23. Broken

I heard Alex and Zac moving around downstairs and light pouring in through the tiny cracks in my "room". I sat up and looked through the little space between the wall and the roof and saw them just sitting there. I could tell that it was early morning. My stomach growled and I placed my hand over it and sat down in the farthest corner away from the trapdoor. I heard the stairs start to squeak and I knew that one of the guys was coming up the stairs. I laid my head against the wall and stared at the trapdoor as it opened and Zac poked his head in.

"Breakfast is ready, get up," he ordered me. I just turned my head away from him. "Did you hear me?" he barked. "I said get up!"

"No, I heard you. It's just a matter of whether or not I want to do what you say," I said as I looked at him.

Even in the dim light I could see Zac's face turn red with anger. I stuck my tough out at him and I could tell I had gone a bit too far. Zac reached into my tiny room and pulled on the blanket I was sitting on. I went flying forward through the trapdoor and down the ladder. I hit my head and landed awkwardly on my arm. I tried to roll over but my ribs were hurting. Great. I could tell I had a broken arm and a few broken ribs. Zac jumped off the ladder and Alex came running up the steps. He was yelling at Zac but everything seemed muffled. I felt something warm and sticky run down my face and I tasted blood. They helped me up, and I felt myself scream. I couldn't put any weight on my leg either. Double great.

Alex picked me up and carried me down stairs and set me on one of the window seats. He ordered Zac to get a wet cloth to wipe up the blood and Zac stormed away like he was the bad guy. Oh wait. He is the bad guy! Zac came walking back with a wet washcloth from the bathroom and Alex tried to wipe off the blood from my face but I pushed him away with my good arm.

"Well at least she wont be going anywhere," Alex said as he walked away. Zac smiled as he walked away into the kitchen.
