Kacia was bullied in high school. Now in her junior year, Kacia meets someone who will change her life forever.

2. The Encounter

Kacia POV

When I got home, my parents were both at work. They worked all the time, but I was grateful. I headed straight up to my room and slipped off my shoes and lay on my bed. My wrists came into view. Two thin cuts were marked on my right wrist, my left with only one. Many scars were left underneath it. Yes, I cut. But I’m not an all-black emo girl.  I was regular, just me. My phone dinged once more.

Meet me at the park at 7

It was from Niall. He probably had to ask me the question he was trying to ask me at lunch. I slipped on my black vans once again, and headed downstairs. Grabbing a pringles can, I stepped outside. I crossed my backyard to lie on the hammock. Unlocking my phone, I thought of the new boy for the hundredth time that day.  Still, I didn’t know his name. I only had that one class with him, and I would have to find out one way or another.

Six-thirty came quickly, and I headed out to my car. I arrived five minutes before seven, looking around for the familiar blonde haired boy I knew so well. Niall seemed to have spotted me first because he snuck up on me and hugged me from behind. I smiled and turned around.

“Hi Niall,” I said, knowing exactly who it was. I recognized the smell of his cologne. Niall took my hand and led me to a bench under a shady tree. The park was pretty much empty, and the street lights were on already. The lawn had been freshly cut and the smell of grilling was in the air. We were about two weeks into school, therefore it was still summer. Not like the season stopped people here in our small little town. Niall moved here in seventh grade from Ireland, and we’ve been friends ever sense. He always said he’d take me there someday.

“Hey,” Niall said sweetly. I smiled and wondered what his question was for about the one hundredth time that day. “How’s it going?”

“Fine, I guess. I’m just really cold,” I replied. I looked up towards the sky where the moon was shining with the stars. My arms had goose bumps and my teeth were chattering. I obviously got cold really easily, since it was summer and about fifty-degrees. Our little town didn’t get warm much; it was usually rare when it did.

“Cold? It’s still summer, Kacia,” Niall laughed. I shrugged and fought back a smile. Niall removed his hoodie and handed it over to me. “Here.”

“Oh no, you don’t have to. You’ll be cold. Just keep it.” I insisted. Niall didn’t listen to me and put the green hoodie over my shoulders. I slipped my arms through, giving up.

“I’ll live,” Niall smiled. I laughed and brought the jacket closer to me, not wanting to zip it. The hoodie smelled like Niall. It was soft and warm, and really big on me. He was only two inches taller than me, but it was really long. It came down to my mid-thigh. “So, can I ask you that question now?” Niall asked me. I nodded. This is the moment I’ve been waiting for.

“Um, well. Will you go” I heard the leaves rustle and I jumped up. I scanned the park. “What’s wrong?” Niall asked as he sighed. He kept getting interrupted and that put a heavy amount of guilt on me.

“You heard that noise, right?” Niall shook his head. I continued looking around when I saw him. The new boy was standing under a street light about fifty yards away, watching me. We made eye contact and he smirked. “I’ll be right back,” I told Niall as I started across the grass.

I could hear Niall stand up. “Where are you going?” He asked, sounding really disappointed. I didn’t answer, I just kept going. The new boy stood there waiting for me. As I came closer and closer to my destination, I got more nervous. What was I going to say? I really didn’t think this through. When I reached him, I looked down at my feet.

“Hi,” his raspy voice spoke. I looked up and our eyes connected. “Nice jacket.” I looked down at my jacket and blushed a little. Did he think I had a boyfriend?

“Um, thanks. Why are you here?” I asked him. He raised his eyebrows. “Why are you?”  I rolled my eyes. He chuckled.

“Why does that matter to you?” I asked him raising my eyebrows like he did. “Why does my reason of being here matter to you?” The boy asked. I clenched my fists, he was annoying me. “Because you were staring at me, now you answer,” I told him through clenched teeth.

He smirked. “It doesn’t matter to me, and I came here to get away from my dad. Happy?” he said. His answer made me feel bad for asking. “Ecstatic. I’m here with my friend,” His face told me he already knew.

“I can see that,” He replied to me. Part of me wanted to turn around and go back to Niall, but the other part wanted to stay and learn more about this stranger. “Then why did you ask?”

He rolled his eyes and laughed a little. I took a step backwards. He took a step forwards. “Because I wanted to be difficult. Where are you going?” I turned my head back to Niall. Niall waved and smiled at me, but I could see he was anxious for me to come back so he could ask me the question he’s been waiting to ask.

“I should probably get back to my friend. I’ll see you around,” I said walking away, leaving the boy to stand there alone. The damp grass squished under my feet, and my hands were cold. Once I reached Niall he took my hand and pulled me across the grass in the direction towards my car.

“I think you should get home,” Niall told me opening the door for me. I looked up at him before seating myself in the car. He walked towards his own car leaving me in my car with the door wide open.

“Wait Niall! Your jacket!” I called out Niall. He turned around and started walking backwards. “Keep it.” With that, he was gone, leaving me speechless.

When I got home, I hurried upstairs and changed into nice warm pajamas, keeping Niall’s Jacket wrapped around me. I grabbed my diary off the windowsill next to my bed, and quickly wrote:

               September 24th, 2013

Dear Diary, I think I like Niall

I put it back in its place and turned off my lamp. Wrapping the covers around me, I smiled to myself. I like Niall Horan.

Niall’s POV

I waited for Kacia at the park, arriving early because I was very anxious to ask her my question. Earlier when I tried I got interrupted by Caitlin. I heard a car pull up and I hurried to the street. I snuck up on Kacia, who was searching for me, and hugged her from behind.

“Hi Niall,” She said, probably recognizing me from some silly thing like she does. I took her hand and led her to a bench under a shady tree. It was pretty much empty at the park, and despite it still sort of being summer, it was chilly. The streetlights were already on and the moon and stars were out, shining bright and beautifully.

“Hey,” I said kindly, Kacia smiling up at me. I was only about two inches taller than her, but that made all the difference. “How’s it going?”

“Fine, I guess. I’m just really cold,” She replied. Kacia looked up at the sky. I heard her teeth chattering and her arms were covered in goose bumps. Kacia didn’t wear shirts without long sleeves often, well, not since we were fourteen, two years ago. I was already seventeen, I had an early birthday but Kacia was still sixteen, turning my age in December.

“Cold? It’s still summer, Kacia,” I laughed. She shrugged and fought back a smile. I then removed my hoodie and handed it over to her. “Here.”

“Oh no, you don’t have to. You’ll be cold. Just keep it.” Kacia said. I didn’t listen to her and put the green hoodie over her shoulders anyway. Kacia slipped her arms through the sleeves, giving into its warmth.

“I’ll live,” I smiled sweetly down at her. Kacia laughed and brought the jacket closer to her. The hoodie looked good on her, despite the fact it came down to the middle of her thighs, but that made it cute. That way when she wore it to school tomorrow, everyone would know she was mine. If she said yes to my question. I really hope she will. “So, can I ask you that question now?” I asked her. Kacia nodded. This is the moment I’ve been waiting for.

“Um, well. Will you go” I started but I got interrupted once again. Kacia jumped up suddenly and looked around the park. “What’s wrong?” I asked with a sigh. I kept getting interrupted and I was wondering if I would ever get to ask her my question.

“You heard that noise, right?” Kacia asked me. I shook my head. She continued looking around when her eyes stopped on one person. Then I saw him. It was new kid standing under the streetlight a good distance away from where we were. He was looking towards us. I could see him smirk. “I’ll be right back,” She told me as she started across the grass.

I stood up. “Where are you going?” I asked disappointedly. She didn’t answer me, she just kept going. I sunk back into the bench and watched her as she approached the boy. How did she know him? To be honest, I was kind of jealous. I was about to ask her a really big question and she got up and left me. I was feeling kind of hurt.

Their conversation lasted a good five minutes while I sat there fighting the urge to leave, but if I did, would she ever feel the same way about me. I watched as Kacia took a step back and he stepped towards her and said something. I was scared. I don’t know why, it’s not like he was going to hurt her. This boy was scaring me with his actions. Then she turned around and headed across the damp grass towards the bench. Once she reached me I grabbed her hand and led her to her car. I didn't have the nerve to ask her my question now, after she basically left me for another boy. What was the purpose of that anyway?

“I think you should get home,” I told her opening the door so she could get in. She looked up at me before getting in her car. I was walking towards my own car when I heard her voice.

“Wait Niall! Your jacket!” She called towards me. I started walking backwards and I saw her getting ready to give it back. “Keep it,” I told her, even if we weren’t dating yet, maybe it will be a head start. I turned back around and headed to my car. Getting in, I turned on my car and turned the radio off, wanting to think. Did she feel the same way about me?
