, I say lifting up two empty bottles of vodka.

Check the cupboards Terrence says.

I came back up with one bottle of bourbon and a half bottle of scotch.

That’s what I’m talking about, Riez says smiling.

That’s weak, Terrence says walking over and taking the bourbon.

Excuse you? I say as he snatches it from my hand.

What? Your momma never taught you how to act in the presence of a man?

Terrence was just a few shades short of midnight with cornrows sticking every which way out the side of his head. His entire top row of teeth was plated with gold and at 22 he was the second oldest law breaking delinquent here. He was also the closest thing to a bully who up until now I had no problems with.

What? He taunted before guzzling down the liquid.

This boy was tripping, if he thought because he was older than me and a “man” he was gonna dis me he was wrong. I slapped the bottle out of his hand mid gulp. The liquor spilled all over the front of him and splattered on Riez as the bottle broke on the floor.

Watch it man, he says.

Terrence turned around and looked at me incredulously.

What? Your momma ain’t teach you no manners? I asked.

Just then Chambers walked in the room.

What the hell happened here? He asked looking at the broken bottle.

I was relieved to see him, knowing he just saved me from a beat down.

Well? I asked a question! He bellowed.

Terrence and Riez are the ones spattered in alcohol ask them, I say walking out.

A half hour later I was telling Cameron what had happened when Terrence came stumping around the corner.

Yo you better tell that little ho to watch her back! He says to Cameron.

Ho? Boy you better watch your mouth, Cameron returns leaning off the wall.

What you wanna do? Terrence asks walking up to him.

Don’t make me bust you in your face again man, Cameron says walking up to him.

Cameron don’t, I say pulling him back. Don’t mess up your community service over this punk.

Punk? Bitch please you ain't nothing but a two dollar piece ah ass! Terrence shouts.

Yo fall back player, Cameron says stepping between us.

Oh so you wanna fight for this ho that Chambers is already banging?

Just swing once partner, Cameron says.

Cameron come on! I say pulling him back and walking in the other direction.

That’s right bitch you better run! Terrence shouts.

Cameron pulls away from me and runs into him with a punch. Terrence throws it back and then they were on the floor.

Guys stop it! I yell as they roll around on the ground.

Terrence got on top of Cameron and started punching him. I grab onto his collar and try to pull him off. I lose my grip as Cameron rolls him over and started punching him in the face. I grab onto his arm trying to stop him, in that moment Terrence got the upper hand and punched him. He toppled over and we both end up on the ground. The two hurry to their feet and start swinging at each other again. Terrence rams him into a wall and they both start choking each other while screaming obscenities.

I saw orange jumpsuits running towards us with Chambers in tow.

Thank God! I say as he reaches us.

Hey! Break it up you two! Brooks why are you always at the centre of everything? He says zipping my suit up. Your dad’s here.

What? I say as he returns his attention to them.
